Title: News - Registration disabled
Post by: Jim on Mar 22, 2012, 01:54:57 PM
Due to the number of attempted registrations a day from Russia, China, and other countries that have only one purpose and that is to spam, I have temporarily disabled new member registration.  If you know of someone that wants to join us, then let me know.

Once we have had registrations disabled for a while, I'll open it back up again and see what happens.

I was deleting 40 to 60 a day that got sorta caught in our spam filter, but I still had to delete them.

I have several things working to keep spam off the board.  Limits on posting of links as well as a real-time check that is run through stopforumspam.com.  That was catching the majority of them but it does that after they register.  Anyway I will open it back up soon.  Meantime if you know someone that wants to join us, be sure and let me know and I can register them manually.

As of today I have reopened registration.  If the spammers return, I will close it again.

Registration is disabled again.  I just deleted 6 pages that the stop forum spam caught.  That is completely ridiculous.

I am sorry, Jim. It is pretty ridiculous.

Would be nice if someone could come up with a way to send them into a black hole.

Yep, or just ban the IPs that are assigned to those countries.  I've already denied lots of them access through the hosting control panel but they just keep coming.

Opened registration back up to see if they have got tired of the disabled registration message.  We'll see.

Typical coming from China and Russia.

Other counties as well, even US of A.

If haven't already ban email address *@mail.ru

Actually most of the spammers we have been getting lately have had gmail addresses.  I deleted 3 pages this morning and not one of them was from mail.ru.  I think they figured that one out and just got gmail addresses.

gmail would be hard to block.

Accept having tons of spammernames @ gmail.com

I use a small mod that checks the username, IP and email address through Stop Forum Spam and it catches most of them.  Just leaves an error in the log instead of an account that needs to be deleted.  Every now and then one will get through but it is pretty obvious they are spammers so they get deleted before they have an opportunity to validate.

I have disabled registration again.  I had to remove 10 pages of spammers today and some were duplicates.  If a current member knows of someone that wants to register, you will need to let Dianna or me know.  I hate to do this but I'm tired of the new member registrations all being spammers.

I've changed a few things on the server side to see if I can slow down the traffic from some of the heavy spammer countries.  If that works, then I will open registration again in the hopes that we will get some new folks that might want to join us.  I will watch it a few days to see if the changes I made have any affect before opening it back up.

OK, not sure if it has had the affect I wanted but I have opened registration back up as of this morning.

I have currently blocked IPs from China and Russian Federation.  This seems to have helped.  So far all new registrations have been spammers that my filter has caught so registration will remain open for now.

Unfortunately I have had to close registrations again.  Why spammers from China want to register on our forum I have no idea.  If you know of someone that would like to register, please provide the following to me and I will register them:

Display name (what they want to be called by us)
Email address

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cool, Jim. I am sorry dweeps are lurking and making things difficult.

I deleted 12 spammers this morning.  Some were even using proxies because they got by the disallow on the server side.  All were from foreign countries and will not post because they are probably spammers.  Some of the email addresses looked like porn spammers because of some of the phrases in the email.  Up until this morning I was deleting 3 pages a day of attempted registrations.  This morning there was 7 pages with approximately 50 entries on each page.

So registrations will remain closed until further notice.  I would be happy to re-open it if we got a few legitimate registrations but it seems it has been ages since we have had anyone new come along.

I fully understand. I appreciate the work you do to keep this a  nice peaceful spam-free place to be. And if closing registrations save you work, I'm all for it.

Closing registrations may/might be an inconvenience to some, not allowing just anyone to register, you can at least filter the good and bad, usually spammers won't email you for an account, then again...

Yep.  I already have registrations set where they have to be verified.  I just got tired of deleting pages and pages of spammer registration attempts.

When someone tries to register now, it checks their IP, username, and email address against the Stop Forum Spam database.  If they are in that list, it denies the registration and puts an entry into my error log.  That's where I am seeing the pages and pages of attempts.  Every now and then one or two gets through and those are the ones that I set to validate the email and most times they never do.  Some do and then don't post and intro within 7 days.  When that happens they get deleted as the policy states.

It's a shame that we have to go to these lengths because of the spammers.

Opened up registrations again.  We'll see how long it takes the spammers to find us.

Have had registration opened now for a week and 2 days and so far every registration has been a spammer caught by the mod I have installed to do just that.  I've deleted 8 pages total with 50 on each page.

Thought you closed it again.. lol
Title: Re: News - Registration disabled
Post by: Jim on Jul 25, 2014, 11:00:16 AM
Nope.  As long as the mod catches them, it's an easy matter to delete the pages.  If they start slipping through then it gets a bit more frustrating.  I'll leave it open for a bit to see if maybe we finally do get some new members.

I'll close it again if we get so many guests that it slows the system down.  10 online right now and almost all are from China and Russia.

It's still open.  The mod is still doing it's job and catching the spammers.  Looks like they would get tired and just go away!
