I have hummers as of the 21st when I put my feeders out.  No pics yet but even with all this rain they are flitting around like crazy.  We have Rufus Hummingbirds here and they are quite pretty with their brilliant shimmering red throats.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

We've had a feeder out since middle of last week, but haven't seen any yet.  I saw on the migration map that they are here.  I'll keep watching.

OH I hope you get them soon.  We do not get the same ones as you do so the migration map does not help me out too much.

Well I haven't seen any either,  :smileyNo: but I think it's still a little too early for them to be here.  It's still pretty cold, and we had snow today for Easter; but, at least,  it didn't stick around.  :Yahoo:

We dont usually see any here until mid-april.
This site --> http://www.hummingbirds.net/ has some good info. It says the migration map is for ruby throats because theyre the most commonly seen species.

Well, I was outside for quite a while today and kept my eyes open for any signs of a
hummer,  :Watching:  but I came up empty.  :SmileyFit:  I know it's still a little early, but I keep hoping.

I do the same thing Patti.  Our feeder is hanging so I can see it through the patio door so I keep an eye on it.  So far we have come up blank too.  I noticed on the migration map that there have been some sightings in SC and NC but none here yet.

Actually, Jim, I also have a small hummingbird feeder hanging on my window, but I always see them at my other feeders before they get to that one.  They do use it later in the season,  :yesssss:  so I guess it's takes them a while to get comfortable with the window feeder.  ;)

It was somewhat strange finding this long thread about hummers today - I had the strangest dream about hummers last night and, up till now, thought it was something that had recently happened!

Last year was my first year with a hummer feeder.  I had 2 that came to visit and I'm thinking it was a male and female ruby throated.  This year, I'm wondering where to place the feeder.  Should it be in a full sun spot or is shade preferable?  Mine is always in full shade and I wonder if that is why I didn't have a lot of visitors.

I can't wait until they start coming back my way!!

The hummers are back in our area now. :yay_jump:  I saw a male at the feeder yesterday evening.

Sarah, I have had the feeders in the sun and the shade. I think that the nectar stays "fresher" with a little bit of shade. :)

I've had my hummer feeders in both the sun and partial shade, but never in full shade.  It seems like they prefer the ones in partial shade, but maybe it's just the time of day when I'm out there and see them.

Mine are all out int he full sun.  I had one in the back that was in the full shade but it kept falling off the window so I ma not sure if they would like it back there or not.

Part shade is best. The nectar spoils a lot faster in full sun. Near some cover is important too so they feel safe in case of predators.

It is a male Rufus hummingbird.  Have not seen any of the females yet, they are building nests now.

Great shot.  I still haven't seen the one around here that Dianna saw.  She said it was a male also.

Thanks!  I am hoping for more and I really hope this year I can get a pic of the Anna's hummers.  I only saw a few last year.

Well, I keep watching, but still haven't seen any of my hummers around here.  :smileyNo:  They should be showing up pretty soon, then I'll feel like spring is truly here.   :Whis:
