Sounds believable to me as well, but the skeptic in me asks how do they know he died on impact?
Keep in mind that Snopes tries to determine whether a story is true or not. In this case maybe it was better to say he died on impact instead of giving you the gory details, like his head was severed or he was cut in half!
Personally I think his desire to say good bye to his family was stronger than death.
That could definitely be true. His final act that could have even continued when he didn't.
