of all times to hit a stud
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 07:41:51 AM »
The guest bathroom toliet paper holder isn't installed well.  Ok lets see if I can explain this one.

When it was installed they used metal anchors for the screws.  But on one side they hit a stud.  So when I drive the screw in the wallboard bows out and cracks.  Will it hold the toliet paper holder...yes.  Does it look awful yes.

So I thought I would dig out the anchor and just move the hole thing.  But I can't get the anchor out of the wall.

What is the best fix?  I'm willing to pain the bathroom so if there is some damage that's ok.

Thank you for your help.

I think that you may have to tap the anchor in deeper and plug the hole.  Then you can relocate the whole set up to a space that will work better.

you can just tap the anchor in to inset it, then fill.  i've done that.  better than tapping it all the way through.

then yes, you will need to paint.

Anchors are hard to remove since some of them have a bur that sticks out on the sides ,and when hammered or screwed in it buries that bur into the wood, I would either bury it in further and cover it with wood dough and glue it over the blemish, or use double sided tape to hang the toliot dispencer back up. Also consult with Home Depo to see if they may come up with a better solution. I just came up with a  get one of those toilet paper sticks/ stands and set next to the thrown, or Duct tape it. <~~~~Definitly a mans answer to something broke.

You can hammer it deeper into the stud. Then putty and redo the wall right there.

Is it a plastic anchor or a metal one with a wing-back?

it's metal but doesn't have the wing-back it just widens as you screw you screw in.  Boy that sentence is a killer.

Can you get a pair of vise-grips around the edge of the anchor? I think it's gonna have to be pulled out...

Ooooooh that's a fair size patching job after.  Ok I can do that.  Thanks for giving me the "hard" answer.  Now maybe I'll get in there and do it.  It's been sitting there needing repair since I moved in.
