April m'dear, trust me on this... if I can make it work, anybody can!

When I lived in NW Montana the growing season was too short to "bother" with flowers... it was all I could do to get veggies in & up & harvested & canned within 90 days, so that was all I had time for, anyway!

When we moved to Oregon 3 years ago, I was laid up with bad knees the first summer & didn't even know what was growing in the gardens outside the house we bought, that first summer. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSadShakeHead.gif&hash=e09d8898b6820c3dd8906189f9e1f73347121d82) After I had my knees replaced, I woke up one morning the following spring to find that the entire town had exploded in color... & I discovered flowers! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fshock.gif&hash=9fff64dcf2ff5dfdad0e0e7c56d1770fe44911e6)

I took an immediate interest in gardening, did my homework, & with the help of a lot of gardening friends, things started growing for me! There's still a whole lot that I don't know, but I'm having the time of my life learning & doing!

Here's what I found in my yard today....

   (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FHiDaff.jpg&hash=f98779c947aa37c7fb917e4caddfa87e148457ef)
Wood Hyacinth & Daffodils,

   (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FDaffsHi3-10.jpg&hash=e9741e4f04a137176ab54fafd0153337c476eec5)
More Hyacinth & Daffodils (& Tulips that are just waking up),

A Primrose & 2 stray Wood Hyacinth (Don't know how they got there) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)

...and 3 kinds of Daffodils!

Some of these Daffs (maybe all)? ??? might actually be Narcissus... I'm not sure that I know the difference yet!
I'm a gardener now!! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FBananaWoohoo.gif&hash=ef555da476cf29a97386a7bc48673bf55510398a)
(Most of these spring flowers weren't here when we first got here. I've managed to transform a very low maintenance yard into a high maintenance Wonderland!)

April, I got involved with gardening trying to keep a peace lily I received after my mother's death. I was determined not to lose it and it is still going strong...

When I moved here to SC from NC in 2001, my aunt (Bonnie) piqued my interest in gardening. I have learned a lot from her and have been at it by trial and error for while.

In 2004, I googled gardening and landed at a gardening forum. The information and people there were amazing! They took me under their wings and my plants thanked them for it...

Patty, I haven't seen wood hyacinths until now. Those things are absolutely gorgeous!

Last year I stumbled upon an annual flower that I fell in love with...

     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2006%2520plants%2FLisiantus_7-23.jpg&hash=7e97b6bf54edc99a84d98dd73009c4cf399461a9)
     Lisianthus

I know very little about the plant, but had read somewhere that in some areas it CAN come up again the following year. So, since we're (said to be) in a "microclimate" here, I mulched these plants real well when winter came & kept my fingers crossed.

Today I found NEW PLANTS poking up at the base of last year's stems! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fclap.gif&hash=d932508c024133b5e24f602199dff7129c6989a1)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FLisianthus3-10.jpg&hash=43abff43b655a82338ac99a35bd4bb1161d5cfa7)
I can't even begin to tell you how thrilled I am that I won't have to spend money on these again this year!

I'm told that Lisianthus seeds are microscopic ... & I believe it, cuz all I found inside the seed pods from last fall was powder! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyFit.gif&hash=044612bfa79d185df4913f1a66036c7423fe84d1) (But I'm going to plant that powder & see if anything happens!
Will let you know. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyOk.gif&hash=f7773c70aa8c89b6918998cf943ee9022cc2ce8a)

Patty, I love Lisianthus, too! Have you any of the pink or white ones? I am planning on buying each of the different colors when they come into the stores around here.

Powdered seeds, huh? I don't see why they wouldn't work. Some of the seeds that I have been starting are wee tiny litte things. I am going to have fun thinning them out, methinks...

Another name for the Lisiantus is Prairie Genetian. I learned that while working in the floral/produce department of a grocery store when I first moved to SC...

Prairie Genetian, eh? Thanx for mentioning that, Dianna... I might have more luck finding information on them now!

I understand that they do come in several colors, but I haven't seen any of the others yet. Right now I'm sticking with the purple ones, cuz I love, love, (LOVE) purple! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyHeartThrob.gif&hash=3c5c7b1e151fdee79c95904ea159f4a5da68fb84) Will keep my eye out for the others though. (Do the white ones stay white, or do they get "rust" marks on them after it rains?)

One of the things I especially like about Lisianthus is that they're great as cut flowers & will outlast most of the others in an arrangement!
(I brought home a blue ribbon from the county fair last year with this flower!)

Patty, all I have had so far are the purple, too. The white and pink colored ones that I have been in contact with were all at the floral department where I worked. It didn't rain inside except for the misting system on the vegetables.... ;D

Congratulations on the blue ribbon for a beautiful flower! Got pics?

White & pink Flowering Plum trees.

They are beautiful. Looks like the plum tree a neighbor in oregon had... and it most certainly made plums! It's branches draped over the driveway and the plums would leave a mess all over their car when they dropped/rotted...  but they wouldn't tri it back for anything!
Title: Re: Spring has sprung!

