Title: Forcing Bulbs
Post by: duh on Mar 19, 2009, 08:32:04 AM
Well I forced my first bulb this year if you don't count growing amaryllis inside.  It was a white Hycinthia.  I've got to say the flowers did not last at all long.

First I put it in the refrigerator underneath a box so no light would get in.  When the leaves were 1 1/2 inches long I took it out of the refrigerator.  I put it in a sunny window and kept the water to just below the bottom of the bulb so it didn't rot.  And it bloomed.  I'm glad I did it but I don't think I will do it again.  At least not with water.

The bloom faded very quickly.  I hardly got to enjoy it at all.  Hopefully the ones in the garden will do much better.  That is where this one is going when the blooms drop off.

Has anyone else forced any bulbs?  How did it work for you?

I did some narcissus a long time ago. Someone gave me a kit. If I remember correctly, it came with a container and a bag of pea gravel. Seems like it did okay, but I think I like them better outside.

I have to agree with you there.  I think I'll have to be very selective about what I force in future.
