Local Common Name is Slo Berry
« on: Jul 15, 2008, 07:24:00 AM »
I'd be very pleased if someone could tell me about these vines.  They are growing up several of my trees and currently have a mass of green berries ripening.  My neighbor told me they are edible and make good wine if you add sugar.  I'm wondering what other name they may be called by.  And if they could be made into jam or jelly.  I'd really like to go some canning this year and I don't have enough blackberry bushes to make to worth my time to do them.

The leaf is round with serated edges and the plant is suppose to be related to the grape family if that is of any help.

No the plant I have is a vine not a tree and it doesn't have thorns.  It also doesn't have hardwood.

Tammy, I think you may have Vitis labrusca there, & it might also be called "Fox grape".

If your neighbor says that wine can be made from the fruit, it seems that they certainly would be edible, so why don't you just go ahead & can them?  (Or make jam/jelly, whatever.)

:tuschel: BTW, I believe that it would be easier to look up recipies & such, if you spelled it "sloe" instead of "slo". :wink5:

Taking the hint Patty left here about spelling it sloe, I found this website:

http://www.gourmetfoodsource.net/sloe-berries.htm

Sounds like you have some neat berries there! That site even has a recipe for jelly, yum!

That's funny, when I Googled, I got both spellings so it didn't matter really which way it was spelled in the OP.   :goofy:

I think I said this once before - it's really a challenge to figure out the mystery plants without a pic.  It makes us really read the description and use more than our vision.  I actually kind of like the challenge.

Duh, don't mean to hijack your topic but what do you think of maybe taking a plant that you already know what it is and describing it?  Let the other members try and figure out what it is just from the description.  The description would have to be in your own words, nothing copied from a wiki or anything like that.

Just a thought, I have those now and again.

I googled "slo" berry and came up with Juniper. Reading it, though, told me that it had needles for leaves, so I guess it is not the plant you have.:smileyNo:

I am sure someone will be able to find it for you soon... :)