My folks used to have a plum tree (with plums on it) & the blossoms were identical to these! It was called a "Plum tree" & these are called "Flowering Plum trees"...(I guess that's supposed to define the difference.) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)? My Son & DIL have 1 of these in their yard & it produces cherry sized fruit... which taste like plums, but the pit takes up most of it! I want to can plums but don't want to spend 99¢  per pound for them, so I bought & planted a little Plum tree 3 years ago. Iit hasn't done anything yet, but maybe it will this year... And I'm hoping it wasn't mis-marked!

This weekend, BG & I found pieces of spring in the yard that weren't there last week! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileywoohoo.gif&hash=0f2676935af914f710cdef19ea634bd1c1c3691d)

The earliest to bloom & the last to admit when winter's here... Calendula.

    (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FPeriwinkle2.jpg&hash=b6901081dc9bfe3c0bfcaee507bf0e9f36adef41)
The lady bugs must have been having a convention around the first of the Periwinkle blossoms, on the slope above our Iris row. I planted these starts last summer, with the hope that they'd hold the soil on that end of the slope, cuz it started slipping during last spring's rain & tried to bury the Iris.  There are buds on all the other plants, so we should have an awesome looking hillside in another few days! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fclap.gif&hash=d932508c024133b5e24f602199dff7129c6989a1)

That plum tree is absolutely beautiful!  :) Like you, I don't like spending dollars on the plums. I told Jim a couple of weeks ago that I want a plum tree. I think I would need two, though, for pollination purposes, wouldn't I? If you don't have two, that may be why they haven't produced! Just a thought...

Well, if calendula is the first to bloom and the last to give into winter, I guess I will be looking for some of those to put in the dirt around here. They are gorgeous!

The periwinkle is fantastic, too! Is it holding the slope for you? That may be what we are needing to keep our creek bank from going swimming!

Keep those bloomers coming! They are all so pretty...

You would have to bring that up, Dianna! I've heard that both male & female apple trees are required to produce fruit, but I never even stopped to think about plum trees! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FOMGsmile.jpg&hash=f6625e07ec6b4dfc08d6f87fc9dbfb62b33bf974) Guess I'd better do my homework! Between my necessary errand running & the "scattered showers" (which seemed to pick MY yard to scatter in), I didn't get out in the gardens today, other than to prowl around with my camera.

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FViola3-20.jpg&hash=51d1cb78ac039b3c30afebaa3a55edeebda99e9e)
The Violas grow wild & are somewhat invasive, but I don't necessarily try to control them, as they add a little color at the base of our only tree (Ponderosa Pine), where nothing else wants to grow.

Those plums trees are beautiful. I planted some years back , but the deer ate the bark off them and they died.

I noticed today that a lot of things around here are blooming also. Seems like the dogwood trees flowered over night. The red and purple verbena are blooming, and the paulownia trees are starting to bloom also.

This year, the ladies in the Garden Club I belong to decided to break up into small groups & work in each others yards once a month, for 2 hours. While I'd much rather work in my own yard, it's nice to be a part of a co-op group like that, cuz when 4 gardeners get together, a lot gets done in a short time! Another nice thing about it is that we usually all bring something home from the other person's yard.

Today was our work day, & I got some Helleborus starts...
    (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FHelleborus.jpg&hash=290b80887e4b53b0d683ef90e17766e2850e5868)
They're also called "Lenten Rose"... probably because they bloom early in the spring. I just love these, cuz even though the flowers don't last all that long, the foliage stays all season, making a pretty olive green ground cover.

...And a Euphorbia (Purpurea - Purple Wood Spurge)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FEuphorbia.jpg&hash=c9d1049a43660bb62b3b9d4a2c8eb18408a691cb)
These plants are soooo cool! I looked them up & read (on anniesannuals.com) that it "starts out green in the Spring, with new growth looking like wine-colored blossoms. In late March throughout April, it bursts into a profusion of lime green flower heads. In Fall & Winter, the upper leaves & stems mature to a to-die-for deep purple-ruby. The following Spring, the leaves become green again. 30' tall & wide." (It also said that they self-seed!)

I planted it next to a "Burning bush", which I like, but it's in the wrong place in my yard, cuz it gets too big & blocks the view of our driveway, from the living room windows. If the Euphorbia likes it there, I plan to take the bush out this fall. My Garden Club friend said that originally, someone had given the plant to her & she tossed it over her garden fence after she thought it was dead, cuz she didn't get it planted right away... & it dug in, had babies, & now it's all over the place! I've decided that I want more (now), so I think I'll go back & dig some more up!
(And I understand that it's deer proof!) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fclap.gif&hash=d932508c024133b5e24f602199dff7129c6989a1)

I also got about a dozen Calendula plants, that we'll be putting into the planters at the church/school.

Thank you, Penny! Do you have anything trying to bloom now? Your snow has melted, hasn't it? Don't worry. Your bloomers will be showing before long! ;)

Tonya, you should be seeing some blooming going on, too! Your weather is quite a bit like ours...

April, what are you planting as a new gardener this year? Have you already started planting?

Look at all those vibrant colors!

When Jim walked in the door, he asked me if I noticed the new flowers. Since I didn't feel like hobbling out to look, he took the pictures for me. I can see why he noticed now!

