Title: Barleychown's back yard
Post by: barleychown on Feb 19, 2008, 08:21:11 PM
I want to share with you all the progress that has been made in my back yard over the last two years.

This is a shot of the lot, from the back, facing Main street, while they were tearing down what was left of the burned house:

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi28.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc222%2Fbarleychown_z%2Fmain%2520street%2520house%2Fhouse005.jpg&hash=fb5b8f89d353e2668f63980032b7ee6f201dbd6f)

This is a shot from while the house was being built:

And a little later in the build:

This is from last spring:

These are shots from last summer when things were growing great:

These shots are from yesterday, after moving compost all day:

This year, we will be working on adding perennial flowers to the "bones" of the gardens shown here. :yesssss:

I was there yesterday, & it looks even better in person!  :yesssss:

When I first saw the house, when it was being framed, I thought that making anything presentable out of that yard was next to impossible & would take a lifetime. (I guess I just don't know how to think outside the box!)  It's amazing, how much you've done with that yard in such a short time, Sarah... & it just gets better & better, every year! :Yahoo:

Absolutely wonderful Sarah.  I cannot believe how you have turned that blank canvas into an awesome garden in such a short time.  I would love to see a shot from the 2nd floor of the house towards the creek like in the 2nd pic you posted.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. :grinnnn: I get to feeling like things are not moving along as fast as I would like them to be, but when I see the pictures all lined up like this, I realize it HAS come a long way. :dancingbunny:

Sarah, you have done a remarkable job on establishing your gardens. :grinnnn: It is hard to believe that you have only been there for such a short time. We have been at our home for four years and I am way behind you in claiming my garden spaces. Sure wish you could fly down here and help me get mine all filled in!

I would love to have that pile of compost! :)

WOW, you can really see the creek now with all that ivy off the trees.   And I tell you, from all of the other pics, I always assumed that the greenhouse was on the other side of the yard.  Really puts it into perspective seeing it like that.  That is one of those shots to take each year as it grows and grows.

Dianna, I had a general idea of what I wanted to do for these gardens, long before we purchased the lot. So, two or three years of planning went into this, before I ever set foot on the place.

I still have huge plans for the gardens, and I'm sure I will keep plugging away at them.

Triss, let me tell you...that ivy is NOT going down without a huge fight. It's still popping up everywhere. :viking:

Yes, that stuff is hard to get rid of.  I think I will keep my ivy in their containers in my bathroom.

You certainly have done a spetacular job so far on your garden.  I would have been very daunted there in the beginning.  It might well have overwhelmed me.

The property I'm trying to get has a lot of bramble on it along with some young trees but nothing like you had to clear off.

Like you my lot fits in very well with the plans I had been working on for a long time so I can start right in on them as cash permits.

I still have so much to do back there, but it sure looks better this year.

Looking great out there, Sarah!! Want to come do my yard?? Looks like mine is on hold until the fall for now. That's OK- I have enough to do for the moment! :giggle: and that'll keep me busy this fall!

May I ask the size of your back yard?

:Wow: What a great idea, to create more gardening space! :Yahoo:  (That's the sort of thing I tried to describe to Patti, for full-sun gardening in the middle of her otherwise shady yard.)

You just keep giving me more ideas, Sarah!  Now I'd like to have 485 days in a year, so I can have a longer growing season! :wink5:

Your yard is looking better & better every time I see it... & it was already awesome, before you added to it!  (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FYouGoGirl.gif&hash=b7b76df0d05ce2f05384705bdc19997b0bcde11a)

Geesh, Sarah, it's really hard to comprehend everything you've accomplished in just a few years.  :Wow:  You really do such a wonderful job of making the best use of the space you have in your yard.     ;)

Looks awesome Sarah.

What is the new fence on the left separating?  And did you lose the yard fence on the very far left?  It kinda looks like it is sagging a bit but may be the camera angle.

I cannot believe how much it has filled in so far this year.
Title: Re: Barleychown's back yard
Post by: barleychown on May 23, 2008, 10:45:19 PM
The new fence is to keep dogs and chickens out of my herb beds...they were trampling them to death. Plus, I needed more raised bed space. So far, it's working out great!

The other fence is fine, just looks messed up in this pic. :nutz:

Here's a pic from today. We have the veggie garden all laid out and half planted, and the start of the pergola up. The trees are putting ut lots of new growth, and the shrubs are flowering.

Is the pergola what I see in the bottom right corner?

And what do you have down making the lighter brown lines in the veggie garden?

It looks awesome out there.

Post by: barleychown on Jun 09, 2008, 10:47:16 AM
Yes, that is the pergola. It will cover the patio, so there will be some shade out there during the summer.

The lines are strips of carpeting left over from lining the pond. This is the second year using them, and so far, it's working well.

Mike built me an arbor at the bottom of the hill for the wisteria...

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv177%2Fbarleychown%2FIMG_0434.jpg&hash=797a2398786d81604680e899db08a1f8cb0d2227)

He will finish it probably Friday, then I will train the wisteria up over it.

That's gunna be great with Wisteria on it!  I like that it matches the one he built on your back patio. :Yahoo:

I hope he can finish this one without it falling on him! :Shiner:  He won't be doing things like that around there, if he gets hit in the head hard enough. That looks great.  Good going Mike.  I'm thinking I would like something like that where my sidewalk starts but I'm not that motivated to do things where I need to get up on a ladder.  Color me cowardly yellow.
