clearing the yard
« on: Jul 10, 2012, 09:06:06 PM »
tina asked for some before and after photos, which i thought was a very good idea.  so here we go.

first is jeff, the person who not only donated the use of his tractor & bush hog, but ran it, then would not accept money for the fuel! it is one of his friends from church leaned over...

and while we are talking about pictures of jeff, i have a couple more of him that i have to share... one where he got the tractor stuck crossing a ditch that i told him he could not cross :wink5:

this is a good picture of jeff clearning the field where my drain field is.  you can see how high the brush had gotten behind him.  and in front of the tractor.  but he made short work of it.

this is a before of where i like to toss my eggs :wink5:

and this is after

this is another after from the same position, just turned in a slightly different direction

this is just the "front" yards, back yard next post.

We needed a tracked vehicle to clear our hillside a bit. A tractor would not work for most of it.
It does look good. And with my dry climate, it looks a lot safer to me.

yeah, i know.  matthew was inspired and HAD to have me go out and show him some more trees to cut, he was inspired by jeff :good2:

This is David, he's cutting out a bunch of sweet gums.  i will be planting my fig tree on the other side of the pine tree where he is cutting out those sweet gums.  he took out about 6 of them, all about that size while jeff was running the tractor

i missed this "in progress" front yard, you can see what he was up against

Matthew helped Jeff get unstuck in the back, he was going across the tree rows and got caught by a smallish silver maple that was hiding offset behind one of the pines

while matthew was helping jeff free up the bush hog, he noticed some welding that needed to be done on the decking of it, and he volunteered to help jeff out.  and when jeff brought the tractor back around front, matthew promptly did some of the work needed.  he is going to go to jeffs and do some more later this week. :good2:

this is one of the back yard, of a track he cleared next to a track he did not

and here is a better picture where you can see how far he got in the track he cleared

and that's all folks!  well, not really but you get the idea :giggle:

no, really you do not.  lots of tinder, but not much actual fire wood.  those are smoky pines :razberry:  but there is a lot of maple, bay, and myrtle that was run down and will be good tinder in a week or two.

tinder is like kindling.  i couldn't think of kindling when i was typing.  just small twings and branches that have dried and will help a fire start well.

Wow, BIG difference. That's what I needed at my place on the edge of town when I had it. He is a great friend to do all that without charging anything. It would have cost a small fortune if you'd have had to pay for it. Looks great.
Dear Lord, On this day, please wrap your arm around my shoulder and keep your hand over my mouth.  Amen

i was expecting to pay at least $40 in fuel costs.  and he worked from 8 am until 4 pm, with only a lunch break in there and the break while matthew was doing the welding.

I want a bush hog.  I guess that will go on my christmas list next year.

Now are the bay the bay laurel that the bay leaf seasoning comes from?  If so save me a little one and I'll pay the postage.  I really want a pay laurel for my shade area.  Something to replace one of the chestnut acorns.

most of it is my "front yard" and i have to get the under brush cleared out every few years because of fire danger.  i can't do a controlled burn - not enough water/man power.  and i want to put some different trees in the front.  i doubt i'll get them out, but i'm going to try.  the back, we were just trying to beat it back to keep it from eating the back yard/house.  and to keep access to my well, which is in the middle of a thick growth of it.

It's good to clean out.  Did I mention that we had a snake in the driveway Tuesday?  It was little, the cat was aggravating it or it would have crawled away, and because I wasn't sure of the kind I murdered it.  When I felt like looking at it really good it's just a baby king snake and I regret killing it.  I see several snakes a year and if we didn't try to keep the underbrush cleaned out I'm sure I'd be seeing more.
