Title: Knitting Projects

I have a few more that are done but I didn't get pics yet.  I will share those later.

I was so cold at work yesterday that I wore the fingerless mitts.  I think I need to make more just for that reason.  I can knit with them on at the ice rink too.

Very nice! I cut the finger tips out of a pair of gloves because my hands get cold when I type.

Good job Jessica.  Can you take you a heater to work?  It's terrible to have to work in the cold.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects

In one office I have full control of the thermostat so I am not cold there.  It is at the other office.  I don't have a heater there but I might bring one.  I bring a sweater to put over my legs and sometimes I wear gloves.  I do not like to be cold and I am someone who is cold a lot.

I can certainly relate. And I have no control in my office either. And we aren't allowed portable heaters. I have a blanket I took to work for my legs and wear a jacket. Not very professional looking, but if they want me better dressed, they need to keep it more comfortable in there.

It's terrible having to wear gloves at work - been there done that.  I have a little heater in both my offices.  It's not the same as being warm but it's better than nothing.

I did a sweater once.  I'm been thinking about trying some socks.  The ones from the store wear through so quickly.  Anyone have a pattern or know where a free pattern is?

I have some patterns, Tammy.  I could scan them and e-mail them to you if you want to give me your e-mail address.  Otherwise a good place to find patterns is www.ravelry.com (http://).  There are tons of free knitting and crochet patterns.

Yes, I use 4 needles.  It is tricky at first but you get used to it.  I use 4 for mittens also.

I've made a crochet pattern for hunter socks so I'm good there.  I've decided to knit a sweater.  I did one years ago and it worked out well so I'm not anticipating any problems.  I won't be doing any fancy stitches just ribknit and stockinette.

It's progressing slowly.  I'd forgotten how much slower I am at knitting than I am at crochet.  Of course as warm as it is this winter I may have plenty of time to complete it.

Figured it out.  I cut the yarn and then pulled it through the last stitch.  It closed up like it was born to it.  Perfect end.  I liked that.  I was scared when I did it because I was afraid it might unravel on me.

Well so far I've finished the front and I'm up to the increase below the armhole on the back.  So it's comming right along.  At this speed I might be done with it by spring.  Just when I would normally be putting the winter clothes away.  Maybe when I'm finished I should wrap it as a Christmas present for me next year lol.

Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Feb 21, 2012, 08:46:47 AM
Ok I did all the increasing and decreasing on the armhole.  now I just have to shape the back of the neckline at the appropriate place and I'll be done with the back.  Maybe a day or twos work.  I'm thinking I'll have enough yarn that I can do a small lambchop sleeve.  I do love those with a long cuff.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Feb 22, 2012, 03:47:07 PM
Ok I'm up to the neck line and it's time to add another needle.

Do they have little caps for the point of the needles when you have a part of a project just hanging around?  I ask because I'm using metal needles and I'm afraid of the stitches falling off of the needle while I'm paying attention to the part I'm working on.  If so what are they called and where do i get them?
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: bayou girl on Feb 22, 2012, 10:05:38 PM
yes, they do.  they look like dummy plastic bullets, but they are more rubbery.  however, a cheaper alternative (i learned at the yarn shop) is to get a package of the foam "beads" that they sell for kids to make necklaces out of.  the holes are small enough to fit the smallest of needles, and the foam expands for larger ones.

if you can't find the beads, the end caps for needles are available at places like ac moore and michael's as well as yarn specialty stores.  another alternative i have seen used is corks.  like from wine bottles, or fishing stores.

Thank you for the heads up.  I definitely am going to add those to my shoping list.

I finished the back.  Now it's on to the sleeves.

I've got the shoulder gather done and am past the armhole.  So I'm moving right along.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Feb 27, 2012, 10:47:05 PM
i'm down to about elbow length and it's time to gather in the extra width and make the rest one long cuff in rib knit.  I haven't done rib knit for ages so it may take a couple of false starts before it's working good.  Cross your fingers for me.

I finished the first sleeve and have cast of the second sleeve.  It's starting to come right along which is good.  Because while I've been doing this one I've found several others that I want to do.  For not being a clothes hog I'm definitely finding the projects to do.

i'm just hoping this will fit.  I don't think I have another frogging in me.  I finished the second sleeve and made a mistake but I think I can fix it by adding some small panels on the sleeve from the armhole to the elbow.  We'll see.

Last night I started the collar.  I got to the part where I start decreasing.  Slow but steady wins the race right?  Fingers crossed this fits or I may have a hissy fit.  I may even go so far as to start following directions.