Remember when I said somewhere last week that my little 3 year old Plum tree wasn't doing anything yet? It is now! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fclap.gif&hash=d932508c024133b5e24f602199dff7129c6989a1) (I just hope it doesn't turn out to be one of those ornamental trees, cuz I bought it so I could have plums.)

    (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FPlumPhlox4-1.jpg&hash=081f84fde2b90f860c57b13df49e9f3898ed8181)
And the Purple Phlox is waking up too, so spring has indeed spring here!

There's a lone white Iris across the driveway. & at first glance I thought it might be on our property...but it's not! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyFit.gif&hash=044612bfa79d185df4913f1a66036c7423fe84d1)

It's the only thing there besides the Periwinkle & the St. John's Wart (& the only white Iris in the whole neighborhood). I don't think that old woman could have gotten on the slope to plant it, so it may be a volunteer that simply osmosed there somehow (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)
...but I'm going to come right out & ask her if I can dig it up, instead of stealing it.

Every spring these little boogers go crazy. They break off and root where ever they fall. I have them growing in everything. I had an outdoor rug on part of the porch and they fell off and rooted on the carpet. They grow all year, but seem to really get a growing sprut when spring springs

Man, what awesome succulents you have going there, Bonnie! (Cute planters, too!)

Your awesome red flowers (and the white ones that you just snuck in here with while I was typing)...
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileySecret-1.gif&hash=ae682cbef30e6e7fbab45c3e0547c8e88ef58233)the rest of the world calls those "Amaryllis"!! ...I can't believe you can grow them outside! I think it's just too hot & dry here for that kind of plant to survive outdoors. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyFit.gif&hash=044612bfa79d185df4913f1a66036c7423fe84d1)

Dianna, I love those Iris! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileywoohoo.gif&hash=0f2676935af914f710cdef19ea634bd1c1c3691d) I have a bunch of lavender & white Tall Bearded Iris that look just like your yellow/white ones. The purple one looks like a Dutch Iris to me, but I haven't figured out what sorta animal that purple one is. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78) I'm going to do some snooping around & see if I can find out what that's called... I sure like the pleated/textured look of it. (Or are those actually stripes?)

OK, while I was typing, Dianna moved her garden gate post over here... I'd better stay focused & finish what I start, when I go to reply to a post, or I might find the topic closed by the time I get finished! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa201%2FPattySpencer%2FSmileyWedgie.gif&hash=5057895a2cbd2bcd58504a0225e354317034c949)

I love the looks of that gate & arbor!(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyOk.gif&hash=f7773c70aa8c89b6918998cf943ee9022cc2ce8a) I want an archway for some of the vines I'm trying out this year, but I'm too cheap to get that fancy. As soon as Keith gets me the lumber, I'm planning to build one myself.

I sure hope the amaryllis are still blooming this week-end. They are gorgeous!

Patty, you were told that I was going to move that topic on over to the Spring/Sprung! Why in the world do I deserve a wedgie for your being too slow about posting?? (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi20.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb203%2FDixieAngelsMom%2FGraphics%2FSmileys%2520Galore%2Fthsmilietapfoot.gif&hash=981104e3b1ae787a01ada2cb20907e41762a6284)

I think I would like to have an arbor with a bench built into it. We saw one at Big Lots here awhile back that would do the trick. By the time you get through paying for lumber and labor and all, Patty, you will have spent more than buying it out right....

I noticed a peach-looking tulip in the tulip bed today. I hope it opens soon so I can post a picture of it....

I think my blue and purple iris are of the Louisiana species. Guess I need to get them moved to the pond area when I am able to dig in the dirt again....

Okay, I'll admit it I can't spell. Those flowere are Amaryliss. They come back and multiply ever year. I love um. I don't think you could kill um if you wanted to.

Dianne and Jim gave me the garden gate. Nice ain't they.

Dianne, those yellow iris that you brought back to me are white. I haven't seen a yellow one yet.

Is it really a weed?  I must like weeds then, cuz I think it's pretty cool! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmiley_silly3.gif&hash=b430d44977b6e6df14db337a163337ac9c61e407) After the flowers die off, do they have seeds?  "a thick ground cover and spreads fast" sounds like something I need on the hill above my Iris, to help hold the soil!  So it only blossoms in the spring... what about the rest of the year?  Is the foliage thick & nice looking, or does it look more like a "weed"?  I'm wondering if it grows thick enough to choke out "normal" weeds & grasses. ???   (I'll bet you never thought anybody could ask so many questions about it!) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)

My California Poppy is up & running.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FCalPoppy4-15.jpg&hash=234052b53dc1062760dfc18d48a6a29a75c37e22)
This stuff drives me insane!  It's more of a weed here, cuz it throws a real long tap root that makes it nearly impossible to get rid of!  (I let it go in my Nigella bed cuz it goes so well with the pretty blue flowers, but here where this stand is, is the wrong place for them, cuz my annuals will be living there!) I'll let these go once & in a few weeks I'll get seeds from them for a few people who have asked, then they're coming out of there.  They'll be back again before the end of the growing season so I can fight them back again!

