My pond as of 9/20/09
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 09:55:55 PM »
Just thought I'd share a few pictures.  I grew all the Zinnia's from seeds and let me tell you---I got lazy with them and they looked terrible for a while but WOW did they ever take off when I planted them in the ground.  Love sitting out there.  I have 10 goldfish in my pond and at least 100 tiny mosquito fish.  Mark dug it out in one day by himself.  Instead of doing shelves around the edge I discovered a much easier way of ponding.  Dig 3 levels.  Left end is shallow and I can put my potted plants there if I want to.  Middle is medium, and the far right is 3 feet deep so the fish can overwinter.  They all made it thru last winter with flying colors.  Even though it froze solid many times.  Well I do float a few balls in there so there are holes for gases to escape.

I have big plans for it.  If I ever come up with the money.   :rolleyes1:  I've had big plans for it now for years.  Involving a retaining wall around the backside of it so the slope doesn't keep slipping each year.

The lilies were bananas this year.  Tons and tons of leaves and flowers.

From the back corner.

This was taken from my upper back porch.

Thank you very much.  It gives me great joy and didn't cost much to make at all.  Just the cost of the pump and filter box.  This is the 3rd year I believe for this pond.  Before this one I had a MUCH smaller one.  A puddle really.

Thanks everyone.  I like lots of color and when I garden I just throw what I like wherever I like.  No formal gardening here.  I have thought about surrounding it the whole way with different grasses but then I keep thinking I'd miss the color.

I love it! Have you ever planted four o'clocks around it?

Four o'clocks are what we call Mirabilis jalapa because that is about the time of evening that they open, Johnnie

Your pond has really grown since last I saw pictures of it. Beautiful, Laura!

Mirabilis does form a bulb/tuber. But it also seeds like crazy and is easily treated as an annual.

Do I see ghosts in the tree in the second pic? Have you already started decorating for Holloween?  I love your pond.  I really need to get rich to get some of these trees out of here so I can do things with this property!

Very pretty! I think you'd miss the color too if you went with grasses.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments.  I have never grown 4 o'clocks.  I should absolutely try some around there.     Penny, I still have the frog you sent out.  He's pretty lazy.  He just lays there day after day.  Kicked back with his hands behind his head.

And yes.  They are ghosts in my tree.  I bought some the other day and didn't want to forget about putting them up, my neighbor had her stuff up already so I just threw 'em in there.

Sure, send 'em on up!

My pond after my chopping spree yesterday.   :SmileyFit:  I hate cutting everything down, it kills me....but it has to be done.  Everything was still growing so nicely.  But there could be a frost tonight.  Really cold weather isn't far away.  I still have SO much to do.  Have to cut it all down anyway, have a bunch of bulbs to get planted.

What is that off to the right of your pond?  Looks like water.
