Wild Yellow Plum
« on: Nov 20, 2008, 09:35:04 AM »
Woohoo I got these planted today.  I'm so excited.  My first fruit tree/bush.  They need to cross polinate from what I read so if anyone has any wild plums on their property I'd love some cuttings or seeds if you have any.  I'll happily pay the postage.  Thanks all.

Since the plum likes full sun I'm going to plant them around the electrical pole that is right in the center of my front yard by the street.  One on each side should draw the attention away from the pole in a couple of years.  So that will be very cool.

You might want to re-think the wild plums Tammy as I wouldn't let Dianna bring any home from Tennessee.  Of course she didn't want to after Dad told her that if she brought one home today she would have 100 next year.  I don't want wild plums all over the place myself.

I read that they create suckers.  Really aggressive are they?  I'll have to think about creating a barrier around the planting area then.  I have to do that for the blackberries too.

Thanks for the heads up.  I really want the fruit so I'm willing to do some creative corraling.

It will be easier to create the barrier before the plant goes in the ground.  I'm behind the 8 ball with the blackberries.  They got here first lol.

I wonder if it would help to lay newspaper/cardboard down and then mulch on top of it? Whatever you try, please let me know if you have good luck with it. Dad Moore had lots of little ones I could dig up to bring here... :Whis:

I love those little green plums dipped into salt before I bite into them. Makes my mouth pucker up, but I sure do love them... :giggle:

I'm just plum crazy about plums. I had some planted in the back field, but the deer ate all the bark off and killed them.
This is me ->?

I'll let you know how it goes.  But I will tell you that cardboard, newspaper and mulch won't do the trick.  It will help them be nice and healthy so they can really get to spreading though.

My plan is concrete pipes.  Some of them are very wide so if I can get some that are long enough I can upend them where I want the trees and then fill them with dirt and that will be my wild plum orchard lol. Then all I have to do is make sure to not let any of the fruit rot in place and I've got it made.
