Well the early blueberries have been eaten. Now the blackberries are ripening. I picked about a cup this morning in the rain for a friend. I really need to figure out a wire fence for them so they are easier to harvest.
Then in late summer I'll have a couple of pears. It's a start.
-
I have decided to try grapes again.
-
what kind of grapes are you going to try?
-
I bought blueberries at the grocery store the other day and threw them away because they didn't have any taste. I bought some NC blueberries at the farmers market and they're yummy.
My blackberries are bitter as can be this year. I'm not sure they're going to sweeten up at this point.
-
I gave the ones that I harvested away. I may have to keeps some of the second harvest and see what they taste like.
-
my blackberries were a mixed bag. i made cobbler out of them and now they are gone.
-
If Johnny would eat cobbler I'd make one but I'm sure he won't and I'd have to eat the entire thing. Life is so hard.
-
Something got my pears before I did, darn it!
-
maybe the deer? I think that's what happens to most of ours because the fruit at the top, where they can't reach, is never touched AND sometimes it's obvious something has taken a bite out of one.
-
I wouldn't be at all suprised. I should start turning on the lights at night and see what I can see. Sometimes I'm up until the early hours.
-
My sister lives in WV and the deer eat everything including the bark of the trees.
-
Wow that can do a bunch of damage depending on how much they eat. I think I'd be looking up recipes for venison stew.
-
I found a sweet cherry dwarf tree, yeah! I dug up the turf where I wanted to put it. Watered the clay until I had a pond and then dug in. My neighbor came over twice to talk about it. I tried to talk him out of his big orange rocks. I want them to go with mine to make a rock garden. Don't ask me how I'll move them.
But now I have two cherry trees again. Now if they will just sell almond and hazelnut here I'll be in good shape.
-
So after I plant it, the night time temperature drops to below freezing. So far it looks like it is surviving.
-
I am glad, Tammy. I still have to plant my plum and apricot trees. I have some berries and grapes to plant as well. Getting a late start.
-
It's hard to get started this year. I really have to get a move on if I want my garden to look good.
-
i need to get more fruit trees. my blueberries are doing well, i'm happy with them. and it looks like the pear blossoms survived the last frost. now to see what the fig does.
-
I have little tiny pears on the Bartlett Pear tree already. I love seeing them. If I can clean up the wooded area some more I'd like to add hazelnuts, almonds, and apple trees.
I'm glad your having good luck with the blueberries.
-
the blueberry bushes are covered in blueberries. just waiting for them to get ripe
-
-
I haven't seen one bloom on my blueberries. Maybe I missed it with all the construction going on. I counted 23 pears and 2 cherries. That's better than some years.
-
The deer think the pears are ripe so I bought 50 lunch paper bags so I can ripen them in the house.
-
I wish I could figure out what kind of pear tree I have. I've looked online time and again and never find the correct description for my hard, green, pear shaped pears. They are shaped exactly like what you think a pear looks like and never, ever get soft enough to eat.
-
my moonglow and bartlett look like that. They don't ripen on the tree you have to pick them and then put them in a brown paper bag for about 3 days. My bartlett become so juicy and wonderful. I hope yours will too.
-
Well I had to weed out the blueberry bed because I got a blueberry replacement for the one i lost and had to clean out the bed before I could plant it. It's called the "pink lemonade" Interesting name for a blueberry isn't it?
-
Sounds delicious!
-
I hope so. Today I looked out the window and a young deer was grazing in the front yard. Then she went after the dead fall pears. She seemed to think they were very good.
-
sheri, is your pear a "sand pear"? i can't remember the proper name for them. but, they aren't "eating" pears, they are cooking pears. they are great for canning and you can use them from the jars as a substitute for anything you'd put apples in. apple butter, apple pie, apple crisp, etc, i've made it all with sand pears. and canning them is super easy too. they are a sugar/lemon/water bath canning project.
-
well it isn't 213 but I thought I would just keep this one going rather than start a new one since there is so much room. Let me know if that is a booboo.
I bought another plum tree. It is getting acclimatized while I get motivated to dig a hole in the clay for it. I don't know what specimen of plum it is, Walmart you know?
-
The grafted cherry died. That is two so there probably won't be a 3rd one.
The new plum seems to be doing well.
The cherry has stems on it so maybe this year there will be cherries. That would be nice.
The bartlett pear has me confused. Some branches had blooms and some didn't and most of the ones with blooms were at the top of the tree. Anyone have a good link for bartletts and how they grow?
-
This doesn't answer your questions really but it's all I found.

very nice article. It might be a lack of water that is causing my spotty harvest. I'll try to do better this year.
-
Do you have another pear tree nearby?
-
yes 20 or 30 feet away I have a moonglo pear.
-
Good, they have a better chance in groups of two or more.
-
so far the moonglo refuses to bloom at the same time but I have hope. It's suppose to be a match for the bartlette.
-
jiffy I looked up pictures of sand pears but I don't think they are. Whatever the deer seem to love them.