I really have to start taking notes when I move things, cuz I don't remember putting this Dutch Iris there! It was nice to see it finally open up, though.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FDutchIris.jpg&hash=35fe4d801d6016df46a3a938eb92e70d88405d16)

I went to my buddy, Betty's house today so LaRelle could wash windows for her, & she asked if I'd step out & "pull those stupid weeds" for her... the nut was talking about BUTTERCUPS! When I told her what they are, she decided to keep some, but the rest got moved... from her yard to mine! Ajuga reptans (Bugle Weed)is a beautiful little groundcover whether it is flowering or not. Aunt Bonnie gave me some to put in my front flowerbed. They did not like the full sun in that area. I moved it to under the deck in the back, facing North, and it is thriving. If it ever covers the full area, I won't have to go under there and pull "real" weeds.  ;)

I , also, planted some in Angel's little yard, but am thinking about moving it. It does attract bees and Angel gets in trouble with them. She likes to try to bite them... ::)

Whether it puts out seeds or not, I don't know. I just dig up patches at Aunt Bonnie's house to transplant to mine. Her beds need thinning out again. It is choking itself out. I will be looking out for seeds on them for you...

Oops!  If Bugleweed doesn't like full sun it would never make it in my yard, cuz I only have one place that gets any shade, & that's where I moved my Hydrangeas last year.

About that arbor, Dianna...

By the time you get through paying for lumber and labor and all, Patty, you will have spent more than buying it out right....

WRONG! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fneener.gif&hash=9b4f7fdd949e647abd6dd02fd912486a0960b63b)I finally got the boards painted & Keith pitched right in & helped put my arbor together today! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileywoohoo.gif&hash=0f2676935af914f710cdef19ea634bd1c1c3691d)

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FArbor4-22.jpg&hash=89f453849d23e6533c060f81226c96c4f02b271a)
It was lots cheaper than I could have bought it for, & didn't take much spare time to cut & paint the wood before we put it together.  I only spent $3.67 (each) for the four 2X3's, & we had scraps of cedar boards out behind the garden shed, waiting to be turned into something. I told you it wasn't gunna be fancy... if I have my way, it'll be all covered up with vines this summer, so nobody will be able to see it anyway!

Now I can get my vine starts in the ground at the base of it... & I discovered the other day that the Passion Flower vines I planted last year actually took root, & they're ready to roll!  (They were hiding behind all those nuisance California Poppies.)

The arbor turned out VERY NICE, Patty - great job!!!
Can't wait to see it all planted up - passionflower sounds like a good one to put there.  Which color flower did you plant?  I have the white one.

What is that blazing yellow plant in the foreground of the picture?
It's so bright and yellow!

Thanxs, Lynne!  It really wasn't all that hard to throw together. The hard part was waiting for the weather to get warm enough last week to go out in the garage & paint the boards !

My passion Flower is the white one also... with the purple in it somewhere... it's been so long since I saw the flower, I can't remember right now where the different colors are, but I know there's purple in it!

The "blazing yellow plant" is our Globe Arborvitae.
        (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FArborVitae-4-22.jpg&hash=341db210922d4e96519eeff858e03f0196f21187)
This is actually a better shot of the arbor! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fgrinnnn.gif&hash=8053e265bbbdfaa9027c8bf23e21fe4a5d794a81) I had to stand on a few California Poppies to get this shot.  (It's getting dark here, & the sun is throwing some pretty shadows on the hills across town.  Cool, huh?) WOWZERS Patty - what a GORGEOUS view you have there!!!

Your arbor really is fantastic!  And I like the coloration of that Arborvitae - I've never seen one like that!  Though I can't grow them here with the deer, so I really haven't paid too much attention to them lately.  I'm so glad you shared these pictures with us - can't wait to see more!

Keith told me that a doe just marched through under the arbor, so I popped out to see if I could get a pic... but she had already bounded down the slope into the field. I took another pic of the Arborvitae instead, cuz I didn't think the last one was a very good shot of the bush itself... (I was more impressed with the shadows I captured on those hills, so I'm going to leave it there!)

This one does the bush more justice...
      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FGlobeArborVitae4-22.jpg&hash=7515a37816e0237053d5228ee34fdfd071105efa)
The little dots of purple at its base is a patch of Sunscape Daisies (Osteospermum) that were sheltered by that bush when our weather got so cold this winter, & the yellow flowers on the slope below the bush is a clump of "basket of Gold" (AuriniaSaxatilis).

BTW, I've NEVER had a problem with the deer around that Arborvitae! If I'm not mistaken, I think those are a type of Cedar. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78) I can't imagine a deer wanting to eat that!

At the corner of the house, to the right of the arbor, is Keith's Rhododendron. (I hate that bush!) It just started to flower up this weekend.
      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FRhodie4-22.jpg&hash=a07c7910bb4e7e4731a39f6c11958cd7d7fc475e)
Give it another week & it'll be loaded with flowers & look like one giant bouquet!
(And I'm not cleaning up under it this year! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa201%2FPattySpencer%2FsmileyNo.gif&hash=3ebe2a601d2bdcb3a85efc34404b1319ee97d485) What a MESS!)

While I was cruising the yard with the camera this afternoon, I spotted my first rose bud of the year!
      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2F1stRose_4-22.jpg&hash=97773047d14405ad6aa056020ea76fa9ee71b521)
I have no idea why this rose is red... that bush has always put out pink roses! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FScratchHead.gif&hash=17a83761a3ec3e2d5035b2d70c4ad35baa8fb2f9) (I'd love it if they were red this year, but I think I'd be freaked out if it did that!)

