What's in the veggie garden 2015?
« on: May 05, 2015, 10:58:58 AM »
I've fertilized the tomato plants prior to putting them outdoors.  Now I'll give them a week and then put them in the ground.

Potatoes are coming up.  And a few return tomato plants.  So far that's it.

First set are in the ground.  They are taking awhile to recover from transplant shock.  I'm waiting for an overcast day to plant the rest.

Moved 11 tomato plants from the pretend green house to the raised bed today and put the squash in the straw bales.  Covered the potato plants with dirt.  Then it started raining.  Good.

My garden is pitiful.  Is it the weather?  I've usually got little squash by this time of year but my plants are still tiny and the beans haven't even come up.

The squash has done well.  The little tomatoes have done well but the beef steak not so good and the cucumbers have been the worst ever.  There are probably potatoes out there but it's too hot to dig them up.

We are still getting tomatoes but the squash and cucumbers are done as well as Aunt Bonnie's okra.  I ended up with 'patty pan" squash due to a mixed up seed pack box.  I like the straight neck yellow squash better.

Even with the hot weather the tomatoes did better this year than they have in some time.  I originally planted 12 plants and only 3 survived.  They have been producing like crazy.  I replanted the ones that died and so far they have lots of little ones but nothing o any size yet.  All were Big Boy variety.

Finally got rain and a bit of cool weather.  The squash is still growing and the little tomatoes and it appears the cukes have taken off and have flowered but I'm pretty much over it all.

There were so few posts that I'm thinking we should continue this into 2016.  How does that sound?

I'm going to look at the tomato plants when I am in town today.  I'd like to have one that really produces but i probably need to put more work into them to get that to happen.  you know water regularly, fertilize, take off the suckers...sounds like work.

I bought a big bushy Big Boy tomato plant today and I got a box of veggie miracle grow.  Now all I have to do is plant it tomorrow water it well with the fertilizer water and keep it watered.  Or at least that is the plan. Fingers crossed.

I've decided to water the tomato plant every other day.  That is unless it is raining and I don't think this will be a heavy rain year.  That's just and opinion.

it is suppose to hail on thursday so I'll turn over the carry cart over the tomato plant and put a big plastic bag over that when the bad weather is suppose to hit.  At least I have a plan.

My potatoes are doing great.  Aubry and I covered them up a week ago and then I had to cover them again the other day.

No idea why green beans won't grow well here.  At past houses I've had more green beans than the world could eat but I've tried everything here.  I've even moved the garden spot twice but green beans just don't like it here.  I've planted them twice already this season.  I'm going to try once more and then give up on them.

Carrots reseeded themselves and I've got carrots galore coming up.

We need some rain.

Interesting about the green beans.  Could you do a soil test and see what the coop says before you try again?

Great on he carrots reseeding themselves.  I love potatoes but with the diabetes I need to not be eating them like I want to so no planting those.  Too much temptation.

good idea about the soil test.  I'll check on that.  You know I can't grow impatients or pansys either.
