Fishtank Help
« on: Aug 29, 2008, 07:03:12 PM »
How would one go about sealing a crack in the glass of a fishtank?

Dan accidentally put a crack in the bottom of one of our tanks today while cleaning it out.  The glass did not break out but the crack is along the length of the tank and goes from a corner to down the center of the glass bottom.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

In the bottom is a hard one, as that is the glass with the most stress on it. What size tank is this?

It is a ten gallon tank.

We were not sure it could be saved but the alternate plan is that I could use it in the bathroom as a seed starter place if we cannot fix it without the risk of it leaking.

It may be possible to seal over the crack, and buy yourself some time to replace the tank, but I was asking about the size because a new ten gallon tank is ten bucks at wally world, and the sealant to use on the crack would be 4 or 5 bucks...so you wouldn't really be saving yourself much.

That being the case, I think I will stick with it as a seed starter area and get a new tank when we can afford one.  Thanks for the help!

No problem at all. Had it been a bigger tank, I would say replace the bottom piece. In your case, however, that just doesn't make sense, either.

Sorry to read that you are losing a fish tank, but happy to hear that it will be recycled in some way. Instead of a snake or another horrid little pet, what about a hamster? My kids had lots of those while growing up... :grinnnn:

I could handle a hamster or gerbil or even a white rat easily.  Had those growing up as well.  Dan wants to get the kids one of those crazy cool cages for a rodent one of these days.
