Bird sightings.
« on: Feb 16, 2008, 02:24:03 PM »
This weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count sponsored by the Cornell Lab of ornithology and National Audubon Society. You can still participate if you want to. You don't have to be an expert bird IDer! You can do it for just 15 minutes. Or all weekend. Here --> http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc
This morning on my way in I saw 2 American Robins eating left over apples in a tree down the street from my house.
Marton just called and told me we had an invasion of Cedar Waxwings across the street. He estimated 75!!  :thspeechless-vi: They are big fruit eaters and were in the multiflora rose, honeysuckle, and other yet to be determined, brambles across the street.
Aren't they pretty! --> http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Cedar_Waxwing.html
Anyone else have any cool or spring is coming sightings?

Look, I know the supernatural is something that isn't supposed to happen, but it does happen...RZ

We have birds like crazy right now.  I do need to get some pics to ID them cuz I have no idea what they all are but this week I saw some with very bright yellow on them.  Will have to keep my camera close by the window since I filled the feeders this weekend.  Once the sun comes out today, so will the birds.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

Thanks for the link, Wrennie!  :thx:   Probably the only interesting birds around here have been the large number of Cardianls we've had this year!  :yesssss:  It seems like there's been a lot more than in the past!!!    :ScratchHead:

Boy, those Cedar Waxwings are beautiful!   :Wow:

I don't see white feathers all over the yard so I hope Albino Bird flew back home.

I can't find our bird thread.  These are 2 of the birds that were in Ginger's pine tree this weekend.

I had bluebirds in the backyard and on the deck today.  I'm not sure they have ever been that close to the house before.  And then the most interesting thing happened.  I heard a knocking on the back door.  Well there are no stairs back there so it was questionable I had heard correctly but I went to check.  Shadow was standing up leaning on the back door looking at the wood pecker that was looking in the house while holding onto the trim in the glass panel of the door.  He had knocked as if to say happy thanksgiving.  It was just great to see him.  Maybe he was telling me he liked the addition of the bird bath to the garden.

I liked it yesterday.  I wasn't too keen on it today.  I began wondering what kind of damage he could do to the trim on that window.

Yes, they can damage. I'd watch and maybe put something up that might scare him away if he wants to continue. A shiny pie plate hanging around may work.

I just happen to have one of those.  It's got the rest of the pumpkin pie in it at the moment but that won't last long.  lol.
