So far I've choosen white, red, blush pink, and blue columbines, New York Aster pink And maybe Nemsia if I have enough containers and soil.
What is on your list to wintersow?
-
Hmmm, i havent thought that far ahead yet, but columbines are on that list.
-
when you say wintersow are you talking about planting in a cold frame outside and then transplanting in the spring?
-
Actually I'm thinking milk jugs with tops. I haven't even thought of building a cold frame yet.
-
Milk jugs, pop bottles, cranberry juice bottles, things like that.
-
Anything thats plastic, and has a lid, can be used.
-
dodge gave me the idea of using old windows as a cold frame. We have some of the ones that we took out of this old house that I could use. Of course I haven't done it yet but might sooner or later. Someone has a website that's dedicated to wintersowing. I can't think of who.
-
That would be Trudy, at wintersown.org.
-
Yes it is. You're smarter than you look.
-
Yes it is. You're smarter than you look.
:rolleyes1: :wink5:
-
Well it's a fall sow not a wintersow but I'm going to mention it here anyway lol. I just got a bunch of magnolia seeds in a swap. I cleaned, scarified and planted 6 of them.
They need to be sown fresh so the question is does anyone want the rest of them? There are probably 20 left in the packet.
-
duh
I can take some off your hands.......
And give you something back?
What do you think?
dodge
-
tammy, i'd like a couple. but not more than a few. i can send you stamps or something.
-
pm me your addresses and they are on the way.
Um I've got a list up over on garden web of the seeds I am looking for. But if you have an overage of something I can always put it in a swap. I'll leave that to you.
With a possible success rate of 25% I'll send you both about 10 how is that?
-
That would be fine ......10 is plenty for playing .
I will go gweb an see whats up?
dodge
-
I cant find your 2010 on gardenweb

dodge

All I know is my daddy said do not go into the barn on Christmas eve, cause the cows talk.
One man did . The cows were talking that their master was going to die.
He did .
So did every one who ate carrots..
b
-
Holy cow!!!
-
Who knows???????????? :hobbyhorse:
-
Are you going to wintersow anything? Remember you told me about making a cold frame with my windows? I've never done it.
-
I usually start my stuff outside around January here.
-
Penny how come mine wont germinate outside? Not till april here do they grow if in a jug.
Where do u put yours?
b
-
I use a good soil, and place them outside on one of the raised flower beds, and they've always done well, which amazes me, considering some of our temperatures we get up here.
I always pre soak my peat pots, if i'm using any, and make sure to drill some holes into the bottom of the milk jug, pop bottle, whatever you are using for drainage, and ventalation.
-
Dont they get blowed away?
Wind is so bad here, Hd says its impossible?
b
-
I bury them down in the snow, and they stay put.
-
Or another suggestion is to place small rocks in the bottom of the containers, and that would help too, Barb.
-
Wind is an absolute seedling killer. Where I live you cannot do seeding outdoors at certain times of year without a a greenhouse strong enough to withstand wind.
I have taken those 2 liter bottles and cut off the tops, driven a stake into the ground down through the middle of it, filled and planted and replaced the top over the stake. That kept my 'mini greenhouse' in place. But the wind still dried out the seedlings even with damp soil and all of the protection of the plastic.
It is a game to play with Mother Nature to get things to grow sometimes.
-
LOL :duel:
Ole mom nature :duel: huh
I loose that battle constantly here. YOu put them in full sun Penny ?
Or little protectin? Ithought of the grape arbor place.
b
-
The planter boxes are in full sun from around 11am on.
-
Ok..
Now to think of a spot .. How do you water them ?
dodge
-
You can water them if they need it, but usually the condensation built up inside, does the trick.
You just need to make sure that you seal up the container really good again, if you do decide to hand water, and i would only spritz them if you had too.
-
ok Thanks
Penny
-
You're welcome......good luck with it.
-
dodge, did I make it up that you've wintersowed before? Did I dream it? I thought we talked about me using my old windows for a cold frame.
-
Yes i did winter sow , didnt work. You got 2 storys mixed .
The frame was not winter sow.
it was Hot bed for growing lettuce. Done that also. It worked .
That is early spring sowing for early lettuce.
b
-
Oh. At least I didn't make it up.
-
No..........Your correct.
I dont have a green house>LOL
b
-
Well the magnolias are in the refrigerator. It's not exactly 39 degrees but it's as close as I'm likely to get lol. The lilies are outside since the days are high sixties low 70's which is still 5 degrees hotter than the best temperatures. But I always have to rush things. I have no self discipline.
-
duh
I pleeled the outside coating off the magnolias
Now we will see if I get any results.
dodge
-
Good luck, Barb.......magnolia's are such a pretty tree.
-
Yes good luck
-
Thanks girls may need more than luck..