I was hoping my Iris would wait another week, so the whole row would be in bloom when Shelly & Lil' Naomi get here, a few days before Mother's Day, but down by the field they're starting to open already!  (Hopefully, they wont be all done by then.)
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2F1stAmClassic4-22.jpg&hash=195ed0232629659005b83a9e982b2e23e82de119)

Way around the corner, past what I call my 70' Iris row (where the slope turns into an out-&-out hill... too steep for a sane person to navigate with a camera in hand), some of them are already in full bloom!
      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2F2Iris4-22.jpg&hash=93d21342ac4a579950185409296f52d59706607e)

I've noticed that some colors open up sooner than others.  The slower ones aren't far behind though, so there will be several days when they're all in full bloom at the same time.
(That's the time for the REAL pictures!) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FYahoo.gif&hash=11ee556e0be66563b3fec3544c60abd34df4bbba)

You sure have a yard full of pretty bloomers. That golden bush is something else, too. I love all the different colors that you have going on in your yard...

I love the view beyond your yard, also!  :)

Well, spring has finally sprung here, :) and I hope it's here to stay!  When I went outside today I really got a very pleasant surprise because one of my tangerine and white Daffodils has a double bloom on a single stem.  I took the picture to the nursery where I bought the bulbs and the lady there told me she had never seen one produce a double bloom before, she wants me to e-mail the picture to her.  Geesh, I thought this was pretty exciting!  Here's a picture of it!

I've been trying to avoid looking at my lilac when I go through the back yard, cuz it's Shelly's favorite flower & she had originally wanted to schedule her visit for when they'd be in bloom.  I told her that last year I took my lilac pic on April 28. so we figured that since winter lasted longer than usual, they might be blooming later this year.  She scheduled her trip so she could be with my Mom for her 85th birthday on May 2nd, then here on Mothers Day, thinking that she would probably still see the lilacs.

As I was rolling up the hose & putting garden tools away a little bit ago, I got a whiff of the most awesome scent & realized that I couldn't deny that my lilac is in full bloom, any longer!

        (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FLilac4-23.jpg&hash=891cbc8f9c1301287f4b0548284ceb5683b2d308)
Shelly is undoubtedly going to get here too late to enjoy them, so I snapped this pic & e-mailed it to her.  Will have to go find some lilac scented shampoo for her, or something!
Are y'all tired of my flowers yet? (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FInnocentRH.gif&hash=5dd02ca79e7d4f2af74bd4005695e4547ccf227c)  There's a whole summer ahead, & my yard is just getting started!!

Patti, what a pretty daffodil. I love that color and you got a bonus bloom with it! I, also, like that bleeding heart... :)

Patty, I have always thought of lilacs as a little mounding bush. That thing is humongous!  :o  And I am wondering, did you bring that rose bud into the house and put it in a vase? I wouldn't have been able to keep from doing that...
Title: Re: Spring has sprung!

Patti, that Bleeding Heart is awesome! Is that in your shade garden, or does it like full sun? (I'm sure glad you finally got your camera program working!  You & Tina have the most awesome flowers in your yards, & I wanna see more!)

Dianna, I think that most people keep their Lilacs trimmed so they grow more like hedge bushes.  This one was like this when we moved in... & the roses were "trees" too, cuz the people before us apparently knew less than I do about flower gardening & had obviously never pruned anything!  I hate this Lilac being so darned tall & lanky like that, & it's a good thing that I didn't find out until September that they should be pruned right after the blooms die back (just like Azaleas & Rhodies), cuz I was ready to whack it all down!  It wouldn't have bloomed much (if at all) this year, had I done that, & Shelly would never have forgiven me if she came & couldn't see Lilacs! (I just hope the flowers are still there when she gets here!) There are plenty of suckers coming up at the base, so I hope to have a hedge-size Lilac bush next year!

I thought about it, but didn't get that first rose picked until it was all the way open... too late to enjoy it inside my flower aquarium, but I'll catch the next one.  I noticed today that my climbing rose is blooming way up at the top, but I didn't want to have to haul the ladder from the garage to take a pic.  It looks like the lower ones are thinking about opening up, so I'll snap a shot of them when they do.

Patty, this Bleeding Heart is in my shade garden, but the other one is in the bed on the side of the house.  They like shade to partial-shade, so the other one gets some morning sun.  My white one got zapped by the freeze this year.  It's still living, but I don't think it's going to bloom this year.  All my flowers are so confused, they don't know what season it is or what they're  supposed to do.   ???

Here's a picture of one of my Clematis, but I'm not sure which one it is becuase my squirrels dug up all my tags.  I thought it was Dr. Ruppell, but the tips of the flowers on this one are rounded instead of pointed, so right now it's a mystery plant.  I bought it because it was pink and just put it in late last year, so this is actually the first year it has bloomed.  I hope I can find out what it's name is because the flowers are beautiful and such an awesome shade of pink.   ;)

I guess Bleeding Hearts wouldn't work here unless I put them in a hanging basket on my front porch, where they'd get early morning sun, & shade the rest of the day.

