Title: 2 person job 1 person available
Post by: duh on Sep 02, 2009, 09:37:16 AM
So many things around here seem to require two people to fix.  But maybe I'm just not looking at it right.  So I'm hoping someone can give me some tips on how I can do it with just me.

I have a mirror over my mantle that has it's frame screwed into the wall.  The problem is that the mirror has fallen out of the frame and is sitting catiwampus behand the frame.  I want to take it down but I'm affraid that if I unscrew it when I take the frame down the mirror will fall and I'll have more bad luck than usual.  Anyone have any ideas on how i can do this?

Next on the list is the bathroom tub hot tap.  The knob isn't solid so that when i turn it i'm also turning the tubbing that the water runs through.  I know there is a plastic screw on the bottom that i need to turn to tighten it but unless the knob is held steady it won't work.  I can figure out how to take off the access panel and get underneath but i can figure out how to turn the bottom and hold on to the top.

That's it for right now.  Thank you for any help you can give me.

Can you tape the mirror to the wall, remove the majority (or all) of the frame, and then untape and remove the mirror?

Can you hold the handle with a long handled wrench, while turning the screw underneath?

I was going to talk duct tape for the mirror too.
I couldn't quite understand the thing about the water tap though. I guess I would need to see it. And if I was there to see it I could hold it for you.
I do know what you mean about one person to do two-people jobs though. I have run into a little of that myself. And the more I am doing out there, the most I admire John's industry. Not that I didn't appreciate it before but more so now.

i would have said duct tape the mirror to the frame (not the wall) and then unscrew it.  that is what i would do.

Are you going to take it completely down or just down to repair it?  If you are just going to get the mirror back in the frame you might be able to use the duct tape to get it lined back up.  If tape won't work, you might be able to realign it with some sort of suction cup.

If the mirror is really big as the others have said, duct tape. But do it one at a time. You can also use duct tape to be a extra hand in with the hot water knob, just duct tape it to the cold knob..... this should be on the " The Red Green Show".  Or on " Tool Time".  :laughmao:

If you are unsure, use either the pro strength, or the new gorrilla glue tape.

I'll look for those while I'm in town.  Thanks for the suggestions.

The missionaries came over and dinner wasn't quite ready so I had them help me.  Between the three of us we were able to finesse the mirror out from inback of the frame.

Then I had to bust it to get the frame down.  The previous owner had taken really long screws and run them underneath the mantle through the frame and into the wall.  I didn't know that until after I broke the frame and damaged the mantle.  It now has a mountain shaped break in the mantle on one side and a screw sticking through the mantle and into the wall on the other.

I have definitely learned never to ask a previous owner to fix anything on a realestate deal.  Just take the money away from the deal that it will cost to have it fixed right.

At least this next fix is a one person job so things are looking up.

did they help you with the faucet?

no I didn't get help with the tub faucet.  That will have to wait for another day.  I need to have the panel off when they get here because they only have an hour to eat.  So I like to have it on the table.

If dinner had been ready I wouldn't have had them help me with the mirror either.  But I had messed up on the timming of the bone in chicken.  I normally do that with a boneless fillet.
