Ripping them yourself should be giving you some lovely sawdust/sheds. We used a bunch of that as a playground ground cover under our swing when John was ripping cedar. It lasted a long time and stayed soft, fluffy and bug free.

Some of the mums i replant when i take them out, some i just throw out and it makes room for the winter stuff.

The planter boxes stay up all year, and i change things out for each season.
