2014 Garden Plans
« on: Feb 18, 2014, 11:01:42 AM »
As soon as I get a warm day I plan to do the fruit tree pruning.

Then I need to decide weather I want to give up the moss in the walk way or keep weeding it.  I'm thinking of putting down weed barrier then some type of filler around the stepping stones.  I'm really to the point that I'd like to sell the stepping stones and just fill in the walkway with concrete.  It's so very hazardous as it is.  Especially at night when I can't see what I'm doing.

We pruned our fruit trees at the beginning of fall but I need to check on them.  I think one of the plum trees got struck by lightening.  Wonder if I should plant another one.  We have 1 pear tree and it produces fruit every year.  Will a plum tree produce without another one near by?  What about apple trees cuz one of ours got shredded turning the tornado.

Duh, the places where moss grows in my yard are the places nothing else will grow.  Wonder why weeds are coming up where your moss is.  Are the stepping stones laying on top of the ground so that they're uneven?  I am certainly concerned about you getting your foot caught by one if that is the case.  I think moss will catch on to about anything and grow so maybe if you put down weed barrier and filler of sorts you could plant the moss on top.

Yes the stepping stones are on top and uneven.  It is awful to try and walk on.  A neighbor had a plum tree and it did very well without a second one in the area.  Apples I have no idea.  I've always seen them in pairs but what does that mean.

I've been thinking about that.  Take up the moss put down the weed barrier and then the stones and then the filler and then replace the moss.  But I'm thinking the weeds would come with the moss.  They did before.

Oh jeepers I guess there's no way to get the moss without the weeds.  Everything is supposed to have a purpose but I can't figure out the purpose for weeds or squash bugs.

Today I planted english peas, carrots, beets, and made a raised strawberry patch using bricks.  I tillered it up, put down paper, put down straw from the bales I used last year so they were damp and broken down, the put dirt, then planted.  I hope that keeps the weeds down.

I also planted 2 blueberry bushes.  I think I'm going to have to keep things covered though because we have several mockingbirds living in our yard.

The fruit trees are pruned.  Then I took the stakes from the dead tree and used them to build a functional (but not pretty) trellis for one of the climbing roses.  I plan to do the same with the other three sets.  I'm going to wait until it rains because it's easier to pound the stakes in the ground then.

After that I'm filling in the old cherry tree hole.

Then I'm making where there aren't any daffodils or tulips in the foundation bed and adding them after there season is over.

Then I want to mulch my leaves up.  Tommy fixed the lawn mower and I'm excited to use it.

Am I ready for spring?  Absolutely.  So I have to get the winter damage cleaned up.  Lots of trees are in need of care this year.

That's smart about making the trellis.  Who cares if it's pretty.  It will be when the roses cover it.

I couldn't resist the 5 dollar roses at walmart.  i got a bush variety in a orange-ish color and the jacobs coat climbing rose for the front.  I'm very excited.

I also got some parsley seeds.  I let the others go and I missed having the parsley.  This is the flat italian parsley.

I bought 2 roses one is a hybrid tea rose for the sidewalk bed and one is a climbing jacobs coat of many colors for the ditch bed.  That bed keeps on growing.

I bought a good smelling jasmine for the fence at the road.  I'm going to get some morning glory seeds for that same fence.  I keep hoping the ivy will eventually cover it, because it grows everywhere BUT there, but it's just not happening.

I bought trellises for the climbing roses.  only 4 so the 5th one is still supported by the tree stakes that the old cherry tree was supported by.

The sweet cherry has survived all of the odd weather I'm really please.

My okra plants are still 2 feet high.  They're producing pods but they are midgets.  I've never had midget okra before.  Cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, potatoes are doing good.  The green beans aren't doing well at all.

Sounds pretty good all around except the okra and beans. You will reap something for all of your labors. No chickens still?

The chickens are every where but inside the fence.  Speaking of chickens, my  niece in the city limits of Charlotte, who has chickens in a cute but tiny coop had them all killed by a fox yesterday morning.
