I used to sew. I hate mending. I need to sew some pants for Ted. He is so hard to fit. But we're still in shorts weather yet. Sewing is such fun for little girls. I'll be warming up my machine soon.

Christy do you piece the tops by hand or do you actually quilt by hand?  My Granny used to piece quilt tops all the time.  She loved to go to a shirt factory and get the scraps and make quilt tops.  She had quilt frames and even did that by hand but not as much as making the tops.

The last time we were in Tennessee, Dianna picked out 6 tops that we need to get quilted.  I bet my Mom has at least 25 or 30 more.  She picks one every time someone is graduating or getting married, sends it out and gets it made into a quilt for a gift.  I have several here that she made.

To do all of that work by hand is amazing.  One of these days I am going to start quilting but that is on my list of things to do when I have a room to do them in.

guess i pice the tops by hand,  i use scrap meterial too, shirts, dresses things like that, i made this last year out of all unwanted shirts

i think some meterial just makes ugly shirts, but looks nice for a quilt

Very pretty Christy and all by hand.  Again I have to say I am amazed that you do all of that by hand.

Great potholders & crafts, Wrennie, & awesome quilt, Christy! If I had to sit still long enough to make a quilt, I think I'd hafta go off & kill something!

I got turned off from sewing way back in the 7th grade when we had to make a dress for home-ec class. After mine was all done & handed it in, the teacher gave it back to me & told me to pink the seams before she graded it. I wound up with a very nice zig-zag cut right up the middle of the skirt, cuz I wasn't watching what I was doing! :SmileyFit: What a turn off! Now I dont sew unless I absolutely have to... which turns out to be lots oftener than I want to!

When Shelly got married, we couldn't find dresses for LaRelle & I that were the right color (LaRelle was maid of honor), so I ended up making them, using silk for hers & organdy & silk for mine.  I had no idea until a seamstress told me when I was all done, that those are hard fabrics to work with! :o They turned out awesome, but I don't think I'd try something like that again, now that I know the "rules"! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)

I haven't been able to find baby girl sun bonnets anywhere... they just don't make them anymore but Shelly & I don't like the style of bonnets that are available now.  I almost ran out of thrift stores in my search, & finally found a home-made one at the last place I tried, only it was too small. :SmileyFit: Drag out the sewing machine & head for the fabric store.... :rolleyes1:

This morning I sat down at the sewing machine & used the little tiny bonnet as a guide, to make one like it, only a larger. Not knowing what size the baby's head is, I put a call into Shelly (got her voice mail) & used my flower aquarium globe as a model, cuz I figured that it was about the right size. Just as I was finishing it up, Shelly returned my call & gave me Lil's head measurements.
Her head is 2" smaller than the globe! Back to the drawing board! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F1frustrated.gif&hash=220b28e2bc11504db374795283ade15d34876242)

Here's what I ended up with...
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FBonnetFront.jpg&hash=bff6ff77eebec5a2215daaa27c0ac18fe52b54c2)

     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FBonnetBack.jpg&hash=18417771e0752bbeb9f091ac0b8a59fb0d4525c0)

Not bad for my first try, but I'm not even going to send this one, cuz I can see already that its WAY too big for Lil!  (It even turned out to be too big for the 20" flower aquarium... I was thinking that I'd be using more seam allowances than I did, I guess.) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyHmm.gif&hash=03637d579ac4c4fe32b65926e809f6f73809c153) I wonder if it'll fit BG! :laughmao:  I need a smaller "model", so I'm heading for the fruit stand with my tape measure... I'll probably spend more on an 18" melon than I did for this fabric, but I have plenty!

Christy that quilt is all shirt scraps! Wow!! I never would have guessed!

Patty, great baby bonnet. Especially since you dont like sewing. Can't you give that to Shelly to save for Lil to grow into?

:laugh1: I was going to say the same thing Penny, "about as much as you bake?"

Tina, that makes complete sense to me.

Rita, what a great idea to make the boys jeans into a quilt!

The first sun bonnet DOES fit BG! (It even fits me!) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FBG-sunflower9-7.jpg&hash=426138634e39aae2323df8e2e2aa2eb9c2aeac61)
Wrennie, I don't know if kids BG's size would wear a hat like this... (unless they're playing "Little House on the Prairie"), but I've seen Shelly wear some pretty strange things, & this might be right up her alley, so I'll send it to her so they can have "Mother-Daughter hats"!

