Storm Damage
« on: Jul 25, 2009, 08:59:18 AM »
Well I guess I didn't mention this when it happened.  I don't know how I failed to but i did.  We have aTornado through here fortuntely it missed me.  But the wind and rain has done some damage.

Evidently when the wind blows really hard it can drive the rain underneath the shingles.  That happened in the master bath so I need to paint the bathroom ceiling.  It's popcorn so I think it needs to be done with a sprayer.  Is that right or will a roller get into all the cracks and crevises?

Then it took out my electric to the shed and spoiled all of the meat i had in the freezer.  That really hurt.  My friends husband came over and said the wiring to the shed was a mess and that i needed extra boxes and special tubing to run it underground and a bunch of other stuff.  it sounds expensive and not something that the insurance will cover since it's just mistakes the former owner made when he originally wired it.

Then of course the siding came loose from the wind.  it's not broken but it's up high and with my fear of heights it's a problem.

So it's been a very interesting week.

If you have any suggestions for the work that needs to be done please let me know.

I think we have the same issue with the wind underneath the shingles, Tammy.  We had 90 mph straight line winds, out of the west, and now there are these weird "bubbles" in the paint on the ceiling out on the breezeway--it's the only roofline that is parallel to the winds that came in.  Is that what your ceiling is doing??

Weather sucks, it's always doing things that we don't think it should!  I hope that you get everything straightened out okay.  Do you have an Angel Food Ministry near you??  Nevermind, I checked and there are a few in a big city near you.  If you haven't, you may want to look into them for groceries.  They give you $60 worth of food for $30 including things like fresh produce, meats, canned, and dry goods.  It is a good program - if it suits your food preparation desires.  I don't use it 'cause there are often pre-packaged things that I would never, ever use (like pancake mix) but I don't know -- maybe you would?   :dunno:  Anyway, here is the link to Angel Food Ministries, if you'd like to check it out.

Fortunately the water came in at the skylight and down the painted side of the ceiling.  What you are discussing is sheet rock that has gotten wet.  Or at least that is what it sounds like.  If so you will have to remove the sheet rock and patch the resulting hole.  Then most likely texture the ceiling so that it doesn't show the patch.  And you need to do it before the mold starts to grow on it since that can create the toxic mold that has destroyed so many houses.  At least that is my understanding of it.

All i need to do is get a good primer that will cover stains and then paint it.  I'm thinking about choosing a cream color in there.  It will go well with the dark green manmade marble linoleum.  Bet i didn't spell that right.

I think there is a popcorn texture in an aerosol can, Tammy. It should work well if the area isn't too large. I have been meaning to look for it because we had a leak in our bathroom from the vent when we first moved here and the popcorn just peeled right off a few months later. If I find it and use it, I will let you know how it works... :grinnnn:

Thanks Dianna but I was responding to a previous post.  All I need to do is prime and paint the ceiling.  My actual ceiling is still structurally sound.  One of the church members is a general contractor and is going to come over and see about doing the repair work.  I'm thrilled with that.  I'll be paying for the parts.  Hopefully that won't cost to much.  He even said I could hang over his shoulder and try and learn some of this stuff.

I think Dianna was making a suggestion that pertained to this comment:

You do have a couple of options with the electrical, at least here we do.  Be sure and check your local electrical codes.  They make a direct bury cable that you can use instead of having to bury the electric cable in conduit.  It is approved for use here as long as it is buried at least 12 inches deep.

I ran the power to my shed but I had an empty breaker slot in the main panel.  It's definitely not good to run it from a slot that is already being used.

direct bury cable.  Thankyou for mentioning that, I'll look into it.  of course me digging 12 inches into clay and rocks is going to be really fun.  I haven't been able to get that deep yet but it doesn't mean i can't try again.

And thankyou for correcting me on Dianna's comment.  I got confused.  That happens to me alot.

Tammy, we bought a 14 oz. can of Popcorn Texture from WalMart last night. It cost $12.67. It is supposed to cover 6 square feet. I'll let you know how it works out for us... :grinnnn:

Well Brother Beasley from the church came over and fixed everything in one afternoon.  He was amazng.  He also found some serious problems and fixed those too.  He left with the remarks that I can expect to have to replace my roof in 4 to 5 years.  And he gave me an estimate of the cost.  So now I'm having to put 100 dollars a month away to pay for the tax credit and the new roof.  At least I have time to plan for it.  But it puts my garden on hold for those 5 years.  Because I don't have any extra money now at all.
