Title: Galland
Post by: Pharmerphil on Jul 29, 2007, 08:18:02 AM
I hope that someday soon, we will have the time to visit my old stomping grounds.
There is a small "spot" on the Mississippi river called Galland.
I lived there for a couple years.
Down the road is the Galland School house, the first school house in Iowa!
Above the house I lived in, on top the bluff, on the same road...
was Galland Cemetery, just as old as the school!
I bid on and won the caretaking position for the cemetery.
In the cemetery there was many old graves, but at the back, just beyond where the grass had been mowed, with vines and tress wrapped around it, was a huge tombstone, at least 12 foot tall, with a eerie looking angel on top.
The grave was that of a very young girl, I believe, but will confirm, she was 3 years old.

I cut the trees, pulled the vines, mowed, and when I was done, it was once again...part of the cemetery.
then things started getting WEIRD...

My ex-wife became pregnant with my youngest daughter...not a big deal..but she WAS on birth control...
Lost my crops that season
Many coyotes started roaming the cemetery, I found feces everywhere, yet there was no prominate food source there for them
Our well started smelling like rotten eggs..coincidence ? :Whis:

When we go, I will take pictures, get the name and age...and see if the next caretaker has mowed around this grave..... :yikes:

:Wow: Phil that is quite an interesting story.  We would love to see the pics and hear more about your trip back there.  Sure hope you can get some pics of the tombstone you described.  I enjoy walking the graveyards in the late evening before it gets dark so you can get some decent shots of the unique gravestones.

It's nice to go back later then and see what you may get in a pic.

I love to walk through old cemeteries and read the tombstones.  Then I always try to imagine what the person's life was like when they were alive.    I also wonder what trials and adversaries they faced during their life,  :( and how their life would be so different if they lived in our world today. :ScratchHead:

I sure hope that you get to go soon, Phil. It would be very interesting to know if the new caretaker has had any strange happening.

 :SmileyFear: :Wow: :SmileyFear:

Did you warn the next caretaker that took over the position, Phil? I bet you wished someone had thought to warn you, huh? :o

Maybe the little girl did not want to be disturbed and liked being by herself? It all sounds very strange. I wonder how she ended up "crossing over" at that young age? What years were inscribed on the stone?

Spooky stuff there. I don't know if I would want to go back to take pictures, but if you are brave enough to do so, I can't wait to see them. :grinnnn:

I'm curious as to why the grass was not mowed till Phil did it?  Was there some reason the outgoing caretaker didn't mow that grave?  Did he just not know it was there or did he avoid it for a reason?

Aren't we just full of questions?

jim. I'm not sure why, and the only person who knew was a cratchety old man who wasn't very friendly at all.
But the entire cemetary was well mowed, but just up to about two foot from the tombstone of which I speak.

This sounds rather spooky with the things that has happened already.I am full of the same questions everyone else is .Maybe the little girl was bothered
before she past on and she just wants to be left alone or she could have been murdered and is angry at everyone. You never know.
