I got a little lemon balm a few years ago. I still pull that stuff out of everywhere I don't want it. Some is about 50 yards away from the original planting.
Most times when you find herbs, they have been greenhouse grown. That interferes with the oil development and  natural smells that the plants are supposed to have. Usually after you get them out into fresh air and sun light, they develop what you are looking for, scent and flavor.
The same goes with many types of flowers, gardenias and carnations and such.

I did not know that about the essential oils.  That's very interesting.

I planted some lemon balm a couple of years ago when I first got here.  It shriveled up and died.  I'm hoping to have better luck this time.  who knows maybe it is my new lawn lol.

I have found several very large patches of lemon basil around the house.  The largest patch is about 3.5x3.5 feet.  I can't wait to mow it over!!

Mow it???  What about harvest, dry, preserve?  Lemon basil is good stuff, isn't it?

i would definitely harvest.  If it is basil just make sure you don't mow all the stems off and kill it.  it is a bush with a single trunk.

What do you do with lemon basil?  I don't think it tastes good fresh and I can't get past it's fuzzy texture.

I have the same problem with a lot of herbs, Sarah. It is often the texture that throws me off. As I am aging I like my foods more plain, too. So herbs don't appeal as much as they used to do.

If fresh does not appeal to you then dry it Sarah... then crush it up.  Lemon basil is good on chicken and fish.

Lemon basil isn't fuzzy.  Are you maybe getting it confused with lemon balm?

Herbs are meant to be used sparingly.  Try folding the leaf up very tightly and julianning it into tiny strips.  and then folding it into a tossed salad.  It should add a refreshing taste to the salad without being overpowering.

I have trouble getting rosemary to grow too. Everyone says it's so easy to grow. I must be trying to hard.

Dianne and I saw some pineapple sage at Wally World. I tasted it. Taste like pineapples.

A while back I bought some stevia just because I didn't know what it was. UM sweet.

Aunt Bonnie...I've killed more rosemary than I'd like to admit. I think I water it too much.

Sarah...don't even get me started on lemon balm. Some moron planted it in the back yard, then another moron box graded the whole thing. I'll be killing lemon balm until I die. If it helps...it does repel bugs, and makes a neat pesto.

I have 25 year old rosemary that often doesn't see water all summer. It does do best without irrigation. I take a hose to it on occasion to get the dust and cobwebs of it. Rain does it the rest of the time.

Anything the repels bugs is ok by me.  Man I have so many spiders you'd think it was a Vegas convention.

I have tried to start the basil seeds several times but the sprouts keep dying on me.  I believe my potting soil is to old.  So I'm going to put it in the compost piles and rejuvenate it.  And I'll get some more potting soil and give the seeds another shot once it climbs down out of the nineties.

Basil loves to be wet and hot. I direct sow into black pots on a brick wall in full sun all day.

once I get new potting soil I'll definitely try it again.  Right now the money is going towards the home repairs.
