Church of the Holy Cross - Sumter, SC
« on: Aug 16, 2006, 11:07:14 PM »
Chris and Ashley were down tonight and mentioned the Church of the Holy Cross in Sumter. Both have been there and Chris says he hates to drive by there. Ashley says she can get us permission to go out there if we have enough interest. We just need to pick a day that Chris is off. Preferably one of the weekends that there isn't any karaoke. Here is what Shadowlands says about the site:

"Sumter - Church of the Holy Cross- Dalzell, North 261 - Church Cemetery is haunted by a Confederate Soldier that apparently had an untimely death. Eyewitnesses see him strolling through the cemetery, and disappearing before they can approach him. There has also been a woman sitting in a low-lying tree, with her legs crossed. This is a genuinely haunted cemetery."

Sounds like it might be interesting. Lets pick a date within the next month or two and see how that works.

Had lunch with Chris today.  He is going to talk to Ashley and see when we can get permission, preferably on a Friday or Saturday night.  He knows if it is Saturday we would have to de-conflict the dates.  We'll work that if need be.  I told him we would prefer to get there about 9:00PM in the evening and plan on staying a couple of hours.  He's working this weekend, but his schedule changes quite often so we can't depend on him being off next weekend, etc.

Who is interested in going?

Saw a documentary on ETV tonight on the Church of the Holy Cross in Sumter.  It was more along the lines of history than paranormal.  They did mention that Joel Ralph Poinsett was buried in the graveyard near the church.  He's the person deemed responsible for bringing what we know as the Poinsettia to the US from Mexico.

Services are not being held in the church currently as it is undergoing some extensive renovation.  The church site is over 200 years old, the building constructed approximately 1850-1852.

If you enjoy history, here is an interesting article about the church.
