My friend, Charo, who is a master knitter, says there is a new way to knit socks. She's the one who got me started on the pair using 4 needles that I never finished. She says the 4 needle method is a thing of the past. She is a chunky little woman with really thick ankles and store bought socks choke her legs so she makes her own. She's going to show me how to finish my socks one day using this easier method. If I'm ever brave enough to give it a try I'll post instructions and pictures.
-
I would really appeciate that. But if it's using the dinky circular needles I tried that. it drove me crazy and I went back to the 4 needles. Even if they do slip and slide.
-
as usual I was over thinking the problem. Harriet set me straight. Now between knowing how to turn a heel and leaving the grafting method of joining I just might be able to do this. I'm excited. I'd like to be able to make socks.
-
for pictures of the neo-victorian fingerless gloves and the spiral you'll need to go over to ravelry.com and look up my projects my user name is tkhooper. Very original I know lol.
-
she did use circular needles but she says they aren't small. I don't like using circular needles no matter the size.
Did I say I finished my summer scarf now that it's winter and the wrong colors for the season? I'm taking my other yarn to my book club tomorrow night, where my knitter friend will be, and she's going to help me get started on my new scarf with another pattern. I'll probably get this winter scarf done by summer time. Hope we can get it done before the book talk starts.
-
Good luck with the knitting. I've traded my current knitting project in for a crochet project. I get cranky with myself with the knitting because I'm just not very fast or good at it. It's much harder for me to learn at this age than it was when I was younger.
-
I've started my scarf. It's a lace pattern. My friend, Charo, is tutoring me through it and she made me do a gauge which I've never done before. So far doing the gauge has been the hardest part and I'm still not exactly sure how we did it. She casts on differently than I do too. She said it had to do with the delicateness of my yarn which is bamboo. Took me forever to cast on.
-
is it that thing where it's the cast on and the first row at the same time? I can't do that at all. I understand the concept but it's beyond me when it comes to the hands on practice.
-
BTW, this is the year of the sock. I've got a pattern where there is a seam on the inside of the foot.
-
I might finish my socks too Tammy.
-
Should we start a knitting projects 2014 or just keep on going here? I'm still determined to do those socks.
-
and I'm going to pull out the vest and attempt the sweater again. Something has to go right this year. I'm determined lol. I say that a lot in this thread.
-
I've started the two needle sock. Cross your fingers for me.
-
Crossed.
-
oh yay.
-
Well the ribknit at the top is done. Now it is time to turn the heel. Of course I don't remember how to do the ssk.
-
The computer knocked out the post I had just made. But I'll say that I am happy with the two needle sock pattern on ravelry and plan on using it for all future socks.
-
that's a good thing tammy. that you have a sock pattern you like.
-
thanks jenn. I'm a third done on the second sock and can't wait to finish. Then I'll use the rest of the month of the sweater project. I'll have to buy more sock yarn for the next pair of socks.
-
i do wish i actually enjoyed knitting. but it just makes me angry. i can't get into it like i do crochet, even though i can do most things knitting, even cables. how sad is that?
-
I understand what you are saying. I have to really keep at it before it becomes ok rather than a chore. Mostly it's about dropped stitches and the needle falling out of the work. Once I get past those to things it is better. The "Knitting Answer Book," has several ways to hold the needles and I'm tempted to try learning a way where I don't let go of the needle. That seems to be where most of my problems are and it slows me down a great dea.
I finished the first pair of socks. I made a lot of errors. But for the most part I just need to tweak the pattern I think. That is when I can find it again. Everything is playing hide and seek with me at the house. I guess that means it is time to clean.
I bought yarn for a second pair of socks for sharon for christmas. I'm done with the top portion and am ready to start the heel. So as soon as I find the directions I'll do that. It's a beige color with metalic copper color thread running through it. It's really pretty.
-
i can keep the work on the needles, and don't drop stitches (often) but i just don't like it in general. now, having said that, i am thinking about making a simple pair of slippers... think i'm nuts? i do.
-
I like to stretch myself. Otherwise I get bored.
-
I don't think you are nuts. I think you are confident and enjoy trying things a second time to see if you can improve on your results. But then I am nuts lol.
Sharons first sock is done and looks great and I have started on the second one.
-
Sharon's socks are done. My second pair are started. And I'm doing an Asian inspired tunic. Pretty fancy huh?
-
sounds good to me.
-
Me too!
Now the third pair of socks are finished except for sewing up the seam but I hope to do that today. Then it is back to work on the tunic.
-
Finished sewing up the 3rd pair of socks. Now I've started the 4th pair.
Have I mentioned the Asian Inspired Tunic? That's kind of not getting anything done at this point but I hope it will get better.
-
gosh you're moving along on those socks.
-
Once I got the hang of the SSK they started going pretty fast. I hope to do about 1 pair a month. I had to frog the 4th pair because I had dropped some stitches and had not noticed. But I'm back at it.
-
First sock of 4th pair is done except for the seaming.
-
4th pair of socks are done.
The Asian Inspired Tunic has the front done and I've started on the back.
-
I'm on the armhole shaping on the Tunic. I'm happy with the progress so far.
-
-
It slowed way down. Thanks for the thumbs up Tina. Now that I'm not working on the cookbook very much I can devote more time to the knitting.
-
I started on the first sleeve. I have my fingers crossed.
-
I'm past the cuff and working on the forearm.
-
The tunic is a frog. The worsted weight yarn is to thick for this project.
Next on the list is the batwing, crew-neck sweater with a pearl and smock front. Doesn't it sound exciting?
-
Well I bought a 3 ply red heart yarn. I bought 8 skeins of 384 yards each. Lets hope that is enough.
-
I'm starting on the botton with a 1x1 ribknit.
-
Nan gave me a row counter. I'm not sure how much use it will be on he batwing but it will definitely help with other projects.
-
I thought about you today duh when a friend told me she's addicted to looking at Raverly.
-
lol yes that can happen.
I'm almost 2/3rds of the way up the front of the batwing sweater. I've decided to do the double moss stitch rather than the stockinette stitch.
-
I'm lengthening the arms at this point and I've decided not to do the crew neck. I like the idea of a cowl neck instead. And I won't be shaping the neck and then sewing on the cowl. I'll do it all of a piece just changing from the double moss stitch to the rib knit stitch again. I'm excited by what it looks like so far. I hope it continues to look good.
-
sounds wonderful tammy. i'm really considering breaking out the knitting needles... maybe.
-
You may want to wait until fall after the gardening season. My plate is seeming pretty full at the moment.