With a smaller "head" to work with, I was able to make one that Lil' can wear, rather than using it for a hammock! Now that I have the size figured out, I'll be making sun bonnets to match the clothes I bought for her birthday. JoAnn's coupons will be good, starting tomorrow. :wink5: I need to do some fast sewing, to get them done in time to send to Maui in Monday's mail. :grinnnn:  I also threw a "Turbietwist" together, to add to the box of birthday presents. (Baby's birthday is the 20th & Shelly's is 1 week later.)
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FBonnetTwist.jpg&hash=defe0a2fef2fe5874eb7349f968c85ec6dbfc317)

I'd never seen a Turbietwist before... probably cuz I don't watch TV, but a friend of mine showed me hers the other day & thought it was a neat idea.  My assistant modeled it for me, in exchange for making her one.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2FBG-turbietwist.jpg&hash=7b032a3ec9fd9091ec2e2e47bf9c5b5447e0fed3)
I have more nearly-new towels in my linnen closet than we'll ever use, so this is a good way to thin out those shelves.  After BG's, I'll be making one for myself, & they'll make good stocking stuffers this Christmas. (Looks like I'll be leaving the sewing machine set up for a while... might even get to some of the mending that's been building!) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyDisgust.gif&hash=af8064275063bec54fd55940c20c9ee3953cb4b9)

:yikes: hlc!  :Wow:  wrennie!!! how much do you sell your aprons for???  :SmileyFit: i want the gingerbread one!  :SmileyFit: i want the gingerbread one!!  :SmileyFit:. :grinnnn: i looooove gingerbread men!!!

wow patty i didnt realize how big it was till i seen your pic, pretty lil girl,   now that i see how small it is,,,,,awwwwwww! thats so cute!
that lil head thing is the neatest thing! what is it? n i havent seen a head wrap [turbietwist] in years! you did a good job on it, my aunt use to make em n wear em when i was a kid,

:grinnnn: finally! i got a plane on my next quilt , got the pattern made up n already started cutting the fabric!  im making it about the same size at last years but im doing 2inch squares instead of 4 this time, gee that only means i need  lil 1,296 squares!   :laugh1: that should keep me busy!

n wrennie i got just about all the fabric cut  for it you sent me ! :NewHug:  not the penguins though, thats for bb, did you know she loves penguins? if i have to watch happy feet one more time,,,     , i wanna make her a lil pillow with it.

:Wow:  I didn't there were so many talented people here and then there's me!   :smileyNo: I used to sew, but I put my sewing machine away years ago as my interests went in other directions.  It's got cobwebs on it now.  :rofl1: When I did sew, I preferred doing crafty sewing rather than clothes.   :Whis:
Title: Re: So, do you sew?
Post by: Patty S on Sep 10, 2007, 04:03:39 AM
Christy, I guess I'm farther out of the loop than I thought, cuz I'd never even heard of a "turbietwist" before a friend of mine showed me hers last week! They're sooo easy to make, & I have a whole line of girls in the family who are asking me to make 1 for them now! (They'll forget about it as soon as put the sewing machine away, but they'll find them in their Christmas stockings!) :wink5:

You must have missed where I said in my first post, "I need a smaller "model", so I'm heading for the fruit stand with my tape measure... I'll probably spend more on an 18" melon than I did for this fabric..." My flower aquarium globe turned out to be way bigger than what I needed to size the hat to, so the "lil head thing" is actually a cantaloupe that has the same measurements as my Grandbaby's head! (It just didn't look right without a face on it, so I drew one on & pasted a piece of a dried flower on it, for a nose! That's what silly Grama 's do!) :grinnnn:

I'm making a couple more sun bonnets, to match the colors of the outfits I'm sending to the baby for her 1st birthday & I'd better hurry up, cuz that cantaloupe is going to start getting too ripe, & I already have 2 others in the refrigerator from my garden! (I had to go & spend $1.30 on it, so I could be sure I was making the right size bonnet!) :laughmao:

Wrennie, JoAnn's isn't having a pattern sale yet, but there should be one coming up before too long.  They do it twice a year, once in the fall & once in the spring.  I wanna get my sewing projects done before that happens, so I don't get caught up in it... my main interest involves having my hands dirty, & that just doesn't mix very well with sewing! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)

Aww Christy that gingerbread one just sold on another forum I go on where I have a Christmas Crafts sale going on! She also bought the santa one. I'll have to look and see if I have another cut & sew panel for that one. :ScratchHead:
The prices varied from $12.99 to $21.99 depending on the cost to make them. Since I dont do craft shows anymore I've put them on sale to get rid of them. That one sold for $10.
2 inch squares!!!! That is very ambitious of you! And it will definitely keep you busy all winter! wow! I'm glad the fabrics i gave you will go in it.
I had no idea BB liked penguins! How cool is that?!

Hypothetically speaking, if someone was going to hand stitch a quilt together, what kind of stitch do you use to do put the pieces together?  Something like over under, over under, or a backstitch, or it it something totally different specifically for quilts.

I've been sewing for most of the day, & getting things rounded up to put in the box that'll go to Maui. (Will get it mailed tomorrow, cuz I didn't even get outside the house today.)

I finished up the 2 bonnets I made to go with the outfits I'm sending for Lil, & they turned out fine.

I "cheated" on the green one & used a lace ruffle instead of using fabric & messing around with a gathering stitch... that one sure went together a lot faster.  Also made a variation in my "pattern", by easing the ruffles into the body of the bonnet at the ends. I think it looks better than the way the ruffles are on the purple & blue ones. I didn't break ONE needle this time when I was sewing! :yikes:

I've put the machine away for now, cuz I need to get back out in the garden. (I didn't even have a chance to water today!) The Christmas projects will just hafta wait. Now I can put the cantaloupe in the refrigerator before she goes bad! :laughmao:

Very pretty bonnets Patty.

Triss that all looks like a quilt(s) in the making to me.

Patty the bonnets  came out really nice. Isn't it going to feel strange cutting into miss melonhead?

And Christy I did forget, but I just remembered.

Sheri I had no idea your daughters name is Ginger... did I?? I hope I have 2 more panels then. I bought them years ago. I dont know if i could even get them again.

Well its really pouring out there so i guess I can search for them(?it) this morning since i cant go outside & do anything.

Books, magazines, the internet, fabric stores. I have 2 cute ones in my 'yard sale' stuff for appliqued quilts.

oops patty i did miss lemon post! the outfits n bonnets look so good together,

triss i do both stitches, when i first pice a fabric together i go over n under then a back stitch, i only do the under n over first to help hold the pices together so when i back stitch i dont sew the fabric crooked,   :Whis:
looks like alot of nice fabric ya got, i would start by counting up n wrighting down how much fabric ya got, get a few patterns ya like n try to match up what all you can fit into what pattern. or make your own to fit your fabric into the pattern.  i like to play in art to work on a pattern.
heres the pattern i did for the pieced quilt im working on now, of corse it wont be those colors, the red are flower fabrics, except for the middles those are a goldish yellow leafs n  tanish white with hearts, n the green will be green flower fabric

then i messed with it again, thinking i might put somthing between the blockflowers

Patty, I just LOVE those bonnets... almost makes me wish for another lil girl so I could put something like that on her.

Christy, that is going to be such a pretty quilt.

Yes, all of this talking had me going through my craft box.  As you can see I have started prepping for quilts many times and that is as far as I have gotten.  But last night I started.  Just jumped right in with a flannel and jean throw for one of the boys.  I have been taking pics but I need to get it loaded.  And I know there has to be an easier way to do this but it is sure fun.

Its Mercury. I think it would look good with that on either end.

hmmmm I wonder if a different dye lot will be noticeably different from what I have...... i think maybe the black is better. but if theres no black......whatever else you think would go good with the red. just not green. too christmassy.

Title: Re: So, do you sew?
Post by: Triss on Sep 12, 2007, 09:16:53 PM
Here is my project.

The materials, a piece of light flannel and a bunch of mixed up squares and rectangles of jeans.
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi219.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc62%2Ftriss07pics%2Fcrafts%2Fth_100_4298.jpg&hash=9abd817daf98a0873cc66fd497348cdde0df1c1d) (http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/triss07pics/crafts/100_4298.jpg)

I laid all of the jean pieces over the flannel and pinned them down.
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi219.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc62%2Ftriss07pics%2Fcrafts%2Fth_100_4299.jpg&hash=440e071b01ac72165a7817befa020986da46146b) (http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/triss07pics/crafts/100_4299.jpg)

Then I cut all of the pieces and pinned them together in the pattern.
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi219.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc62%2Ftriss07pics%2Fcrafts%2Fth_100_4302.jpg&hash=779950904cf396efee134295d6292d89831cd945) (http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc62/triss07pics/crafts/100_4302.jpg)

This is it all tacked together.  I still need to go back and stitch it and then cut the material so I can wash it for the finished look.

Not the pins.  My poor fingers are all full of holes.  I think I am gonna get my machine fixed up and out of storage to do the rest.
Title: Re: So, do you sew?

Is Dan any good at that type of thing? I can fix some of my problems with my machines but sometimes they need an expert.
Title: Re: So, do you sew?
Post by: Triss on Sep 12, 2007, 10:56:48 PM
I think I can fix what is wrong, it is just that the thread holder on top broke off.  It screws in and out but I need a new part and have to find where I can get that.  I want to take it to a shop though for a general cleaning and once over since it has not been used in a few years and has been gathering dust in one garage or another.

All of that sounds good Rita... On my wish list is one of those machines that will do embroidery designs.  Then I can put pics for the kids on the squares of material, or their names... I think that would be so much fun so I am asking for one for my Christmas/Birthday present.

I am gonna get my machine tomorrow and find the part I need to get it fixed.  And a table so I can set it up in the bedroom.

you don't remember which part ya need?  :dunno: My grandfather used to fix all mine up all the time when he was alive.. but he taught me a lot about how to keep my machine up.
