I ought to be ashamed to tell you what I did to my little puddle at the end of last year. I will show you a picture, though, when I get it down/up loaded to help explain it....

In the meantime, when am I supposed to start feeding Samson and Delilah again? They sure are looking hungry out there....

Yep, the mulched area around the pond has the greenest grass within 20 miles. I've already mowed it once!

Since the hay worked so well as mulch for me last Spring, I thought I would try to mulch with again at the end of winter. I picked up a bale at the feed store and put it into the trunk of the car. Jim said he would bring me more, if I needed it. He brought me three bales home in the truck.

I didn't take into account that the bales I used the previous Spring had been setting up for a year (since the wedding) and that the seeds died during that year. Let me tell you that those fresh bales had really viable seeds! ;D

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi20.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb203%2FDixieAngelsMom%2FGardening%2FpondSSH.jpg&hash=8baf3f1e7ae6a7357214b17192022c0470b5e56a)

Jim mowed around the pond for me a couple of days ago. I told him we need to spread hay around all eight acres to have the prettiest lawn around!

Anyway, I will definitely be finding something different to mulch with this year... :D

I just added some real plants to the pond day before yesterday:

Louisiana Iris, Mini Cattails, and Calla Lily

I can't wait til they grow. They were sprouting in the pots we bought them in!

Hi Dianna I have a question on the cattails.. Are they a bog type of plant? I have some seeds and am unsure how I should treat them? ???
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Dianna on Mar 17, 2007, 04:24:03 PM
Rita, I would assume that you could use them in a bog. On the container the plant came in, it said to sink it anywhere from 0" - 8" in the pond. I think that they would work great in a bog!

Seems like I have some seeds around here, too. I will get to looking for them and see what the packet says. I will let you know when I find them....

Penny and April, we bought a pond kit from WalMart for around $100. Jim dug the hole to put the liner in and we have been landscaping the area since. We plan on doing a lot more to the area this Spring/Summer...

Rita, I had "Bunny Tail" seeds, not cattails. I googled cattails and found a lot of information on them. They are definitely a wetland plant, so a bog garden would be an ideal place for it...

That pond kit was just the beginning.  The rock is slate from a local hardware store.  Then we had to build a filter because the water got terribly green and slimy.  Dianna got the pics and instructions off another gardening forum, I think, and we put together a filter that has kept the water crystal clear.  We have to clean it about once a month now.  Right after putting the new filter to work, we cleaned it once a week until the water cleared up.

This kind of pond is really easy to make.  About all you need is a shovel.  Dianna has some pics she took while we were constructing this one that I'm sure she has posted on another forum.

Beautiful pond, Rita! And those boulders are awesome! I wish I could find some to add around my little puddle...

The Bunny Tails are an ornamental grass. I have never planted them before so I don't know how well they will do. I plan on planting them somewhere around here soon when the weather warms up. I got the seeds from a gardening club that we were members of at one time. The things are probably two years old and may not be viable, but I am gonna try it, anyway.

Is that your son out there by the pond, too? He is a doll!

Yeah that is Nicholas.. The bolders were there when we moved in.. I they are HUGE LOL
I just love the sound of the pond in the summer it is refreshing and peaceful!

The name is cute for a grass ... I am going to try and start the cat tails inside and see if they sprout or not :)

Yeah, Dianna saw those and I said it would take a crane to get those in here. My Dad said we could have all the rocks we want as he has some old rock fences that were built years ago. Some have been replaced with wire but the rocks remain. Guess we will have to make a trip one day soon in the truck and bring back some.

Rocks really do add alot to a pond area! If I could get more I would for sure! I just wished I would not of picked under the pine trees to have a pond :P >:D :D But I am stuck with it now.. It does help with the alge though!!

You Two have a great area to expand and work with.. I put irish moss around the walking area of my pond. Its nice you can walk on it and it feels nice on bare feet!!

We dug the hole about four foot deep. We made our own liner with thick clear plastic we have on a huge roll (Free) and glued it together with pvc glue to make it big enough.  Collected the rocks (Free) and it all has fresh spring water going in 24/7 (Nearly free) It goes out of the pond near where my dog's tennis ball is and goes out to feed trees and shrubs and things.

