My Little Puddle
« on: Mar 10, 2007, 01:42:20 AM »

I ought to be ashamed to tell you what I did to my little puddle at the end of last year. I will show you a picture, though, when I get it down/up loaded to help explain it....

In the meantime, when am I supposed to start feeding Samson and Delilah again? They sure are looking hungry out there....

Yep, the mulched area around the pond has the greenest grass within 20 miles. I've already mowed it once!

Since the hay worked so well as mulch for me last Spring, I thought I would try to mulch with again at the end of winter. I picked up a bale at the feed store and put it into the trunk of the car. Jim said he would bring me more, if I needed it. He brought me three bales home in the truck.

I didn't take into account that the bales I used the previous Spring had been setting up for a year (since the wedding) and that the seeds died during that year. Let me tell you that those fresh bales had really viable seeds! ;D

Jim mowed around the pond for me a couple of days ago. I told him we need to spread hay around all eight acres to have the prettiest lawn around!

Anyway, I will definitely be finding something different to mulch with this year... :D

I just added some real plants to the pond day before yesterday:

Louisiana Iris, Mini Cattails, and Calla Lily

I can't wait til they grow. They were sprouting in the pots we bought them in!

Hi Dianna I have a question on the cattails.. Are they a bog type of plant? I have some seeds and am unsure how I should treat them? ???

Rita, I would assume that you could use them in a bog. On the container the plant came in, it said to sink it anywhere from 0" - 8" in the pond. I think that they would work great in a bog!

Seems like I have some seeds around here, too. I will get to looking for them and see what the packet says. I will let you know when I find them....

Penny and April, we bought a pond kit from WalMart for around $100. Jim dug the hole to put the liner in and we have been landscaping the area since. We plan on doing a lot more to the area this Spring/Summer...

Rita, I had "Bunny Tail" seeds, not cattails. I googled cattails and found a lot of information on them. They are definitely a wetland plant, so a bog garden would be an ideal place for it...

That pond kit was just the beginning.  The rock is slate from a local hardware store.  Then we had to build a filter because the water got terribly green and slimy.  Dianna got the pics and instructions off another gardening forum, I think, and we put together a filter that has kept the water crystal clear.  We have to clean it about once a month now.  Right after putting the new filter to work, we cleaned it once a week until the water cleared up.

This kind of pond is really easy to make.  About all you need is a shovel.  Dianna has some pics she took while we were constructing this one that I'm sure she has posted on another forum.

Beautiful pond, Rita! And those boulders are awesome! I wish I could find some to add around my little puddle...

The Bunny Tails are an ornamental grass. I have never planted them before so I don't know how well they will do. I plan on planting them somewhere around here soon when the weather warms up. I got the seeds from a gardening club that we were members of at one time. The things are probably two years old and may not be viable, but I am gonna try it, anyway.

Is that your son out there by the pond, too? He is a doll!

I just love the sound of the pond in the summer it is refreshing and peaceful!

The name is cute for a grass ... I am going to try and start the cat tails inside and see if they sprout or not :)

Yeah, Dianna saw those and I said it would take a crane to get those in here. My Dad said we could have all the rocks we want as he has some old rock fences that were built years ago. Some have been replaced with wire but the rocks remain. Guess we will have to make a trip one day soon in the truck and bring back some.

Rocks really do add alot to a pond area! If I could get more I would for sure! I just wished I would not of picked under the pine trees to have a pond :P >:D :D But I am stuck with it now.. It does help with the alge though!!

You Two have a great area to expand and work with.. I put irish moss around the walking area of my pond. Its nice you can walk on it and it feels nice on bare feet!!

a different angle.

We dug the hole about four foot deep. We made our own liner with thick clear plastic we have on a huge roll (Free) and glued it together with pvc glue to make it big enough.  Collected the rocks (Free) and it all has fresh spring water going in 24/7 (Nearly free) It goes out of the pond near where my dog's tennis ball is and goes out to feed trees and shrubs and things.

Tina, I love that puddle of yours.

It looks so natural with all the ornamental grasses out there!

How large is it and how many fish do you have in there?
