Title: Back up stuff?
Post by: Tina on Nov 12, 2007, 09:17:33 PM
I am a computer newbie. I've been online less than 3 years. I missed this room altogether and tonight I have some serious downloading to do.
Now I have all of these wonderful blank CD disc things. Jonni has used a few to put some music on. But I'm afraid I don't know how to use them. I want to put some of the files that I have on my 'puter on them to save them in case my computer crashes on me.
Can I get a step-by-step how-to? Can someone link me to a place that isn't awfully difficult? I am not a technophile. I need lay language. I bet there is a tutorial right on my Dell XP that I haven't found yet.

Here is a link (http://free-backup.info/how-to-easily-backup-personal-files-on-microsoft-windows-xp.html)  that appears to be pretty basic.  I will write something up for you if this doesn't do it.  CDs are great for storing backups.

Thank you, Jim. That is what I needed. Now I have a question that it didn't answer for me. It says it is best to close any running programs. I've had other things tell me to close all running programs before installing something. I can close  all of my windows but there are programs running  all the time that I don't know how to close. When iIuse adaware for instance, it tells me I have 43 programs running. I have no idea what they are. Or how to turn them off. And do I want to turn them off? Will I need to go around turning stuff  that I need back on afterwards?
See, I need help.

That means shut down all the programs you started up.  What it really means is to close all open windows.

The programs that Ad-aware reports are small programs that windows needs to run.  You don't need to shut those down. When you hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete you can bring up windows task manager and see all kinds of programs that are running.  Again these are not something you need to shut down.  If there is a program running there that needs to be shut down, the windows installer will do it.  Then it will tell you to restart your computer.  That restart, actually restarts any programs that the installer shut down.

Thank you very much. It is the small stuff that gets to me. Not enough to make a panic call to an expert but enough that you wish you had an expert living next door.
