It seems there is a new scam going on out there that will catch some unsuspecting folks if you aren't careful. It starts various ways but could be a random phone call that appears to be from a group that claims to be part of Microsoft's technical support network. They say your computer has some corrupt files and is sending out corrupted data packets that all sounds so technical and legit. They say they can help and even give you links to Facebook testimonials of how they have helped others. Additionally they say they need to access your computer to determine the extent of the problem so they can help to resolve it.
Once you give them access, they've got you. While they are supposedly checking the status of your registry, etc, they are disabling any installed security software and altering the registry so that their software is the only thing that will easily fix it. Oh, and right about now is when they tell you the price. If you have let them get this far, you may not even be able to restore your system to a previous date before they had access to it.
The company calls themselves My Tech Gurus. They are nothing but a scam. Don't let them access your computer, in fact if they call you, be sure and note the date, time and the number they called you from.
Here is a good link if you want to see more about how these crooks operate.