I just love looking at your Clematis, Patti. I have no idea what mine will do this year, cuz I'm not sure if the ones I have are supposed to be in sun or partial shade or total shade... I lost the tags long ago!

I sure like my Chives though, & wish it would keep its blossoms longer....

Oh, Patty, I love your chives and I would plant them just for the flowers.  I don't know of any Clematis that tolerates shade.  I know some will do okay in dappled shade, but not total shade.  Geesh, your Columbine looks a lot like mine which started blooming yesterday and here's a picture of it today.

Wow, it was a beautiful day here and we broke a record with 92 degrees.  In 1946, there was a high of 90 degrees.  Geesh, I can't believe we had freezing temperatures a few weeks ago.  The weather has been really crazy the past couple of years and now the honey bees are disappearing!   ???

Big surprise today, here is my first rose.  This is my pink miniature rose and I thought for sure I lost it to the freeze because all the leaves dropped off and it looked like it had died. I can't believe it have new leaves and is blooming.   :o

Patti, I don't have a clematis yet. Patty sent me some seeds, though, so I should soon. I just googled for pink clematis and looked at the pictures and found one that looked like yours....

I love that geranium and that dianthus you have...

Thanks, Dianna, I really love the hardy Geraniums and Dianthus.  I have several different varieties of each of them.  Actually, I just got some of the 'Neon Star' Dianthus this year and they are an awesome plant.  I love the foliage on them.  ;)  Of course, the fragrance gets me every time and I can't resist them.   :)

There is a little table type "plant stand" on my front porch that Dave made for me. (It wasn't originally supposed to be for plants but it's a long insignificant story, so I won't tell it!) When I come back from shopping with an armload, I need something by the door to put stuff on until I get the door open... but every time I turn around, my daughter has moved it to the garage or the back yard cuz she thinks it's an eyesore!  So, yesterday I bought a couple Begonias to put in the pot that he built into the table, & I'm hoping she'll leave it where it is now!

      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FBegonias5-7.jpg&hash=c594ff1961a7c44d88ad0a5a1b835ebd8fce7f4e)
The tag says they like shade... which may or may not be true, cuz I bought them at Walmart! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)

I didn't get out to take pics of flowers while my pint-sized "company" was here, but another Azalea bloomed & my Dutch Iris opened up while I was distracted!  The Azalea is on its way out now, but you can see the darker pink blossoms that haven't been bleached out by the sun.

     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FAzal-DutchIris5-16.jpg&hash=dbdb25b6c00d17d4d982537ea044bbe7de3d7855)

Patti, is your Dianthus the same flower as the one in my "Looks familiar" post in the mystery plant forum? The leaves don't look the same at all! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78) Mine has filled out a lot better now, but it's not that full!

I sure like the color of yours better than mine... what are you doing with all those purple flowers, while I have pink?!  I thought that you try to aim for all pink in your gardens!

I really wish I had a better camera, cuz this doesn't do my first Nigella of the year any justice at all! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyDisgust.gif&hash=af8064275063bec54fd55940c20c9ee3953cb4b9)
Here it is anyway!

I have no idea why, but Nigella is my favorite flower of all time... & it doesn't even have a smell to it!
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fnutz.gif&hash=2f09884e8ec162bd66fab282d2da206d559a99fa)

I noticed today that while I was busy last week with my company, the California Poppies started to pod up. It has always amazed me how long some of the pods turn out, from such dainty little flowers!
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FS5000444.jpg&hash=e31310305045c4eea4dc5acec271509fd2b04370)

A few people have asked me for seeds, so I let this patch grow longer than I usually do.

I think Lynne & Patti wanted seeds from these, & if anyone else does, speak up now (or PM me), cuz they're all getting pulled out next week so I can plant my annuals. (The seed pods will be ready & starting to pop open by then)

Title: Springing Sprung in mother nature....
Post by: Peggy on May 18, 2007, 11:55:13 PM
You know, we went out exploring this past weekend...
Well, let me back up... the part of Oregon that Patty and I live on is full of BLM
land.  That is Bureau of Land Management.  These are public lands that is mostly used for logging, but we, Mr. & Ms. Public are allowed to go out, explore, camp, target shoot, get fire wood (with proper permits), gold pan, look for ghost towns, etc.

Clyde and I spend a lot of time out on these lands because it's free entertainment...
this past weekend we were looking for him a new creek to high bank for gold on. While he does his thing, I take photos.

I am not a pro photographer, but I'd love to be. And to get back onto topic, Spring is my favorite time of year to take photos.  I love new vegetation, and pretty new flowers, etc.  I took a few photos this weekend, as is my habit when we go out pretending like we are mountain goats...

hope you enjoy mother nature's spring...

Wow Peggy, I want you to come over here with your camera, so I can have some decent pics of my flowers! I really enjoyed these pics when you e-mailed them to me, & I'm glad you posted them here! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FThumbUp.gif&hash=2798ff990d776508bcad79304cd581667242df5b)

Are your California Poppies really that orange, or is it just the lighting? (Or maybe my monitor!)

I dont know what that first flower is... is it on a vine, or how tall is it?

