How to sprout potatoes

(1/2) > >>

UNCLEG:
How do you do it?  I have read several conflicting answers on gardening sites so I thought I would ask, Right now they are in my pantry in the kitchen, seems like all my other potatoes sprout in there wether I want them to or not, just in a hurry to get them in the ground.

Thanx

Tina:
Most potatoes grown for your table are treated not to sprout too much. So they are more difficult these days.
Are you talking about those?

UNCLEG:
Yeah thats what I am talking about.  Its what my Granfather always did.  Seems that I can sprout russet at white potatos whitout wanting to.  Just got some red new potatoes to try.  Just being impatient.

Jim:
Just about any cool, dark dry place will work.  I bought some seed potatoes at Wal-mart and they already had some sprouts on them.  The ones I planted all had at least one eye but not all had sprouts.

The old folks used to keep the potatoes in barrels and all the little ones always worked themselves to the bottom of the barrel.  It was normally kept in the cellar.  Once the potatoes were about finished, the little ones left at the bottom of the barrel were the ones planted for the next year.

My first year, I cut them and put them in the closet to let them get a "scab" over where they were cut.  I didn't have any that came up.  The next year, I just took the bag with me to the field and cut them with my pocket knife right before planting.  I had much better results that time and did the same this year.  Mine are already peeking through.

UNCLEG:
Thanx Jim,  I went and got seed potatoes today.  Gonna plant them Saturday.  Cutting them and planting them at the same time is the way we always did it.  I have not realy worked a garden since I was a teenager...I'm having to relearn everything.
