Title: Book Review Corner Vol. 5
Post by: duh on Jun 29, 2011, 07:21:04 PM
Well I just finished Elizabeth Lowell's, "Death Echo."  You know she writes great romances but her detective novels aren't all that inspired and this Twist on a man's adventure is awful.  I've read Clive Cussler and several other authors that right in this gendre and trying to put a female twist on it just didn't work in my opinion.  But then maybe that's just me.

I finished IN TOO DEEP an arcane novel by Jayne Anne Krentz and INTRIGUE a vladimir novel by Mercedes Lackey both of which were great but then I'm a fan of both writers so I'm probably alittle bias.

Why do I always run out of library books when the library is closed?  Is Murphy hidding around here somewhere?

We are discussing Little Fuzzy on ABE under Classic SF Book Club.  I think that's what the topic is called.  I think I need reinforcements lol.  I always feel so stupid when I go to that website.  Is it just the difference between Brits and Americans?

It's the differences Tammy.

Your not going to believe this.  I found a romance novel without a sex scene in it.  Published by Love Inspired Books it's called "The Irresistible Earl," a historical romance like I used to read in the 70's and 80's but that then fell out of fashion.  I think they had done every possible scenario to death by then.  But I still enjoy them when I can find them.

That's cool Tammy.  I don't care for gratuitous sex or violence in books or movies.

me neither.  Evidently they publish an entire line that our local Wally World sells.  I'm going to set aside 4.34 every month and keep up with them.  Something good at walmart - who would have figured?

Have you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks?  Great book.

Don't bother to read the Uncoupling.  It got good reviews but may be one of the worst books I've ever written.

Right now I'm reading Little Bee.

I haven't read any of those books.  I'll have to look into the immortal life.  What's it about?

I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice and believe it or not I'm getting through it and it isn't driving me crazy.  Most classics give me heartburn to say the least.  But this one is good.  I feel like I've really made a break through with this book.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books, Tammy. I have read this one and Sense and Sensibility and Emma dozens of times each.

I'd like to try another of her books.  Which would you suggest?

I'm sure you are a great writer, your just ahead of your time.

I've ordered Sense and Sensibility we'll see how it goes.

I've also went overboard at the library site and now have 10 books on order and another 12 marked to order when I finish those 10.  Did I mention the three I already have at home only 1 of which I'm only half way through with yet?

This is what happens when I update my TBR list.

I just finished The Angel and the Jabberwocky Murders by Mignon F. Ballard and it was great.  The critics said, "Ballard writes with great warmth and sassy humor."  For once I agree whole heartedly.  I know I just about fell over with shock.  I plan to get the rest in the Augusta Goodnight series and enjoy them to the hilt.  Now just 9 to go lol.

Post by: bayou girl on Jul 20, 2011, 11:22:17 PM
i love the augusta goodnight series.  there was one or two that were not as good as the rest but on the whole, they are great!
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol. 5
Post by: duh on Jul 21, 2011, 06:49:19 AM
I'm sorry to hear that a couple of them aren't as good as the rest but I hope to enjoy them as much as I can.  I've started, "The Fortress of Frost and Fire."  It should be a quick read.  Mercedes Lackey does write page turners.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol. 5
Post by: duh on Jul 23, 2011, 09:57:33 AM
Well the Bard's Tale is evidently one of those games sort of like Dungeons and Dragons.  And the books are based on that.  after I finish what I ordered on that I won't order any more.  Travel adventures are all clones basically.  I was thinking it was a spin off of the Bard series which is about singers.  Wrong again lol.

Currently I am reading the second book in the Fuzzy series and I'm loving it.  I'll be through with it quickly.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol. 5
Post by: duh on Jul 26, 2011, 06:42:55 AM
I finished the second Fuzzy book and loved it as expected.  Then I read the third book in the series and it was work.  I hate it when an author tries to write a story from more than one perspective and that's what happened in book three.  I felt like I was walking through knee deep mud.  So now that series is over unless I want to read what other writters have written about Fuzzies.  And I'm just not sure at this point.

I'm currently reading one of Elizabeth Peters earlier works not an Amelia Peabody novel.

I found another light mystery series that features an angel. The book I read was by mary hart, and she has 3 or 4 different series going. The angel one I read was called "merry, merry ghost".  A feel good read.

I love those types of books.  I'll have to see if my library has any.

Currently I'm reading "Faking It," by Jennifer Curise.  I think that's how it is spelled.  I'm finding it very tongue and cheek which I also love.

she has other series, including one called "death on demand" which is centered on a book store owner who's store specializes in mysteries.  there are others, but i haven't read from her other series.  the death on demand books are pretty good too.

I read her lies to me and didn't like as much as the other one but then it might have been the subjects she choose to cover hitting alittle close to home for me.