Here is a picture of the pieces.  I haven't finished the collar or added the rib knitting to the bottom of the front and back.  I wanted to know how much yarn I had left before I did those two pieces because I can fudge quite a bit depending on how much yarn I have left.  So far I have one crocheted sleeve to frog and a skein of yarn that I didn't touch the first time around.  So that's quite a bit for the rib knit.

Well I made something flat on the circular needles.  Isn't that just like me?  Anyway I've made a very simple fingerless glove and now I'm started on the second one.  I like the ease of making them.   Sorry I forgot to snap a picture.

Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Mar 25, 2012, 08:57:53 AM
I've been slowly making my way through the knitting dictionary with 400 stitches in it.  I had to have Harriet show me how to do the moss stitch.  It wasn't working because normally I twist my knitted stitches.  Doing it the correct way so the pattern comes out correctly is a pain in the pa-tu-ty.  But if I want the results I have to follow the directions.  It's the stitch that the jacket is made of that i love.  Of course when I'm going to have the money for that one is beyond me.  We are not talking pennies here but 70 dollars.  Of course once made it will last me for years so it's well worth the expense if I can ever gather it up in the first place.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Mar 25, 2012, 08:59:34 AM
I forgot I just completed a basket weave pot holder front in the crochet.  Now I just have to find the pennies for gas and that heat retardant fabric and I can complete it.  I have the batting.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Sep 10, 2012, 10:27:13 AM
I've started the batwing smocked sweater.  I'm trying to figure out how to hand knit it.  The directions are for machine knitting.  And of course I'm altering it as I go.  I never leave anything alone.  It's weird looking at the moment but I'm hoping it will improve.

Is it a new thing that they don't have the 4 inch swatch stitch and row indicators anymore on the yard?  That through me for a loop.  I'm used to seeing those so I can make an educated guess as to how much yarn i need for a project.

Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Sep 23, 2012, 08:40:12 PM
Well it looks like I bought enough yarn which is god.  The sweater is comming along.  I've got most of the front done.  I another 5 inches and I should start shaping the neck hole.  I plan on a crew neck on this one.  So finish front then do back then put together and do neck and cuffs.  Hum, sounds like I should have started this several months earlier than I did.  But I'm still happy with the progress.

Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Sep 28, 2012, 09:03:25 AM
Thanks Tina.  It's going so slow because I'm weaving a second color of yarn through the first in an inverted triangle.  It takes forever compared to just doing the stockenette stitch.  It will be awhile before I do something like that again.

Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Oct 06, 2012, 03:45:25 PM
This is all about filling the gaps in my closet.  I have almost no long sleeve sweaters and there is always the chance that it will get cold during January and Febuary.  And crochet sweaters usually require an undershirt because of the size of the holes in crocheted sweaters.

I plan on doing this one and a black one with a cowl styled neckline.  Then it's back to working on window quilts.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: bayou girl on Oct 06, 2012, 08:57:31 PM
i love cowled necklines.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Oct 07, 2012, 03:28:11 PM
I like them too.  Of the sweaters I have on my list I have a shawl collar, the cowl nect, a mandrin collar and the crewneck that I am currently working on.  Would you believe on Ravelry they had a 12 sweaters in 2012 competition?  There is no way I could do that many in a year unless I were crocheting them.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: bayou girl on Oct 07, 2012, 09:37:19 PM
i am not sure i could crochet that many!  but i would only do the cowl and the shawl necks.  maybe the crew, if it were loose enough.  mandarin and mock turtle drive me nuts.  i feel like i am choking.  but you do inspire me... maybe i'll try again with a crochet sweater....
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Oct 08, 2012, 09:36:56 AM
The mandarin I usually want a long thin v-neck with an alligator pin close so I can adjust the tightness.  And yes I like the loose crew necks as well.  Usually around 21 inches or a little more.  I don't like the mock turtlenecks either.  I used to like the ruffled scoop necks but I've got skin tags now and the skin is getting wrinkley and that kills it.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Oct 26, 2012, 09:53:34 AM
Crochet sweaters are nice as cardigans or ones with undershirts.  But I don't like the holes in the crochet.  I suppose if I wanted a really bulky one I could do one with the afgan stitch but then you have to do it in sections and deal with the roll.  That's such a pain.

I finished the shoulder on one side of the front piece and am working on the second shoulder.  I'll be glad to finish the front so I can start on the back.  That's all one color so much easier to do.  After that it's just the cuffs and the neckline and I'm done.  I'm looking forward to that.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Nov 15, 2012, 07:57:35 AM
Well I finished the front and I'm well into the back portion.  I had to stop to make Jeffry a pair of fingerless gloves.  I'm eyeballing this one so I hope it fits.  I got one finished yesterday except I couldn't figure out how to do the individual fingers.  I wanted to make them up to the first knuckle but it was beyond me.  I'll have to find a pattern for mittens and see how that juxtuposition works.

