I'm not sure what I do but we see them in the yard all the time and so far they haven't bothered the garden.

Penny, I put tomatoes in pots this past year and had good results, especially with the cherry tomatoes.

What kind of peas?  green peas?  on string?

This year I plan to do everything I did last year, plus more fruit, and a few new-to-me veggies like yardlong beans. Gardening with chickens continues to be a challenge, but I figured out last year that they want nothing to do with any vining squash, and they will leave pepper plants alone UNTIL the first light frost, then they strip the leaves. The frost must change the taste.

So, with being able to put those two crops outside the fenced garden area, it will open up a considerable amount of space inside for me to work with.  :dancingbunny:

Sarah, you maaaaaay not be able to do EVERYTHING you did last year.  You maaaaaay have a little man hanging onto your leg slowing you down a bit.

Fortunately for me, Mike is home two out of every three days, and my closest girl friend LOVES to garden, but doesn't have land. One way or another, it'll get done.  :grinnnn:

I always put my girls in the stroller or walker and took them outside with me.  Babies will go wherever you are.

Yes, Jonni spent happy hours being pushed in her stroller every morning while I pulled weeds. Even when it was raining. I had a rain shield thingy. Although usually fewer weeds came out on rainy days. We were both pretty happy.

I actually use a wrought iron trellis for them to climb on and they seem to do well.

Looks pretty too I'll bet.  Maybe I'll give peas a whirl this year.

I want to grow some more, so i can freeze more, but they seem to disappear off the vine before i can get them into the house.

deer?  birds? neighbors?

One of the men here yesterday giving me an estimate said that deer ate every single one of his tomato plants this year.  Pulled the entire plant right out of the ground.  He could see the hoof prints in the garden.  I hope I can keep doing whatever it is (which I don't know) that is keeping the animals out of my garden.  I've never had a problem even though we see deer in our field all the time.

There is nothing much better than peas straight off the vine, no cooking, no chilling. It is Mother Nature's candy. My kids, even the ones who won't touch peas on a plate, loved them.

Now I've got to grow them.  I'll just have to come up with something for them to climb.

There are "bush" peas out there...they don't get taller than 30", and don't HAVE to have something to climb, they just sorta make a pile of themselves.

I start my peas right in the ground as soon as it isnt frozen solid. They like cooler weather and can take a light frost. Oregon bush (I think( is the bush variety I grew. Used sticks and string to make a trellis.