The purple & white Iris is called "American Classic" but I dont know the names of the others.  I'm soooo tickled that you ended up with a variety of colors, like we were hoping you would!

Your Lilies are gorgeous!  I wonder why yours are bloomed already, just 20 miles away from me, when mine are just starting to bud up! Hey guys, am I the only one who's not on vacation, or are your cameras broken?  While Memorial Day is only the unofficial opening day of the summer season, I know that summer flowers are coming up all over, so lets get this thread filled up so we can move to a summer garden topic!

The Honeysuckle that I bought a few weeks ago is blooming already! The guy I bought it from said it would get 6 feet tall this summer, but it's not even 2 feet tall yet!
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FHoneysuckle_5-24.jpg&hash=fed3354af9e1f86c1817bdb512acf4ef1221c87e)
If I keep the flowers picked off, will that make it use its energy to get taller? (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)

It's called Pink Lemonade.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FHoneysuckle5-24.jpg&hash=30ad5b7ce67c2d4c1c92af59ca736c2c3aa919cd)

My roses took long enough to get started this year, but a couple of them are really going great guns now!
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FRoseWest5-24.jpg&hash=e0da6d2544adbed0dacf93d869e212a012d7d5e0)

I don't know the names of any of my roses... I just call these the pink ones!  (Of all my roses, they're the only ones that smell.)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FPinkRoses5-24-07.jpg&hash=0e77410eab746f3a70a3712683b45a42fe615c1d)

The red climber is on the South side of the house & doesn't get the attention that my others do, cuz the thorns are tiny & abundant & I don't like dead-heading it. I thought I got rid of  this darned thing a couple years ago when I took out the woody base of it (not knowing at the time that it's next to impossible to kill a rose bush), but it came right back up, bigger & showier than it ever had been!
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FSouthClimbers-CalPoppy5-24.jpg&hash=cb5936684b16f792d59725bdd9dbe0e390668ac9)
The California Poppies have taken over the entire bed under that rose, but are coming out very soon, so I can plant my annuals there.  Meanwhile, I sort of like the color contrast!

Wonderful flowers everyone!!!

Patty - I have a honeysuckle that looks exactly like that one - the hummingbirds love it!  But mine has a different name - lonicera heckrotti - Goldflame.

I sent Patti some cuttings last summer and am wondering how they are doing?
Youuuuuuuuuuuuuu Whoooooooooooooooooooo... Patti - long time no see?

Mine does look a bit pinker here in this pic from last year...
but it really does have the yellow like yours, in person...

Title: Re: Spring has sprung!

Lynne, I have no doubt that our Honeysuckle also has a couple hundred other names!  I guess that if people don't know the right name, they just make them up! "Lonicera heckrotti" might be the real name, cuz it looks more "botanical", & nobody can pronounce it! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)

The poor excuse for a camera that I've been using, finally bit the dust, so I went & bought a new one today.  (We'll see how long I can make this one last!) I haven't figured out the buttons on this one either, but maybe I won't have to, cuz my first shots turned out pretty good!

This is a better pic of my Nigella (Love in the Mist) than the one I put on the last page here...
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FNigellaBlue5-26.jpg&hash=63eef9963aaaacee83210c40ecc893c0769481ae)

And here's the white one. (These are both "doubles". The "singles" have just one layer of petals.)
    (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FNigellaWhite5-26.jpg&hash=25eb55285e0c7d307b46c2e58cd5b4c50081f80d)
I want to take a longer shot of this hill above the Iris, so you can see how pretty this section is, with the Poppies scattered among the blue spots. (There are less of the white ones. They're pretty, but I'm glad they come out like this, with the blue predominant.)  I'd just love it if the whole field were covered with these... but I'm not about to weed those 6 acres!
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FNigella2_5-26.jpg&hash=7299c309a925a6404441ef65fccd5eab894529c9)
California Poppies close up when the sun starts going down, so they're not as showy here.  I hope this camera takes better pics during the day than the other one did.  I got used to taking pics in the evening, cuz  the colors were better & not over exposed.

Trent is always picking the flowers off of Aunt Bonnie's honeysuckle. Wonder if that is what causes it to grow so abundantly? Her little "wedding house" is loaded with the red...

...one of my tangerine and white Daffodils has a double bloom on a single stem.
I was deadheading roses this morning, & spotted a Siamese twin rose! ...one with two blossoms coming out of the same hip! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fshock.gif&hash=9fff64dcf2ff5dfdad0e0e7c56d1770fe44911e6) I dont think I've ever seen any flower do that!

Here it is from the front... just looks like 2 roses, close together.

From the back side, you can see how the hip divided in half, to form both blossoms.

Patty, you say that roses are almost impossible to kill? I sure hope so. I bought one (Helen Hayes - yellow) to put in my mother's memorial garden and it is still in the pot. I need to get my foot well so I can get it in the ground....

Dianna, I think that the only way you can kill a rose is by not watering it. (Just remember to give it plant food.)  I've had a purple ("Sterling Silver") rose bush in a container for a few years now, & it's perfectly happy!

I'd rather have it in the ground, but I keep being promised a new deck, (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyIMWaiting.gif&hash=4a876fff2ffb4fe8d68dcc4bcc41fe6649d8b744) so I need to wait until that's done before I'll know where it can be planted!

