Indoor Bamboo

Could I get a couple of tubs of bamboo say about 8 to 10 feet tall to use as a background for my grotto area?
Or do they require to much dirt?
I'm thinking I could use their straight stems as a good blind for the extension cords that would be running from the wall socket to the lights that would be needed for all the plants
Or maybe I could do a shorter bunch that would manage in long planters that I could put on a hidden shelf.

I think you can make this idea work, if you are willing to commit some time to it. First, if you find a shade-tolerant clumping bamboo, it should do okay indoors.
Then, if you make time every year or two to divide it, it should do just fine in pots. I have been working with the same clump on my patio of at least three years. First year, I put it in a bigger pot. This year, I used a chain saw to cut the clump in half, and now I have two pots going.

thanks for the input Barleychown. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'll definitely look for that type and see what is available.

Now you have me thinking.
Mike hates the palms I put around my huge tank every winter...I wonder if bamboo would like to live there?
Guess we will have to try bamboo in the house together!

Sounds cool. Let me know what kind you find. I'm thinking the lucky bamboo is used in houses but I'm not sure if it is clumping or how tall it gets.

I have been wondering the same thing Bonnie. Wouldn't that just be the coolest room divider?

It sure would, wonder how deep a pot you would have to put them in and would they need to be in the sunlight?

From what I remember from reading, and what I've seen with my own, bamboo can root from each "joint" on it's stem. My bamboo was in a 32" pot last year, and used up every bit of it. After dividing it with a chainsaw, this year it's in 24" pots, and it dries out a bit quick for my taste.
However, with it being inside, I bet that wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Here is an excellent article on the different types and care requirements of types of bamboo that will do well indoors.
Growing Bamboo Indoors
I like the first two in the medium height varieties.

Great article that's a fantastic start for the grotto. And it all starts with the research.