That's it for knitting for the moment.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Nov 29, 2012, 09:10:38 AM
I should have used a pattern.  It came out to short and the arms are to long.  So that took care of that.  Crochet is so much easier because I can measure as I go along.  Awe well, I have something to keep me busy through the winter I guess.  This rather makes me glad that the camera is acting up.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: bayou girl on Nov 29, 2012, 07:15:47 PM
Tammy, couldn't you pick up the bottom and add on?  I don't know how to say it, but I guess like you would tunisian crochet.  use a crochet hook to pull the yarn through and cast onto your knitting needles, and then just knit down instead of up?  that is what i'd do, and then if anyway said anything about the "line" at the waist/hips/wherever it falls, i'd say it was in the pattern :wink5:
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Nov 30, 2012, 07:44:21 AM
unfortunately the waist is ribknit and the body of the sweater is stockenette stitch.  And since it is batwing pulling out the top which is the length of both arms and my bodice would be very time consuming especially since I never learned to put a safety row in my knitting.  That's such a good idea.  I really have to learn to do that.

But it's ok.  I make my first "finger" in my fingerless glove.  What a pain those three knitting needles are.  And guess what my DPN's are a smaller size so of course the thumb that I did was very tight.  Now that will have to be pulled out and I'll have to figure out how to deal with that.  Always something.  I think this year people will get the "wrist warmers" and next year they will get the fingerless gloves.

Right now I started the black cowl neck sweater.  I'll need more yarn to finish as usual I didn't buy enough first time around.  If I would follow patterns this would be so much easier.  But it would also cost more than it would to buy the silly things in the store.  That is if I could find the style I like.

Absolutely, My tush is always cold so I like the sweaters that go down to my thighs.  It takes more yarn but its so much better.  Plus I like the heaviness of a 4 ply yarn rather than the lighter kind that commercial sweaters are being made from.  That way I don't have to wear a sweater.

I just started the second skein on the sweater.  I'm excited about it.  I was working on it at the church social and a lady asked me to finish a scarf she started for her husband and can't complete.  This is good because i won't be able to buy any yarn until may and that means I'd be out of yarn for about a month.  So now that project should take up that month.  It's always good to be busy.

It's getting out of hand...this happens the moment I'm not paying attention.  Now I have one fingerless glove partially completed, the scarf partially completed, the batwing sweater needing to be frogged, and the boatneck cowl partially done.  Ugh.  I've got stuff strung all over.  What a mess.  It's a good thing I live alone.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Dec 20, 2012, 06:35:06 AM
Ok I'm 80% done on the scarf.  Now the problem is that it is getting alittle long and I'm not sure if I'm suppose to stop and make tassles or just keep going or stop period.  fun working without a set of instructions.  I wish I knew how to put in a safety line.  I'd do that and then knit the rest and if I needed to pull it out I could.
Title: Re: Knitting Projects
Post by: duh on Dec 21, 2012, 10:00:24 AM
Well I made it long enough in my opinion and there is enough yarn left to make tassles if she wants them.  Hopefully she will be happy with what I did.  I'm just glad to be done.  Now I have to finish the fingerless gloves I was working on.

pulled out or unraveled.  so called because you "rip it, rip it, rip it"  when you make a mistake.

I've started the fingerless black gloves and of course  I got the k and p mixed up.  But it still looks good so I'm going with it.  Anyone have a fancy buttons they are willing to trade for something I have?  I can't find any fancy buttons.  Sounds crazy doesn't it?

2 sets of 2 buttons each appropriate for teenager girls about 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter.
Thanks for looking.

Well I just did the thumb hole for the first glove and I'm about 1/4 of the way up the back of the sweater.

Hope you'll post pictures when you get finished with these projects.  And long sweaters are not only warm, they're also in style.

i don't think long sweaters ever really go out of style.  i love them and am contemplating trying my hand at making one.

My camera is acting weird.  It's on video and won't come off so I can't take any photos.  I'll have to dig out the instructions and deal with that at some point but life is way to busy right now to add that to the list of things to do.  Maybe next week.

I like "knitting" for sweaters because I use the worsted weight yarn and that is way to thick for pullovers in crochet in my opinion.  I don't like bulky things.

Thanks for looking.  That project is currently in the frog basket anyway.  I'm just a terrible knitter.