Tina, I love that puddle of yours.

The 'grassy leafed stuff is loriope, big blue. The pond is approx. 110X5X 3 ft deep. It has changed over the years and gotten smaller than originally dug. We have about 8-10 larger fish in there at once and usually an uncountable  mess  of dark babies. I love the things that are attracted to the pond like dragonflies and bats. We get some really noisy tree frogs.
Because it is fresh water all the time we don't get skeeters.

Well Tina, I'm glad you have the bats and not me. Can't stand um.

Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Dianna on Mar 20, 2007, 10:14:11 PM
I don't mind the bats as long as they are on the outside of the house. It is when they come in and make themselves at home that I get a little leery...

Bats eat skeeters and that is a good enough reason to want to have 'em. I told Jim one day when we saw a "bat house" at the garden store that we needed a couple of them. The bats  might would stay out there where they belong if they had a home to live in. A buffet of skeeters would supply their food and the pond their drinking water...

I have, also, read that dragonflies can eat a million skeeters in one night. I love those little critters. And they are so curious. They will hover around and land on you just to show you that they can! I love to watch them when they are teasing Angel...

I made a typo. The pond is 10 by 5 feet. I put 110 up there. That's a LAKE!
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Dianna on Mar 20, 2007, 11:55:31 PM
I would love to have a lake myself, Tina! Your pond is still bigger than ours, and fantastic! I wish I could put a natural spring flowing through it. Mine is full of string algae right now...

I am already thinking of ways to expand the puddle that I have. I think it is on the back burner, though, until Jim gets his "ham" shack finished (as it should be)...

Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Tina on Mar 22, 2007, 12:10:02 AM
Even with the fresh water I got a nasty black stringy algae when I got some pond plants from someone.  We had to take the whole pond apart and clean everything in a strong bleach solution to get rid of it. I was scrubbing rocks (Small boulders) like crazy. We put the fish into the jacuzzi with about a foot and a half of water. which was outdoors at the time. Raccoons came and 'fished' away all of our fish. We forgot that they didn't have any rocks for  protection in there like they do in the pond. Had to get  new fish too.
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Dianna on Mar 22, 2007, 07:41:17 AM
Tina, I am getting that string algae in my pond, too, at this time. I guess that with the sun putting out more heat and the pond not having natural plants for cover, that it has the right conditions in which to flourish. Hopefully, we will be getting some "real" pond plants soon to cover it...

I have been wondering how to clean it all out. Will I have to completely empty my pond to correct it? Can I just "fish" all that yukky stuff out and trash it? Wonder if a soft brush with bristles would make a good tool to get that blanket of green out of there?

I am curious as to if the new plants that I just put into the pond the other day is causing it. The water was clear until I added them...

I worked some on my puddle when I got home today. I have an idea....

I am laying down these 4' x 5' squares made of polypropylene extruded board with carpet laminated to it. I plan on smothering the grass below it and keeping weeds from poking their ugly heads up. ;D Please, wish me luck!

I worked a good two hours today on getting it around the pond edges until I ran into some fire ants. I went inside, boiled some water to pour on them. Well, I missed some... :P

Went to weed the front garden bed until the ants calmed down and Jim could help me. Running into a big black widow put the brakes on the job for the rest of the evening. I will go back out there in the morning with some more boiling water to find both the ants and the spider and exterminate them!

My plan? I am covering all the ground with the carpet board and then will mulch with cypress chips. I just hope that when it rains, that the rock slabs around the pond will keep the chips from getting into it. I am then going to build a brick wall three bricks high to keep all the chips inside the area....

What say all of you ponders, out there? Think it will work?

And, yes, that is a lounge chair upside down over the puddle. I have to shade it with something to get rid of that string algae!  ;D

Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Jim on Mar 25, 2007, 10:53:26 PM
Just a quick note on the boards Dianna is using.  They are rejects from work.  They are about 3mil thick, made of black PP as she said with a thin layer of carpet laminated to it.  These were blanks that are used in a manufacturing process for trunk deck lids and the hood under panel for automobiles.  We would have to pay to have them landfilled so I brought about a half-pallet home thinking we could find some use for them.

