This weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count sponsored by the Cornell Lab of ornithology and National Audubon Society. You can still participate if you want to. You don't have to be an expert bird IDer! You can do it for just 15 minutes. Or all weekend. Here --> http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc
This morning on my way in I saw 2 American Robins eating left over apples in a tree down the street from my house.
Marton just called and told me we had an invasion of Cedar Waxwings across the street. He estimated 75!! :thspeechless-vi: They are big fruit eaters and were in the multiflora rose, honeysuckle, and other yet to be determined, brambles across the street.
Aren't they pretty! --> http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Cedar_Waxwing.html
Anyone else have any cool or spring is coming sightings?
-
We have birds like crazy right now. I do need to get some pics to ID them cuz I have no idea what they all are but this week I saw some with very bright yellow on them. Will have to keep my camera close by the window since I filled the feeders this weekend. Once the sun comes out today, so will the birds.
-
Thanks for the link, Wrennie! :thx: Probably the only interesting birds around here have been the large number of Cardianls we've had this year! :yesssss: It seems like there's been a lot more than in the past!!! :ScratchHead:
Boy, those Cedar Waxwings are beautiful! :Wow:
-
Look what showed up at my back door today.

Pretty... what kind of bird is it?
-
is that a band on it's leg?
-
it is a band. It's an albino pidgeon.
-
How pretty. Is your killer cat leaving it be?
-
Thats so pretty.

I don't see white feathers all over the yard so I hope Albino Bird flew back home.
-
Lets hope so!!

I can't find our bird thread. These are 2 of the birds that were in Ginger's pine tree this weekend.

those are good shots sheri. i'm glad you are back and posting. i missed you.
-
So pretty.
-
Awww, those are cute.
-
Those are bluebirds. Pretty.
-
I had bluebirds in the backyard and on the deck today. I'm not sure they have ever been that close to the house before. And then the most interesting thing happened. I heard a knocking on the back door. Well there are no stairs back there so it was questionable I had heard correctly but I went to check. Shadow was standing up leaning on the back door looking at the wood pecker that was looking in the house while holding onto the trim in the glass panel of the door. He had knocked as if to say happy thanksgiving. It was just great to see him. Maybe he was telling me he liked the addition of the bird bath to the garden.
-
Awesome!
-
that is cool tammy!
-
I liked it yesterday. I wasn't too keen on it today. I began wondering what kind of damage he could do to the trim on that window.
-
Yes, they can damage. I'd watch and maybe put something up that might scare him away if he wants to continue. A shiny pie plate hanging around may work.
-
I just happen to have one of those. It's got the rest of the pumpkin pie in it at the moment but that won't last long. lol.

Where is Wrennie?

Too big for the nest now.
-
Are they killdeer? :grinnnn:
-
I think they're wrens.
-
Ahhh, so the nest isn't on the ground? :)
-
No, it's on top of a post on our front porch. At first I thought it was a mockingbird nest because mockingbirds were constantly on our front singing and chirping. I don't know what that was all about because it's a wrens nest.
-
Here are my baby mockingbirds. You can see moms legs in the nest with them.

That is an awesome picture, Sheri...
-
that is a great photo sheri!
-
They're out there chirping away.
-
Stormi is bound and determined to get the birds. The cats are under constant attack from the parents. Johnny had to stand with the cats so they could eat this morning but this afternoon Stormi was on the fence not paying attention while both parents bomb her. I've put out more pepper and Johnny has stuck cardboard around the fence hoping it will make it impossible for Stormi to jump into the shrub. Only time will tell.

I had a 30 pounder if he was an ounce wild turkey fly right out in front of me as I was driving into town. He barely cleared my windshield. Talk about a bird that doesn't look as if it was ment to fly.
We have a little sparrow sized black bird with a white fluffy chest visiting. He likes the deck railing for some reason.
And the blue jay keeps checking out the cherry tree even though it will be another 3 years or so before there are cherries on it.
And the cardinals have been flitting here and there.
I love the birds in my yard.
-
Gosh duh. I'm glad that turkey didn't cause you to wreck or hit your car. I've never seen a turkey fly but I haven't seen many alive turkeys in my life.
Speaking of cardinals, I usually have a yard full but since these mockingbirds have been hanging around my back door I haven't seen a one.
-
the only bird i have noticed in my yard this year is a mocking bird. but i have had others in prior years. i like birds as well.
-
The babies have taken flight. I saw one of them hiding in the spirea on the other side of the house this morning. The cats aren't around and Andy doesn't seem to be bothering them. If human parents took care of their babies like these bird parents have the world would be a better place.

yep!
-
I'll agree with that as well.
Today I saw a different bird on the deck. I wouldn't have seen them at all except they moved one of the chairs and it made that scraping sound. Who knew they could move a chair, plastic I'll admit but still.
They looked about the size of a woodpecker. Had the woody woodpecker head and a brown body the color of a sparrows, but their breasts were chartreuse. I'm wondering if they are here to feed on the locust.
Anyway he sat on the chair and stared into the window for a bit. It was interesting.
-
that would be interesting. on my property, and at ellie's most of what i've seen is mockingbirds. but when i'm driving, i've seen a lot of cardinals. i like cardinals.
-
I like cardinals too. We have quite a few where I am.
-
Cardinals are beautiful. I think the areas that don't have them are really missing something. It's beautiful when they sit in the fig trees when the leaves are gone.