I took the Blackeyed Susan bowl off the top of the arbor last week & replanted them at its base, cuz the vines wanted to climb up instead of draping down the sides.  Apparently I didn't shock them too bad, cuz they're a lot happier down there & are growing the way they want to now!  (The honeysuckle is still there too, but it had better get a move on!)
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FArborBESusan6-2.jpg&hash=3724c94222e966b271fa41ce5ae1ac503d04a7b9)

I usually only plant my Nigella in the bed I'd designated for them above the Iris hill, but last year I tried to save the seeds from the white ones separately from the blue. I planted a little patch of them in a bed in the back yard, just to see if they'd come out "true" (which I really didn't expect...
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FWhiteNigella6-1.jpg&hash=8cc9765942075e71b5f256ff1586ad06d42ef485)
...but they did!) I have no idea if I'll be able to do that again... I think I was just lucky this time!

I should think that people are getting tired of seeing pics of my Nigella, but since it's my favorite flower, I just keep taking more pics! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Flala.gif&hash=ce2fd216b304c2ae3325052bb0225d80ddf0c932)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FNigella6-2.jpg&hash=7ac6a581ca38e4fb4fbaf2dee28cf64f604c5f1d)

While we're waiting for the other annual seeds to sprout, the Dianthus that I bought as bedding plants wait patiently, in front of the Sweet Wiliam that I moved to rescue it from the deck project.
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FDianthus6-1.jpg&hash=04f03e3532e0f47e8ae9c953bd4cb0ea03f0e117)

Come on, folks!  Where are your flower pics?! I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who's doing any gardening this year!  :Crybaby:

Beautiful, Peggy! I didn't get any Tulips this year... I think that with all the switching around of things in my garden beds I've done this year, I may have moved them or dug them in deeper, without knowing it! :SlapSelf:

It's raining today so I didn't get anything done in the yard, but I did go out & snap some pics, between showers.

This is a lone Calendula that I think BG planted on the slope above the Iris hill. It's so perfect (probably cuz it's not crowded, like I plant things) that this will be a good pic for a seed packet! These are draught tolerant & do real well in any type of soil.  This one is in plain ol' unamended clay.
          (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FCalendul6-9.jpg&hash=af8f67dcc1240f57c3d2255a975b505615308e02)

The large pink roses next to the driveway are opening up now, after having been pruned almost out of existence.  They were way too tall for my liking last year, but they're zooming back up to almost the same height, so I think all the pruning did was to slow down the flowers!
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FRose_NE6-9.jpg&hash=37b293551b11af5e7e794269c61eae6d8a013f52)

Right next to that rose is a huge Hydrangea.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FHydrangea6-9.jpg&hash=612f39b657ed3afafdff5953e0895551a40ae9a0)
I have a few other small ones from another big plant like this that I divided & moved last spring, & they're starting to bud now. They didn't put out flowers for me last year cuz I think I moved them too late. (Peg, the one I gave you might do you the same way... I can't remember if I asked you whether or not it looks like it's going to bloom this year. If I'd have thought about it when you came & got the Iris last year, it probably would be flowering now, for sure.)  (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa201%2FPattySpencer%2FSmileyKickMe.gif&hash=3104bb7d50d9b98b04ca3ade735c793ccecd63f5)

The Passion vines on my arbor are up & starting to go over the top now, but it hasn't put out any flowers yet.  Amy has wanted Passion Flowers for just as long as I have, & I mentioned that to Peggy last week.  She stopped by on Friday with some vines that she had dug out for Amy... & they already have flowers on them!

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FPassionFlwr1.jpg&hash=25672153f361eaa44c6969aefb999f540e132c3e)

These are from the same stand that mine are from, so mine are going to look like this too!  Wish they'd hurry up!

Today will be the last day to post in this topic as tomorrow is the first day of Summer.  It will still be available to refer to, we will just put a lock on it and maybe someone will start one for Summer.

Dianna, the Four O'clock seeds that you & Bonnie sent me had sprouted several weeks ago & the plants are getting bigger every day! I hope they'll make flowers for me this year, cuz I just love yours!

Since it's not officially "Summer" on the West coast yet, I'm going to sneak the last post in on this thread! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fgrinnnn.gif&hash=8053e265bbbdfaa9027c8bf23e21fe4a5d794a81)

This was the view of my Lily bed from our front window yesterday.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FLilyBed6-19.jpg&hash=c61ce131e20289dd620194954e18d490fef83bf9)

There is another Calla (yellow) & 1 other Asiatic (white) that haven't opened up yet, & 3 other types of Lilies  waiting to blossom... sure wish they'd do it all at once! Patty, wait until you smell the scent of the Four O'Clocks! You will love them even more...

You reminded me that I, too, have planted some Calla lilies. I haven't seen petal nor stem of them in my garden bed, though.  :Watching:

Actually Summer doesn't officially start here until 2:06 PM so get those late spring bloomers in here before the topic is closed.

We got her a birthday topic going too.  Thanks for telling us, cause she hasn't filled in that portion of her profile.

Summer is here so this topic is done.  Thanks to everyone for all the pretty pics.  I believe Patty has already started a Summer topic.  :applause:
