When I insert a 3.5 floppy in my disk drive, run word, and go to my A drive to open a document I get the following window and message.
you do not have access to the folder'A:/'. See your administrator for access to this folder.
Can anyone help me with this? I don't want to have to type in all of those recipes again. Oh and BTW the slash is actually backward to the one shown.

Did you double check that the little lock is slid in the unlock position? On the disk, in one of the corners, there is a small slide to lock/unlock the disk. It's the first thing I always check.

Can you access that drive from Windows using explorer? Is that the complete error message?

I moved the lock and now I get the error message 'A:/' si not accessible. The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted.
I couldn't use explorer but I went into windows search and it said the disk wasn't formatted. I guess the disk was one generation to old or maybe it was done as a backup file. I've never had any luck with those. I guess I'm stuck to type them all in again.

OK, move the lock back (to unlock it). That wasn't the problem. Then try what Jim said.

Usually if you can access the disk with explorer and not when saving with Word it's not a disk issue. As far as the tab goes, if you move it so that the "hole" is closed, you can write to the disk. If it is open, the disk is protected.

I tried to use the run fuction and it just sits there it won't bring the directory up. And the little hourglass icon is showing for the cursor.

Tammy, I don't think it is the disk. But I couldn't tell you what the problem is. Just don't throw the disk out.

Do you have a friend that has a computer that you might try the disk in? It can be any number of things when you get the explorer.exe not responding error. Most of the time, because Windows is a terrible housekeeping system, you may be reaching your memory limit. You might try reading the disk right after booting the computer, before you do anything else.

Well I got one of those error messages. The ones that direct you to a link for additional information. When I got there it was Windows and the message was that my windows was no longer supported. The next thing I knew a bunch of my computer files were gone. Word, Excel, Access, The top part of the start up menu where the windows stuff was. Just bunches of things. The favorites don't show up unless I go to history. I needed this when I have the flu didn't I. Is this something windows does or is the the newest level of damage created by the trojan horse I think I have?

Sounds more like a virus or spyware to me. If you have an older version of Windows, it may not be supported, but Microsoft wouldn't make files disappear.

i'm feeling alittle paranoid after what's been happening around here. No suprise there right?
Well I guess it's time for another computer. And from now on I write out anything I want to keep. Computers are not dependable.

Without the interaction of the internet, computers are pretty reliable. Once you subject your computer to the internet you add so many variables that are really hard to define. All the hackers out there don't help things either with all the malware that circulates.
Unfortunately, though you have to try and stay up to date in order to be safe and reliable.

Unfortunately staying up to date is costing more as the years go on and I just can't afford it. crazy right. Probably 1000 hours worth of work on this computer and I can't afford to protect it.
I found a way to find the programs. If I go to run and then browse they are still in there. It's just the start up menu that has been destroyed. So it's inconvenient but still useable. I'm storing my documents on a flash drive but it only handles 1 GB how many KB is that please?

1 GB = 1048576 Kb
THIS (http://www.whatsabyte.com/P1/byteconverter.htm) may come in handy, it's what I used to figure out how big a flash drive I needed to back up all my stuff.
Oh, and office max has a sale for a 32GB flash drive for $20 right now. I ordered one, with 20% off (has the cupon code right there) + shipping my total came to just under $25. Good deal since 32MB drives are normally $50 and up.