LOL
:stars:
-
I'm adding the amaryllis to the wintersow list since I'll plant the bulbs in pots come January 31st. Then I'll transplant come late spring once the soil has warmed up.
-
Youll Love ammy Tk
LOL
b
-
They are definitely the color I love in a garden.
I just received jalapeno and sweet peppers and I'll plant those in January also but those will be kept inside in a sunny window.
-
I just received Spinach and Phlox, red drummond. I'll plant both of those this fall. The spinach in the ground and the phlox in cups.
-
I just received Spinach and Phlox, red drummond. I'll plant both of those this fall. The spinach in the ground and the phlox in cups.
Cool, good luck with them.
-
Thanks penny.
-
Perstemon 'iron maiden' is being added to the wintersow pile. And the time is sneaking up on me isn't it. I can't believe it is almost November.
-
You better believe it ......Almost turkey time.
b
-
Of course I'm running low on potting soil. I hope that the hardware store has at least one bag left or I'm not going to make it through the winter.
-
Check Walmart.....they should still have some, and it might be on sale.
-
I just bought some at Lowe's. They have plenty.
-
I'll check both places on payday. Thanks for the advice.
-
I got a bag of potting soil at walmart. And I planted one milk jug greenhouse full of the red orgami columbines and one full of the blush pink double bloom columbine. The red ones will go in the foundation bed in the front to replace the panzies. The blush pink ones are going under the deck. There is a volunteer under there all ready and I've never seen one that big or healthy anywhere else so I'm going to add to that area with the same thing. It should look really good in a couple of years.
-
Ok today I planted a small group of rose campions. They are suppose to like a chill. The only question is do they need light or dark to germinate. I couldn't find the answer so I did half and half.
-
I went researching and as they are mostly a sunshine plant that self sow, I would say light, not darkness.
Propagation: Sow seeds in place in autumn or a few weeks before the last expected frost in spring. The seeds need to be chilled before they germinate. Just press the seeds into the soil; do not bury them
-
Do you plant then right in the beds now? Or jugs?
I might have some to do it with..
dodge
-
It could be done either way, Dodge. They usually need chilling before they will grow. So the seed instructions say fall planting or early spring, before the last frosts.
And what I was reading was that they don't like transplanting very well. So starting in trays and constantly transplanting to larger containers is not a good idea. I know that I would direct sow out. I have tried to grow these and they have not done well. It is way too hot and dry here.
-
Thanks I need to check some out.
-
Well I'm thinking of planting the Japanese Anenome today. I'll let you know if I get it done. Good luck with your rose campion.
-
I did get them planted. It sounds like the Japanese Anenome are going to be a problem to germinate. They need light and 60 degree temps for the next 2 weeks and then 3 months of dark moist temps in the 30 and 40 and then two more weeks of 60 degree temps before they sprout. So I'll be watching them for quite a while. For now they are in the livingroom where I can keep an eye on them. It's ranging between 62 and 68 in there currently.
-
Well today I decided to plant a small sampling of the Peony Poppies in a container. They do not transplant well so I only did a few for the purposes of watching them closely and if they are successful there I'll have those for easy harvest. It's a plan anyway. If we get a warm spell and they sprout I can always try and bring them indoors. Although i understand they don't do well inside. I seem to be branching out into the more difficult flowers this year.
-
branching out is how we learn. good luck!
-
Oh yearn.....LOL :stars:
-
Thanks Jenn.
They look like they will be stunning flowers. I've never grown them before but I'm looking forward to it. If I have any left over do you want to try some dodge?
-
Sure whiop them on me..
Always room for more.
dodge
-
Ok if I have any left I'll send them your way.
-
Well today I planted the mello yellow blackberry lilies. I'm hoping these are as easy to grow as the orange ones. I've heard they can be a problem to germinate. So I've got my fingers crossed.
-
Well today the daylily "Black eyed Stella" went into water and the refrigerator it should be ready to plant on March 16th. We will see how it goes. By the way nothing I have planted over the fall and winter has grown any that I can see. Hopefully spring will bring some nice results.
-
Today the Stella Dora Day Lily went into it's soak. I've got my fingers crossed. I put a drop of dawn dish soap in this bag to help break the water surface tension. We'll see if it makes any difference.
-
Let us know
-
I sure will, that is if I remember to check on them from time to time. Sometimes I'm sure I'd forget my own name given half a chance.
-
Yah!! when they bloom you should post a pic. I would love to see them!
-
Right now I'm just hoping they will plump up and grow a rootlet lol. I'd definitely not counting my chickens/blooms this early.
-
Well it looks like not of the day lilies were viable. Not one rootlet. My wintersowing was a washout, not one single flower from the entire thing.
-
did you start them from seeds or what?
-
Yes I was trying to start things from seed that are suppose to be planted in the winter.
