Title: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: bayou girl on Feb 29, 2012, 11:54:44 PM
I figured i will be doing a lot of odds and ends, so i'd start a topic for it.

the current/latest is decorating onesies for the babies that are due.

here are the 2 i did today.  the first is a replica of the guam seal, as the mother was born on guam.

and this one is "short hand" for "for love, add hugs"

I've been reading up on Pysanki, or how to decorate Ukranian Eggs.  I love the idea but more craft tools just aren't in the budget this year.

I have looked at that, but don't think my hands would be steady enough.

If you stick with geometric shapes you can do it by applying tape to make straight edges and then applying the wax along the wax.  But I do understand what you mean.  Considering how I shake when taking pictures that would probably do me in.

Hairpin Lace

A couple of the lace on the frame

Making it
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv322%2FJiffymouse%2F2012%2FIMG_3009b.jpg&hash=0e4d064886a0449421facaabeabb42702e2eeff7)

taking it off the frame
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv322%2FJiffymouse%2F2012%2FIMG_3009a.jpg&hash=f270a514d96569c5c6ee4e6297705d03a30465ac)

when i get it long enough, it will be a headband for zoe.  it is about 1/2-3/4 in wide and i need it to be about 18-20 inches long.

by the way, you can make the center narrower and the loops longer, and use the loops to join and make large things like afghans and shawls with it.  i just haven't yet.  i just bought the frame because i got tired of waiting for someone to make me one.

I'm going to start on some tin christmas ornaments that are made from tin cans.  I've had this book for awhile now.  I finally pulled it out to see if I had the tools necessary and whether I could pull it off.  You'll have to cross your fingers for me.

Cute onesies.
Just recently got  a hairpin lace "loom" (or whatever its called) Haven't attempted it yet.
Title: Re: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: bayou girl on Oct 24, 2012, 09:18:59 PM
Wrennie, you can do it, it is very easy, and the "hardest" part is taking it off the loom. it feels like it is going to fall apart, but it is actually as strong as a crochet chain or length of single stitches.
Title: Re: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: duh on Oct 26, 2012, 09:57:34 AM
Well the Scandinavian Star was a loss.  That's what I get for ignoring directions.  I used a smaller can and the points didn't extend past the middle part.

I can't believe how many tin cans I empty every week, wow!

It's interesting what I'm learning trying to do this project.  Who knew finger nail polish is suppose to take of the stamps on a can.  Or that I should be able to scrape off all the glue with a paring knife.  And the icicles are easy.  I'm going to do them next.  I just need to find my awl.
Title: Re: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: duh on Nov 15, 2012, 08:11:39 AM
Found my awl now I just have to get back to it.  But since the tools were all out on the craft table, in the craft room.  (man it is nice to be able to say that again.) I decided to go some very simple jewlery making.  I love owls and they had a rhinestone one at Walmart in the craft department so I got it and some chain and some of the magnetic barrel clasps and went to work.  Only took a few minutes after I unearthed the tools that were buried under all of the tin cans.

Oh do you remember that tin of buttons I bought at the auction?  Well I now have the craft that will make that purchase less of an extravagance.  It's bookmarks that are made by gluing 3 buttons together and then gluing them to one of those extra large paperclips and then covering the join with felt.

Since I had just decided that I was going to collect bookmarks this was perfect.

Would you believe I also found a "chosin" bookmark at Eaddies consignments too?  It's a little blue elephant.  I'll have to take pictures off all my different bookmarks at some point.

It is but the layout of Goodreads is different, of course, and I can go to a persons name, see all of the books they've critiqued, what they're reading, how they rate it so far - all on one page.  No scrolling back and forth.  I can look at a list and if I see a book I'm interested in, I can read your critique.

I think the layout for Goodread is designed around reading so it's going to offer more options that SSH for that kind of dedicated information.  Our book review topic could be more formal and organized but I kind of like it the way it is.

I've been making a list of all the things I want to make.  I think it has gotten out of hand.  There is definitely a lot of work there.
Title: Re: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: duh on Mar 27, 2013, 07:56:57 AM
I have 45 things on the list.  Some of them are big and some of them are small projects.  Now I'm in the process of putting them in some type of order.  I started to just number them 1 through 45 but that's not the way I am working right now.  Right now I'm doing quilting, knitting, and crocheting in tandem.  So I should have a 1a. Crochet, 1b. Knit, 1c. Quilt, and then put the felting under either knit or crochet depending on which one I use right?  At least that is what I am thinking.  We'll see.

Title: Re: random crafts that don't fit elsewhere
Post by: duh on Mar 28, 2013, 08:15:02 AM
Actually it's (a) for quilting, (b) for knitting, and (c) for crocheting.

I decided to cost it out and it would have cost me 55.27 a month over the next 15 months to do everything on the list.  And some of the things just aren't needed until something wears out so I'm taking a really good look at what I have on it.

So far I've knocked off two projects off completely.  One project got knocked off because the back is gorgeous but the front I didn't like and it would require that I be very careful choosing colors because the wrong colors and it looks awful to me.  The second project got knocked off because it was in a super bulky yarn and I just can't see that for a bed jacket especially one done with open work.  It just strikes me as a crafting oxymoron.

Another 4 are on a very long term holding pattern.  They are for jackets and I already have plenty of those so I'm putting these on hold.

But I have to say that this spreadsheet has finally gotten me feeling organized where I wasn't feeling that before.  I just felt like I was all over the place.

Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
2 cups applesauce
2 cups cinnamon

Mix applesauce and cinnamon together, adding more cinnamon if dough seems too wet, and more applesauce if dough is too dry.

Sprinkle countertop with cinnamon, and then roll dough out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters, and place ornaments on a baking sheet. Reroll scraps to make more ornaments.

Let ornaments dry on baking sheets for several days, or until completely dry. Alternatively, bake in a 200° F oven for 2.5 hours.
You can add a tablespoon of Elmer's glue to the mix. I am not sure if that makes it stronger or last longer.

Post by: bayou girl on Dec 12, 2014, 10:51:31 PM
thanks tina.  i did not add the glue, and they did just fine.  i did coat them with glue when they were finished to give them a kind of shiny finish because they are a mat finish when dried.  and make sure you poke the hole to hang them with before you bake or let dry.

That sounds fool proof, I'll have to see if I have a glass container that will work for mouse proof storage.  That's a lot of cinnamon.  I'll have to go get a large container of cinnamon.

i baked mine, and the one with the beads on it, i just pushed them in the dough and baked them, then brushed them with glue when the cooled (because they come out otherwise).  the tree with the "garland" on it is just some yarn scraps i had glued to it.  the broken one is part of the "picture frame" that i did that broke because i tried to take them off the pan before they cooled.  i glued it back together tonight, now that i am not so frustrated with them.

tina, i did not coat the back, so yes, they still smell nice (even this long later!).  i just put enough glue on them so that they would not be "dusty" looking or feeling.

wrennie, i think glitter would have been better than beads to be honest, but i didn't have any...

I've completed the blue egg with pearl lace ribbon trim and the Ralph Lauren Inspired rhinestone egg.  I still have a couple to go.  When I get them all finished I'll take pictures.

See the nice pictures? lol.

I did the red one with a gold wire that loosely wraps around the egg.  I call it thinking outside the box.  The silver one turned out to be white with prism glitter.  I don't know what to do with it.  I'll work on pictures though.

That's great.  Maybe one day when we are on at the same time you could chat me through the process.  I'm a mess at learning new things anymore.
