Title: My Water Hole
Post by: johnnie on Sep 29, 2009, 02:28:47 PM
Hi All
This is my pond at day,at night and most of the fish.
My pond holds 3000 gallons of water + another 350 gallons in the filter. The fish are all bar two Koi Carp the odd two being golden Tench. In the last pic bottom left is one of the tench. Val and I enjoy sitting out in the porch in the evening particularly when the weather is nice chilling out with a nice glass of wine and what could be better than eating alfresco outside.

Please don't be jealous it is not that hard. Hard work yes but follow a few simple rules and anybody could have a pond to be proud of. You have a free supply of rocks in the USA (I think)
the most important thing to remember is water will always find it's own level so the key from the start is make sure everything is level at each stage and make sure you have the pond you want right from the start going bigger later will be expensive. Read as much as you can cope with and visit as many web sites as you can find there are hundreds both in the UK and the US.
The kit etc between the two can and is in the main different but the principles are the same. Plan to have the rocks around the edge sunk for a more natural look. My rocks are sunk around two thirds of the pond, this allows for access and to sit by and enjoy. The fish? this is obviously personal choice, all my fish are bred and come from Japan and are very popular in the UK among fish keepers, not so popular in the US for all sorts of reasons one being import laws etc etc etc, but to have a nice pond you don't have to have the best fish. When I first started I had just goldfish and they served me just as well for ten years or so.

 the UK and the US.
This is really pretty funny. Bayou girl lives in a rockless area. Really. Whenever she travels she comes home with suitcases full of rocks for her yard. She has been mailed rocks by some of her friends. You don't know how much you miss rocks in a landscape until you don't have them handy.

Ha Ha no rocks in her region of the USA that's like trying to pick a stone out on the moon (better move to the Rockies)
It is much the same here, Where I live is called the bread basket of England, that means clay and arable.Seriously I had to buy my rocks in. Rock areas here are north, west and south west
I am east & we are flint, the south is chalk (Jurassic) anyway you are not allowed to take rock away for use from anywhere in the UK also you are not allowed to take pebbles from the beach which could land you in trouble with the law.

You gotta look hard to find any rock here too.  Lots of sand and water though. :giggle:

Makes me want a pond, but it would turn out to be my dogs bathtub.
