Tomato Hornworms
« on: Aug 29, 2008, 04:55:38 PM »
I have one tomato plant(Purple Prince I think) that I have in a big pot by the back porch and I have discovered tomato hornworms on. I have some "dust"(can't remember the name right now) that will get rid of them, but have been hand picking them off and thought- "Those buggars have a nasty looking 'stinger' on their butts.... do they actually sting??"

So.... Do they sting or not?? Inquiring minds(mine anyway) want to know

Nope, they don't sting.  They do look menacing though.  They are the larval stage of the Five spotted Hawk Moth.  Hand picking is an effective means of control.

Those things look evil, Tonya. I don't care whether they sting or not, they scare me... :o