I even cut one in a circle thinking I could put them around my trees so that I wouldn't have to mow so close.  We did punch some holes so that the water could drain in some of them and I think Dianna is going to cut some drainage slits in the rest.

That should work. Those are cool. i love free things.
I haven't run into fire ants yet. They are here in Cal but I haven't seen the imported ones. We have several types of ants and I'm allergic to the big red ones I grew up calling fire ants. . Not looking forward to meeting  the  imported fire ants.

Oh Tina, that is awesome!  I wish I had a little puddle like that in my yard.  I think water always adds something special to a garden and the birds and critters love it.   :)
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Tina on Apr 15, 2007, 11:38:14 PM
I must say that John does most of the work necessary for the pond. We actually have three '"ponds". Before the water goes into that one it goes into a smaller one up the hill that is not picturesque at all. That one is for the critters that want a drink. I have seen deer there and a mountain lion. A bobcat or two.  Thought about getting a critter cam but never did.
After the water leaves the big pond it goes to a lower one (through pipes) that the coyotes like to drink from. Then the water goes to different planted areas depending on who needs a drink.
When we first put in the pond and things we had a lot more water coming in. We had three waterfalls on the cliff side behind us. But the water slowed and we directed it all towards the pond.

Well, the 50 mph winds around here yesterday played havoc out by the pond. Jim had to chase my little black boards all over the field. ::) He, finally, put some more bricks down on them to hold them in place.

I haven't been able to get out there and finish what I got started yet, because of my foot. I am hoping it will hurry up and heal because I have a lot that I want to get done outside before winter comes back...

My front garden bed is full of weeds now...  :(
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Tina on Apr 16, 2007, 11:12:30 PM
It will all come together soon Dianna. You need your foot to heal so you don't end up with something chronic there. A garden is never, ever "finished". It is always a work in progress. The weeds will wait for you.

Next year when you go to the feed store, just ask for straw instead of hay.
That will be a sproutless mulch.

Title: Re: My Little Puddle/Filtration
Post by: Peggy on Apr 26, 2007, 10:39:31 PM
I see that Jim said that you BUILT your own filter?

I am wondering how you built it. I have seen one home made filter, where the lady uses gravity to run the water basically through a small cow trough that contains rocks and it seemed to work. I'm looking for directions for something like that.

It's too late for me to take a picture of my puddle.. it's dark outside. My puddle is a
large cow trough in the ground... still being planted around and decorated. It houses four koi.

Broken Link Removed...

This is my fish pond as of yesterday morning. I still have more plants to plant around it, and I still have to go to the river and collect rocks to go around it.

Luckily, we live very close to the South Umpqua and Cow Creek, where there is an abundance of large rock.

I like your slate better on your pond, but we are living on one income here until my son is old enough to move out on his own.  :)

There are four large koi living in it.... I had some beautiful greenery in there, but last fall some kids got into our yard and broke up the plants and hurt the fish.  We lost two fish to this baloney and the four that are left had major injuries.  One fish is "on loan"-- I'm babysitting her, until her mommy can come and get her.. she is about a foot long.. or so.

That is a very cool filter you all built!
I'm going to try that... a container like that is gotta be cheaper than another cow trough! ($100.00)

Thank you, and Adam for sharing!!  I really appreciate it!  :D Peg
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Jim on Apr 28, 2007, 10:16:30 PM
We had some trouble finding the large scrub pads.  We ended up using 4 small ones in each layer because we couldn't find any large enough to cover the whole filter.  The size of the plastic container is a factor also as the pump with filter attached has to fit down inside.  When this pump we have now has to be replaced, I think we will try something a little different but along the same lines.  I may just make a filter box, and use one of the smaller pond pumps from Lowe's.

I've been cleaning ours about every 4 days lately with all the trash and stuff that has been getting in it.  Now that we are mowing again it's difficult to keep the grass from blowing all over.
Title: Re: My Little Puddle
Post by: Peggy on Apr 28, 2007, 11:51:17 PM
I wondered about that...

I think our "pond" is going to require a larger tub too.... I figure we'll have to use more batting....  But, I still think it's a great idea...

I was reading tonight on a website about people who actually use shop vacs to vacuum out the sludge from the ponds!  I've been completely emptying mine and getting in there and scrubbing about ever 3 months or so!

Hooooooray!  No more of that! hahahaha!!!

One thing I really want is some pond plants...  Anyone have ideas about plants that can grow in  pond.... and how to plant them??

:) Peg

Peggy, I'm sorry. I didn't see this til now or else I read it and meant to post later...

Some of the pond plants that I have this year are the mini cattails, calla lilies, and water lilies. I bought them from Wal-Mart for around $5 each. If you are in an area that doesn't outlaw the water hyacinths, you would love those. I saw some in Florida last year during the summer and they were simply gorgeous. They, also, make a great "shading" plant for your pond. Parrot's feather is another good one to have in the pond for your fish to hide in...

On another note, the water has cleared up. You can see clear to the bottom of my little puddle now. Thank you, Jim, and Adam's filter!

I have been working on the little puddle for the past two weeks. Oh, my aching back! :( I am still not through with it, but have made lots of progress. I have been rethinking my plans for it.

Remember that I had just started working on the pond area again last year before I fell and hurt my foot? I was putting down the black "cardboard" as a weed barrier...

I have been slowly, but surely removing weeds from one spot at a time, after Jim dug up the zebra grass for me...

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi20.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb203%2FDixieAngelsMom%2FGardening%2FGardening367.jpg&hash=3a915f82027a43a8961e413b177e97a38bf52d9f)

I have accomplished more than this little spot since I started a couple of weeks ago. I am hoping that I will be able to finish up this weekend. After pulling weeds for fifteen minute stretches, my back doesn't want to straighten up, so it is taking me a while to get it done. ::) I am sure, though, that once finished, I won't have to go through this many weeds again to whip it back into shape every Spring... :grinnnn:

Dianna, it looks awesome with what you have accomplished so far.  Once you get the mulch down, the weeds will not be near as bad next year.

I love the ponds.  The only problems I'm currently worried about with getting one is running a pump 24/7.  Is it expensive?  Also my friend put in a pond and now has frogs croaking all the time.  I'm hyper sensitive to noise and I'm not sure how I would do in that situation.

I don't think it is that expensive, Duh. It is well worth the money to have that focal point in the yard...

I have been finding lots of frogs outside since I have been working around the pond. I don't hear them at night, though, because we run an electric fan when we sleep, along with the a/c.

Remember when my pond garden looked like this at the first of May? All photos are clickable...

:Wow:  You really HAVE done a lot out there! :yesssss:  How hard is it going to be, to keep it looking that way?

I just love that gazebo. :Glee:  Do you have flowers planted out there?  With all that area to maintain, if it were mine, I'd plant some stuff that stays in bloom all season... like Four O'clocks , Dianthus, Calendula/Coreopsis, etc.  I had those here & there around the yard last year, & they didn't require any maintenance at all, other than watering.  (My Dianthus, Calendula & Coreopsis never really died back during the winter, although they got sorta crappy looking for a while... but they all perked right up a couple weeks ago & are flourishing, something fierce, already this year!)  If you have any luck with Clematis or Honeysuckle, such climbers might look really cool on the verticle posts of the gazebo.

Keep up the good work! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FYouGoGirl.gif&hash=b7b76df0d05ce2f05384705bdc19997b0bcde11a)

Thank you, Wrennie, Patty, and Penny...

Patty, I have been thinking morning glories for the gazebo. I would love to see it covered with the blossoms. Four o'clocks are another shrub that I have been thinking about, too. I love the smell and I am sure the fish would, too.... :giggle:

If you look closedly at the gazebo, you can see that we have 20 bags of mulch out there, stacked and waiting to be put down. I am sure it will take at least that many more. I am at the designing phase right now, to get rid of all the straight lines and make it easier for mowing around and making room for Baby Huey to grow. Still gotta figure out exactly where I want him. I don't want him blocking my view of the pond from the gazebo or the deck.