I'm reading another Mignon F. Ballard and loving it.  And I got the new Mercedes Lackey book, "Intrigue."  I'm really looking forward to that it's the second of the series.  Oh no I think I just finished that one it was the number 3 that I wanted to get.  lol, I'm such a mess.
Title: Re: Book Review Corner Vol. 5
Post by: duh on Aug 10, 2011, 02:32:22 PM
Well I ran through 2 Jennifer Crusie books and loved them both.  One I stayed up until 4a.m. reading.  That messed up my schedule lol.  Today the book I bought, "Handbook of Ornament," by Franz Sales Meyer came in.  I'm really excited bout this one because I used to have two copies but lost them in the separation and could never remember the exact title or find it when I would google.  So now I have it back and this time I plan on holding on to it.

I have when I lose a book. I read 3 "feel good" books by Lisa Wright. I liked them. They are similar to Debbie macomber's work. Same kind of feel good stuff. I hate reading something that leaves me in a bad mood.

I've been reading Sandra Brown.  I would swear they were written by different people.  Sometimes it seems like a woman wrote them sometimes a man and sometimes a gay man.  And then there are some I can't read at all because the subject matter bothers me.  Anyone else read hers?

Romance I guess.  About 60 best sellers according to her blurb.  Some are more like suspense it seems to me.  Some are close to pornographic to my mind.  But maybe my mind just stays in the gutter.

the titles of the latest are as follows:

by isis crawford - a catered wedding, a catered halloween

by chris cavender - pepperoni pizza can be murder

and all of laura child's books have recipes in them.  they are great. she has 3 different series.  the cackleberry club, the tea shop mysteries, and the scrapbooking club mysteries.

none of the above have gratuitous violence or sex in the either.  they are good light reads that don't leave you in a bad mood.

Sarah's key is a part fiction part true story of what happened to children in France during the Holocaust.

I read the Help.  It's good and I've heard that the movie is great.

If you like true historical stories In the Garden of Beasts is great.

Finished Elizabeth the Great by Elizabeth Jenkins.  It was really good.  The book is falling apart so I'll have to save up for book repair supplies since it's part of my collection.

I'm in the first fourth of The New Decorating with Pictures by Stephanie Hoppen and I'm very disappointed.  If she is writting about how to decorate with pictures I'm not understanding what she is saying.

I'm also reading The Messenger.  It's a modern translation of the New Testament.

has anyone read the shack?  our speaker tonight used that book as a jumping off point for her speech.  i was guarded because, as she said, the book deals with the holy trinity, and we are a non-religious club (have several jewish members) but she did a good job.  she actually spent most of her time drawing a parallel to our club helping people who find themselves in "a circumstance" rather like the person in the book.  it was interesting.  and very nice to hear someone outside our club sing our praises.  she reminded me of a project we undertook a few years ago, where we provided white undershirts for students at a high school where they were required and a lot of the kids did not have them.  it was a new rule and the kids and parents had not had time to get them together. they didn't believe the rule would be enforced.  it worked out nicely.

anyway, i was just wondering if anyone else had read that book.  i did and it was a good book.  well written but a hard read because of part of the subject matter.

When it rains it pours.  I'm tired of the Terry Prachett books so of course those finally came in.  The Mercedes Lakey that I ordered came in too and it wasn't anything to write home about.  The Jayne Ann Krentz romances were great so of course I sat down and devoured both of them within a day.  I got two more today and I expect that by friday when I go back into town to meet Mike and Howard for dinner I'll have them finished and can return them to the library.  Don't ask me what I'll read next.  I haven't a clue.

i don't have anything special on my check out list.  and i generally don't buy books because I read too fast.

out of your list, i like anne mccaffrey and the books about asperger's and the forest people sound interesting.  building your own root cellar wouldn't work here,  the water table is too high.

i did just re-read iris johansen's silent thunder.  it is nothing like hunt for red october, but reminds me of that one.  if that makes sense.  i really enjoyed it.

I read fast too, but my memory is so bad that I can go back and re-read over and over again.  So my favorites I like to have.  That way I can read them in order without having to wait forever for the library to come up with them.

i picked up some of earlene fowler's "benni harper" series.  they all have quilt names and quilting information in them.  they are mysteries, but good reading. nothing too dark about them.  i am past being able to enjoy the dark psychological thrillers.  especially if they are graphic or gory.

I never could get into those.  Really ugh for me.

Today I joined Paperback Swap website.  If you join let them know I sent you.
So far I've listed 14 books, ordered 2 and sent off one.  The other I'll send off tomorrow.  I still have one book credit to spend.  I just can't decide which one I want more. lol

Time for a nap now.

How to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs sounds interesting.  Ant and wisdom in Eqyptian hieroglyphs is the same word.  Interesting since the Bible talks about ants and how wise they are.

The paperback swap is really taking off.  Right now I'm rating all the books I've read.  Which is fun.

Did you know they had a genre just for paranormal books?  I didn't know that.  I'm so far behind the times.  What was I doing?

Didn't much like Bitter Truth.  The next book is The Angel and the Jabberwocky Murder.

I joined a site called https://www.goodreads.com/ (https://www.goodreads.com/)  I have another friend on there and it's a good place to find ideas for books to read.

I finished Exhiles Valor today.  It wasn't one of her best but I got the ending I wanted to it wasn't all bad.  I don't seem to be in the right mood to appreciate the books I'm reading.
