Title: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Jan 09, 2010, 05:47:32 PM
I'm going to think about those book shelves.  Especially the ones that look like cubes.  I wonder if they could be stacked.  That would be the perfect answer wouldn't it?

I have to start cataloging my books but today was a total bust.  I just couldn't talk myself into it.  Hopefully I'll do better tomorrow.

Right now I'm reading book two of the magisters series, Wings of Wrath by C.S. Friedman.  I won't bother to read the third one in the series because the author is at it again.  We bounce from one character to another and I just don't like that story telling technique.

But after that I'm looking forward to some good ones.  Got my fingers and toes crossed.

Well I got a "no tool required for assemble" 5 tier bookshelf and I'm loving it.  Only 20 bucks and it went together like a dream.

If I ever get through the "Wings of Wrath" I'll never ever pick up another book by C.S. Friedman.  I hardly ever put down a book in the middle because then the story will haunt me.  So I have to finish the really bad ones or they hang around in my head.  But picking this one up and reading it isn't any fun at all.

Tammy, I am the same way about having to read to the end. It is aggravating when it really is a "bad" book and it stays that way to the finish... :razberry:

I'm nearing the end and it hasn't improved if anything it has gotten worse.  I've occassionally gotten into fixes where I've tried to write a report and it got convoluted and messy.  This is the first time I've run into it in book form.  Probably because I stay away from Russian writers.  Oops sorry shouldn't have said that.

I just read a memoir called Rattled.  I liked it.  And now I am reading one called It Sucked and Then I Cried.  This girl has my kind of sense of humor (I don't know that I should say it is my kind of sense of humor, but I enjoy her sense of humor).  I am enjoying it so far.

Sounds like those are good books, Jessica. I like books that have humor in them...

Tammy, soon you will be through with it and can start on something else... :grinnnn:

When I met G-mom a couple of years ago, she told me that "Memoirs of a Geisha" is a very good book. :wink5: I haven't spotted it in a thrift store, so I haven't read it yet... :giggle:

It is a wonderful book.  It's in my library and I read it last year.  I hope to find a copy for my library because I know I would enjoy reading it again.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a good book but sad.  It's unbelievable that people are treated that way.

Jessica, I'm going to check those out if I can find them.

Jessica, who is the author of Rattled?  There are 2 books I found with that title.   One by Christine Coppa, that my library doesn't have, and one by Debra Gallant, that my library does have.

The one I read is by Christine Coppa.  I liked it.

I did not.  I bought them.  I am so bad about going to the library.  I buy a lot of the books that I read.  I would be willing to share them with you if you can't find them.

I went to the library to get rid of that awful book that I was reading.  Then I picked up two on quilting.  "Fusing Fun! Fast Fearless Art Quilts" by Laura Wasilowski and "Quilting School" by Ann Poe.

The first one is only 80 pages and I'm already on page 17 so it's going pretty quickly.  It's definitely boosting my confidence concerning where I want to head with the quilting.  Which is a good thing.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Jan 20, 2010, 10:40:13 AM
Finished Fusing Fun and I'm very excited about the Art Quilts but I've decided that I'm going to take my time and go through all the lessons and slowly build up to the art quilts.  It's two to three times the amount of material and so I want to be sure that I'm spot on when I get there.  Next on my reading list is Quilting School.  This is one of those I'll be taking notes as I go along.

Well I had to stop along the way and begin "Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs," by Barbara Mertz.  So far I've giggled and laughed about every page.  I'm going to love reading this one.  It's non-fiction and it's about egyptology and the more about egyptology & Ms. Mertz you know the funnier the book is.  I won't put aside the Quilting book I'll just read about a lessons worth each day and then go on to other things.

I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale.  Very good.

Post by: duh on Feb 20, 2010, 12:57:05 PM
I just finished "4000 Flower & Plant Motifs: A Source Book", It's all pictures so it was just a matter of marking the pages I want to copy at the library the next time I go.  That will be Tuesday for the quilting club.  If I get there at 9:00 I'll be able to copy the pages before we go to Lynchburg.  That's my plan anyway.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Mar 01, 2010, 04:09:30 PM
Well my plan fell through but I should be able to get the copies the Tuesday after next if not before.

