I think it would be easier to handle if you did the photos first.  Then sewing the squares together.  Is the back going to be all one piece then?  And are you going to do additional quilting to hold it all together if you do use batting?

Ok I have been sewing all day long trying to get this costume done for Michael.   I dunno if you all know or not but Michael is a fanatic of The Wiggles and this year he wanted to be the character from their show Henry the Octopus... This is what Henry looks like...

And Michael as Henry, minus that hat, it is not done yet.

His arms are all purple though he looks very blue in the picture.

:Wow: great job Triss Sorry about your finger hope it heals quick!!

I want to use that fabric as a full backing.. I thought it was so pretty and this quilt is for our favorite cousin that just had a baby after trying for many years and just got married last year as well .. so I wanted it to be sort of special as far as denim goes..

The finger is fine, but at the time it scared me to death and hurt.  Nothing now though.  And thanks, I had fun making the costume.  Will definitely do more in the future.

Well as you have seen, these quilts are quite warm even without filling... it would save you time to just not add filling and only stitch around the edges and fray that.  I think with just that it would be plenty warm.  If you did want the extra thickness and warmth, would you want to quilt it or tie it to keep the batting in place?

Thanks Tina, it was fun when it was not frustrating.  No more sewing for me for a while.  Gotta finish up the afghan now.

On this one I put the seams on the inside. So it would be not really a rag quilt.. Hmmm are you saying just frey around the quilt? I could probably do that..  :ScratchHead: I am still in the thinking mode..

Thank goodness I thought you actually got your finger in there!!
I bet Mike is going to live in that :laughmao:

great costume Triss. Sorry about the finger.

Rita definitely add the pictures before the backing or else each stitch that hold a pic on will show through the back too.
You could do the outer edges with the fringyfray like in the rag quilts or fold it in and have a smooth edge. Then you can tie using yarn, embroidery floss, etc so the front and back layers dont slide around.

Thanks Wrennie Christy and everyone.. I think I will do the smooth finish on this one..  :SmileyQmarks: still not sure about it yet though. I am still working on that.. with the denim being so thick and I have a LOT of thick seams I am still up in the air about the backing and batting  :dunno:

Wrennie what do you fill them with? I have heard Rice or Sand and never knew which one to use?

Those are a good project and I am sure quick to make

Oh I like that idea Wrennie, those are nice.

Quick question.  If I were going to make reusable hand warmers/ice packs.  What is the best thing to use in them that can be kept in the freezer or microwaved?  Is it rice or beans or what?

I made them with wheat kernels from a feed store, Triss. I love the smell of wheat pillows warmed in the micro. Add a cup of water next to them while heating to keep them moist so they won't actually burn (or pop).

And they hold up well in the freezer also?  I was thinking of making a few to add to my gift baskets this year.

I made over fifty of them for gifts for everyone 5 years ago. I had Ted's kindergarten teacher ask for more. Her son ripped hers off to take to college along with his football scholarship.

Sounds like a hit then.  I will look around for wheat kernels, we have a feed store pretty close.  Are wheat kernels subject to those moths?

Yes, Triss. Keep them tightly sealed until you use them. I could only get fifty pound bags here. I hope you can get more reasonable sizes there.

Oh man I hope so as well.  I do not want to make that many.  Do birds eat wheat kernels?

Yes, birds will eat it. I actually tossed some in my food processor and cooked it like any hot cereal. Kashi. I used more than a hundred pounds of it in the wheat pillows though. I do believe you can use rice or other whole grains as well. Check out the prices first.
