2011 Vegetable Garden II
« on: Mar 20, 2011, 02:56:39 PM »
Jiffy, I'll give that a try.  We love squash and it would be nice to have it throughout the year.  Do you blanch it first?  I like squash more than I like green beans.

I don't think Johnny had ever gardened before he met me and I had never before I married my first husband.  It's not to late for Scott to learn to love it.  (not that Johnny's so happy about it either  )

From what I understand it can be refrigerated for as long as 4 months.

tammy, you are right, it keeps a LONG time in the fridge. but if you are going to freeze, do it right after picking.

sheri, i didn't.  i didn't think to.  i mostly use it in stir fry, so that is how i cut it up.  like i would for stir fry.  and then just froze it.  it was good.

Have you tried the Squash Risotto?  I did it once but I wasn't particularly thrilled with it.  Now my friend juanita like it.

That's why I love my breakfast stools.  I can sit on it and stir a pan of risotto until it is done.

My first two plantings of radishes have sprouted, yippee!

I found 2 more tires at the dump so now I just need one more and I'm done collecting tires.  Now I just need more compost and garden soil toted up there and put in them.  No problem lol.

have you ever kept squash in the frig for 4 months?  I think it would get either too soft or too hard.

I'm going to try it anyway Aunt Bonnie.  For some reason I don't trust you.  Maybe it's because you're trying to convince everyone that little angel is you.  It's not quite right when you have to write "This is me" and draw an arrow.

The rabbit got 9 of the heads of romaine lettuce.  He's got six to go.

Well to protect my last two heads of romaine I went out this morning and sprinkled them with the red and black pepper mixture.  I hope it works.  Those heads are now very expensive.  I see that the swiss chard has started to come up so I sprinkled them too.  Then I took the two tomato starts that were getting to leggy and transplanted them into taller pots and buried the excess stem.  So far so good.  Although they are not going to be the size I expected come the 15th.

I don't know what you're planning, Sheri, but I always cook squash and freeze it.  It tastes just as good as freshly cooked and is a nice treat through the winter.

All the romaine is gone.  I'm going to have to come up with a better plan before I plant lettuce of any kind again.

Might be ok if you liked boiled squash. YUK

Oh, and by the way, sure that little angel is me. It's okay for you to admit it. Everybody else already knows it.

duh, I don't know how you'll keep the rabbits out of the lettuce patch without putting a top over it some how.

I think I'll just buy my lettuce at the grocery store.  That experiment didn't work at all well.

Well some of the swiss chard is comming up.  I wonder if rabbits like swiss chard.  They leave the radishes alone.  I've decided that I'm going to give the peppers and the tomatoes another week before I put them in the ground.

Well I transplanted the tomatoes into taller pots and covered them up right to their first leaves.  By next week they should be sturdy enough to handle outside.  At least that is the hope.  If they aren't then I'll just keep them inside until payday.

I've brought in two bunches of radishes so far.  They're so good.  I'm going to reseed tomorrow.   Some of the lettuce will be ready this week and I'll reseed it too.  I hilled the potatoes tonight for the first time.  Everything is looking good.
