balcony gardens
« on: Jan 26, 2009, 09:29:31 PM »
As many would have realised (hopefully) by now, I live in a 7th floor shoe-box in an 8 storey filing cabinet in the middle of one of the kargest cities on Earth (Tokyo).   As such, it is also a heavily polluted city - primarily soot, sulphate and nitrate pollution (partly the basis of my Masters in Environmental Physics).

But, a balcony is pretty much a standard feature, and my shoebox is no different.

I have about 4 potted plants - now these have to be hardy as I am often too busy with work and study.  Also, asides from the pollution, Tokyo's climate varies between tropical (warm and humid) in summer and cold temperate (cold, wet and sometimes snow) in winter... so the plants have to be hardy...

Can anyone guess what the variety of flowering plant that I have is?

I am wondering if the plants are roses or azaleas? :dunno:

How about marigolds or pansies.

nope on all accounts - think of a very hardy and persistent flowering plant.

not completely - they will launch an invasion of other potted plants if not supervised

That would not bother me too much.  If it grows, it stays is my motto.  Well other than the weeds and I have been known to keep a few of those as well.

I love geraniums, but they must not love me. They never last through the winter.
This is me ->?