I plan on laying cardboard/newspaper down to keep the weeds from coming back up through the mulch. What weeds that make it through should be easy to pull out. I did newspaper the time before last and it really made them easy to pull in the spots where I had it.

In front of the pond area, you should see an orange circle outlined. That is where our new pool will be going. I will be landscaping around that, too... :grinnnn:

My goodness Dianna, that is amazing!  What a difference and all of that hard work of yours is beautiful.  Are you planning on a bunch of plants as well are looking more for the clean lines look of just the mulched pathways?

I can see a trellis of clematis up the side of the shed oh and so many other possibilities.  What fun!!!

You sure have been a busy, busy girl, Dianna. It is looking AWESOME!  :applause:

I love some of the ideas mentioned here. Morning glories would look great, and come in so many colors...there is even one that is solid white and opens at night. It's called moon flower, because the flowers look like they are glowing in the moonlight. You could mix it in, too. :grinnnn:

I thought I saw the orange outline on the grass, but then when I looked again I wasn't so sure it wasn't just my eyes messing with me. :laughmao:

Huey is going to love it out there! :yay_jump:

Triss, I don't think Jim will let me put a trellis attached to his ham shack. :grinnnn: He did allow me to have a birdfeeder put there, though, after some pouting... :giggle:

Sarah, I am sad that I have to report that Baby Huey didn't make it while I was gone to Florida. :crying: I was so hoping that he would perk up and be bigger than the gazebo when I got back... :(

I have to get started back out there sometime this week. The weeds took advantage of my vacation and decided to flourish. I really need to go ahead and mulch it. I may start in the morning since I am trying to nourish the weeds in the front bed so they will grow and will be easier to grab when I yank them out... :giggle: (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!)

I bought some more pony tail grass this past weekend. Now I am trying to decide if they will be in pots around the pool or in the ground out there by the pond. :SmileyQmarks: I may need to buy more to "tie" it all in together... :grinnnn:

I am so glad that I didn't have the mulch down on the path when the pool guys came. We would have had it everywhere but in the path, though they were careful with what they were doing. I really need to move that pile of dirt out from behind the gazebo, though. With 90* temperatures, I don't think it is going to hurt for it to sit for awhile....

My plan now is to get the pond weeded and mulched before the weekend. I was going to get some wheat straw to mulch the pond, but decided that I would like to try the cedar mulch. I have heard that it is good about getting rid of spiders. With all the black widows we find out there, cedar it will be.... :applause:

Then you will have to put up a free standing trellis.  Two posts sunk in the ground with a lattice between them.   Cedar mulch is so nice to smell... I really like mine and will be adding more on my lil pathway though it is not easy on the feet if you are in the habit of walking barefoot like I am.

Thought I would post a few pictures of what the pond area looks like now, after Megan coming down to help last weekend and yesterday. She plans on coming back this coming weekend to help me finish up with the weeding/mulching, and then I can start adding my plants and flowers to it...

The smallest pond is the newest one. I thought that with the bridge between them, it would make the ponds look like one larger pond... :wink5:

I have to get my elephant ears dug up and moved. I am thinking about placing them along the wall of Jim's ham shack to sort of hide it... :giggle:

I have some canna lilies in the front bed that I am going to put out there somewhere, too.

I went to the plant nursery the other day to see if I could pick up some pond plants. Their pond wasn't looking good at all so I didn't buy any from them. I didn't want mine to get "contaminated"... :laughpound:

It seems like they would have cleaned that out by now and had their water looking clear. I am so glad they don't have any fish in their pond. ::) As it was they only had a couple of plants that didn't look dead...

The sago palm Aunt Bonnie gave me to plant in the garden is now dead. I don't know if it just didn't like the area (full sun) or if it was upset because she gave him away. :( At any rate, I am hoping to buy another to plant out there...

The elephant ears and pony tail grass are really growing out there now. They make the area look so nice. :grinnnn:
