Windows 10?
« on: Jul 31, 2015, 06:30:24 PM »
Has anyone else upgraded to Windows 10 yet?  I reserved my upgrade about a month ago and it downloaded while I was doing other things on the computer.  Last night I scheduled the install, accepted the agreement and this morning it was all done.  So far I like it.  It is very much like Windows 7 and of course was a free upgrade.

I didn't allow it on mine until I heard something about it.

I am still unsure. I will wait a bit to see if any bugs need working out. I did some research and read in a couple of places that if you're running Window 7 (which I am) that unless there is a feature you particularly want in 10 that you might as well stay with 7. 7 will be supported for another 5 years I believe.

Staying with 7 is a personal preference.  Windows 10 is the most up-to date operating system and I always like to try and stay up-to-date.  The new browser is way better than IE if you still use that, too.

So far I like it.  It's pretty slick and seems to start-up and close down much faster than any of the other operating systems.

Was reluctant, went ahead and installed Windows 10.

And, must read: Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do

I disabled what was mentioned in link.

Yeah, I disabled some things as well.  I won't be using Cortana at all.  Don't need that and it is the app that needs to "know" everything in order to work as designed.

good to hear. i've heard mostly good things about windows 10, but... the one thing i did read is that you do NOT want to enable the component that lets your facebook/email etc friends connect to your wifi without a password.  i cant' remember what it is called, but basically, if they are your "friend" and the computer knows that, and they are close enough to use your wifi, if you don't disable the program, it lets them connect, without you even knowing it.  i can't remember all the nitty gritty, but the short of it is, don't do it.

that said, knowing you are happy with windows 10, i think i will upgrade since it is free ;)

I even removed my Microsoft account, and "opt-out" everything that was enabled by default (since you are automatically "opt-in" after installing Windows 10).

We just bought a new computer and it came with Windows 10.  I know nothing about it.  Can I set up my desk top like on my old computer?  Used to be able to right click a page and get an option to save the icon on the desktop.  Not now.  And where do I go to disable Cortana and whatever Jiffy is talking about.  Can you guys just come to my house please.

Here is some good info on "killing" Cortana.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2949759/windows/killing-cortana-how-to-disable-windows-10s-info-hungry-digital-assistant.html

You can definitely set up your desktop like your old computer.  Mine looks just like it did when I went from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

There are links that others have posted here that give you some info on what you want to turn off and leave on.  Lots of info available if you Google it too.

the thing i couldn't remember is called "wifi sense" and you have to turn it off.  I plan to turn it off, and based on the information i have read, there is a way to keep google from using their version of it as well.

I put Windows 8.1 back on mine, just temporary though.

Next month going to buy Windows 10, just so I could get rid of all the crap from dell thats added with Windows 8.1, like dell, but not the garbage they add.

I've  had a few issues with 10 and am thinking of going back to 7.  I've been on the phone with IT and they say it's because there are bugs that have yet to be worked out.  We were on the phone for over an hour doing updates, which he says come out daily, so maybe it will help.

well, i took windows 10 off my laptop.  i haven't decided on the netbook yet, but the laptop definitely won't have it.  the problem is that it is a resource hog.  i found that even after disabling 3/4 of the optional stuff (or more), when i would be typing, like here, the mouse pad would lock up on me.  i thought at first it was the mouse pad wearing out, but even an external mouse would not work.  so... i just uninstalled it, re-imaged the hard drive from the image i made right before i installed 10, and everything is working just fine now. :dunno:

i'll let y'all know how the netbook works.

It is forcing itself on people now. It won't on mine since the link never showed up to start with. Guess my Laptop isn't compatible. Right now it lets you cancel the install but it will keep  bugging you and from what I read, at some point the cancel won't be there. I don't think they should have the right to force the upgrade.

I agree Barb.  Why do they want to force that on us?

i keep x-ing out the option.  even after i upgraded, uninstalled and went backwards, it is still trying to get me to upgrade.  that is NOT happening.  it is a resource hog.

From what I read, Jen, there will come a time where there is no exiting from the screen....

IF you schedule the update, that is true.  but if you don't "click" the update box, it can't force an update.  i found that out the hard way :razberry:
