I did some Googling and this thing is invasive. It's not on the bad list maintained by Clemson University but it is on the watch list. I guess that is why there are so many of them down at the farm in Tennessee. They must be trying to compete with the red cedar.
Anyway I will mark this one as solved. Looks like Dad was right! Again!