Well while I was in Lynchburg I stopped by my favorite used book store.  I now have 6 Mercedes Lackey books.  Winds of Change, Winds of Fate, The White Gryphon, The Phoenix Trasnformed , The Phoenix Endangered, and Music to my sorrow.  She has over 100 books published and I hope that before I die I'll have collected the entire set.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: bestofour on Mar 01, 2010, 06:28:47 PM
I never read any Mercedes Lackey books but I remember reading that she says she bases some of her stories on her life.  From what I know about her books her life must be unusual to say the least.

Have you ever read 84 Charing Cross Road?  It's a tiny book that I'm reading now.  It's about a woman living in NY in the 1940's who orders her books from an old bookstore in England because she likes their paper and book coverings better.  I am loving this little book.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Mar 08, 2010, 02:38:59 PM
That sounds like a book right down my alley.  I'll have to look for it.  Thanks for the heads up.

I think the ones based on some of Mercedes life are the ones about the elves that are race car drivers.  It's probably been 20 years since I read those but they are good.

I just finished up a pretty good book called Sullivan's Island by Dorothea Benton Frank.  It is about a woman who changed her life after a divorce and the author goes back and forth between her current life and when she was a child.  Not the best book I have ever read but a pretty good message.

I just ordered The Surrendered by Chang-rae Lee from the library.  They'll hold it once it finally gets in.  SOunds interesting.  He's got another book, Aloft, that I'm hoping to get tomorrow.

I am on the 4th book in a series by Jennifer Chiaverini.  The Series is Elm Creek Quilts.  All of the books talk about quilting and revolve around a quilting camp and they are just all great reads.  I am really enjoying this series.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Mar 14, 2010, 12:54:53 PM
That sounds like a great series.

I checked out "The Art of Egypt".  I think it must have been someones doctorate.  Not a good read or even particularly informative.  He beats a few points to death and then comes around and walks all over them again.  It's a real yawn.

On the other hand "The Ultimate Garden Designer has got me chomping on the bit to get out there and really go to work on the garden.  There is so much I want to do out there but I'm lucky if I can keep ahead of the weeds.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol 2
Post by: duh on Mar 23, 2010, 03:08:39 PM
The Ultimate Garden Designer" had to go back to the library.  But before I turned it in I copied the 4 pages that had the 4 seasons garden directions.  Those are going up on my planning wall.  I'll take a picture of that someday and post it.  I love it.  It's all my inspirations and ideas.

I really should love the Director of the Country Library system.  The way she is getting rid of books I'm going to end up with the greatest library around.  Today I netted:

Photography in focus: a basic text, by mark Jacobs and Ken kokrda.  A book we all know I need desperately.

The Doonesbury Chronicles, by G.B. Trudeau.  Is there anyone my age or older who would pass up this classic comic strip?

"A social history of furniture design from B.C. 1300 to A.D. 1960" by John Gloag."  Ok anything about an art or a craft and i just have to have it.  Call it an addiction.  I have a lot of those.

"The Magnificent West:  Yosemite," by Milton Goldstein.  One look at the pictures in this book and you know why I had to have it.

"Art on Site: Country artwalks from maine to maryland," by Marina Harrison & Lucy D. Rosenfeld.  On the front cover it says "Discover Sculpture gardens, environmental and Architectural Gems, Painters' Landscapes and Art and Craft in Process."  Am I going to pass that up?  Of course not lol.

"Keyboard Musicians of the World," by Young.  Now I'll admit that as a pianist I was an absolute washout.  But it did leave me with a fine appreciation for those who could accomplish what I could not.  So this book just had to come home with me.

"Pack-o-fun treasure of crafts, gifts, and toys," by Edna and John Clapper.  I could have passed this one up but a full bag of books for only .50.  In the bag it went.  [good thing I bought that book on repairing book bindings.]

"Sophocles the Theban Plays:  King Oedipus, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone"  Translated by E.F. Watling.  Who am I to by pass a classic.  Just because I didn't get a classical education and find wading through the classics a great deal of work with little reward doesn't mean I don't try it from time to time.

"Shoal of Time: A History of the Hawaiian Islands,"  by Gavan Daws.  I visited hawaii once.  My fingernails are still embedded in the airports wall.  I really did not want to leave.  So you know this one came home with me.

"101 Masterpieces of Music and their composers," by Martin Bookspan.  A book that helps me to appreciate music is a fine thing indeed so this book has been added to my growing collection.

Glad it was only .50 for all of them.  With only 19.00 dollars to last me until payday peanut butter and jelly is comming close to becomming a staple lol.

