Dianna, When I went from years of 2% milk back to whole milk, I just felt better. I was more satisfied in general and tended to be satisfied with less. So I drank less milk looking for what my body was asking for. I lost weight.
Same with the switch to real butter. Less is more satisfying.
Now I am on the search for raw milk, or at least non-homogenized. I want  a simple search. I do not want to drive 4 towns over if I can help it.
Sarah if I find a source of raw milk can I freeze it? Will it harm or alter it too much?

I found the organic valley milk at our food co-op but it said ultra-pasteurized.  Is that okay?  I haven't had luck finding raw milk and I need to slowly switch my family.  They might protest. :giggle:

Tina, I have a few gallons frozen, but when I thaw them it's to make cheese, not for drinking, so I'm not sure. I'll watch closer next time...which will be soon.

Ultra pasteurized is better than homogenized.

But Tina, if you find raw milk how will you know what the cows were fed?  There is a place in a town about 30 miles from here where the farmer sells his milk straight from the cow but I have no idea about how the animals are treated.

You can ask to see. Most are more than willing to talk to you about it. If they are not...keep walking.

Not a problem at all. Do you like smoothies?

I've had a couple with Darbi at a place called LaVida Mocha.  She gets a vanilla bean frappuccino hold the whipped cream and I get a berry smoothie with extra whipped cream.

That's a great start. I'd get a small container of vanilla yogurt, and whatever frozen berries you like. Start with one spoon of yogurt, a cup or so of berries, and three or four ice cubes. Add a splash of milk, water, or juice, and blend until smooth. Taste, add sweetener if needed.

As you get more use to the taste, start upping the amount of yogurt.

Don't look at it while you spoon it out, Sheri. Better yet, freeze it. It looks a lot like ice cream then and not snot. I like some frozen yogurt.

i wish there were a good answer to the chocolate thing.  to back track. but you guys are moving quick.

i don't like ovaltine.  scott will drink it but the only malt i like (and i think that is a nostalgia thing) is malt balls.  nothing else.  no ovaltine, no malted milk shakes, nothing with malt.  but hershey's syrup gets expensive at my house.  i'd be happy for a healthier, cheaper or healthier same price alternative.

Its against the law in Canada to sell raw milk, you can drink it if you personally own the cow, but to sell it, you can face jail time from it.

We've got 7 acres.  Maybe I should buy a cow.

Do it.  We live in the country but don't have a good spot for a cow.  Some friends of ours do though.  They have horses and chickens.  They said that they would be willing to get a cow and feed it daily (we would help with the expenses) and in the end we would split it.  I like the idea.  We will have to talk to them more about it.  But Sheri, don't let it become a pet.  You won't want to have it butchered and you wouldn't be able to eat it.

I'm talking about a milk cow.  I would never be able to kill one and eat it.  Maybe if we had a lot of them but I'm sure 1 cow will be a pet.  Probably even more for Johnny.

If I ever move again, I'm soooo getting one of these:

For now, I'll stick with the goats.

We did talk about it with them a little last weekend but I need to bring it up again and see if we can make it happen.  It would be great!

Sheri, I forgot that you won't eat frozen meat.  That wouldn't be good for you then.  A milk cow.  That is a good idea too.

They are dairy goats, but they didn't "take" when I had them bred. I'll be doing it again this year, at some point.

Ideas to add veggies to meals:

Grate a carrot or two into taco meat

add finely chopped greens to soups and such, they look like herbs.

Add more veggies to pasta sauce, even puree if needed.

Those mini-cows are sweet. Can they be used in milk production?