I'm such a nut.  One of the books I bought at Books on the Ave, my local used book store, is about cross stitch patterns.  Now if I want to use any of the patterns I"ll have to translate them to some other technique.  Where do my brains go?

Well I've finished Winds of Fate adn Winds of Change now I just need to get my hands of Winds of Fury and I'll have completed the series done by Mercedes Lackey.  There are tons more that follow the time line from beginning to end but they are usually done in three book increments.  I loved reading them.

Then I started one of her modern elf books.  I can't think of the name right now but I'll get it and post it later.  I'm headed for a nap.

I'm getting disappointed with the information I saved from "The Ultimate Garden Designer" that I read earlier this year.  So far 4 of the 4 plants I've checked out from there 4 seasons garden list I wouldn't have in my garden.  One is zone 9 10, one is very agressive, one requires a great deal of water, and one is toxic.  Not the kinds of plants I want in a garden.  Ok whinning over for right now.

I have not read Cold Mountain but I did see the movie.  Maybe I will have to read the book now.  Right now I am reading 3 Weeks With My Brother by Nicholas Sparks.

Bonnie, I read plenty of those books myself.  Less and less though as Tristen is old enough to read himself.  I think it helps kids to enjoy and think about reading when they see mom and dad reading.  PS....mom reads way more than dad. :giggle:

Finished A Can of Peas and then read Dandelions in a Jelly Jar.  Now I am reading Aprons on a Clothesline.  I didn't realize these books were a series until I started reading but Aprons on a Clothesline is the final one in the series.  I have enjoyed them.  They are pretty true to how life is living here.  The author lives here and she wrote them loosely based on our town.

I'm reading  Olive Kitteridge.  It's about  a retired school teacher and unofficial town crier in a small coastal town in Maine.  I just started it but so far it's good.

I read about 1/2 of the Edgar book and liked it then it got not so good so I stopped.  Maybe I'll pick it back up later.

I finished Aprons on a Clothesline.  It was good.  I am still unsure of the ending though.  It left a lot to be desired.  Supposedly it was the last book in the series.  Maybe she will come out with another.  After following the same characters through 3 books I was sad to see it come to an end.  I will have to look through my collection tonight to see what looks good to read next.

I just finished The complete Guide to Kitchen Design with Cooking in Mind by Donald Silvers.  It had a lot of helpful information in it instead of the usual "like, totally, I like the farmhouse sink with, like, I dunno, maybe yellow paint.  This is so, totally, hard." that is in a lot of design books.  This one had awesome info on cabinets, like height, width, differences between modular, custom modular, custom, and custom millwork, etc.  It was pretty sweet.  And the guy is a cook, so it had a lot of recommendations for where to put stuff if you actually plan on cooking in your kitchen.

Now that sounds like the kind of remodeling book I'd like to get my hands on.  I'll have to see if it is in our local library system.  I'm headed there today so I'm in great shape to check.  I'm in the mood to check out the entire library lol.  So times I come home with so many books I feel like I've been greedy.

While I was at the library I put in a request for the kitchen remodel book.  it will cost me a dollar if its in the library system we are a part of but I figured it was worth it.

It's a good book, Tammy.  It didn't yack about the fluff - like colors, etc.  Just the good stuff!

Thanks for recommending it.  The librarian said it will be between 3 and 8 weeks for it to arrive if they have it.  But I'll definitely enjoy reading it.  I'm always looking for ideas to make my galley kitchen into a dream kitchen.

Been re-reading the Dragonriders of Pern series by the McCaffrey's... quick reads and an enjoyable series.

have you read Todd McCaffrey's books in the Pern Series?  I've read about half of them.  They aren't his mothers but they aren't bad.

Yes, I have as I am reading them in chronological order as they happened on Pern rather than chronological order as they were written.

I am reading Nora Roberts this week.  I just finished reading Homeport this morning and started on Sweet revenge today.  Easy reads waiting until my series books come in.

The library book sale had two books from her mystic irish series on sale so I got both of them.  I've read it sometime in the past but I don't remember the details so I can read it again and enjoy it.  After I finish off the "ptb" Anne McCaffrey series that I'm currently reading and the book on the Amish that I picked up when I didn't have the PTB book with me.

"Powers That Be"  It's the title of the first book in the series.  The first book is good.  After than not so much although she never does anything bad.  It's just that I got spoiled with Pern.

I believe there are about 3 books in it so far, "Powers That Be", "Power Lines", and I forget the name of the third one.
