ODD MUSHROOM
« on: Aug 04, 2009, 10:33:45 PM »
I found a something growing outside my office today.  I knew it had to be a mushroom of some sort, but I had never before seen anything like this. Researched for about an hour before finally figuring out what it was. Its growing up from a bound up mess of a fern's root system.

Stinkhorn Mushroom

What a weird looking mushroom! :o It looks like someone's ear sticking up out of the ground to me.... :laugh1:

I agree it does look like a red ear.  How weird is that?  Does it smell?

Yuk! I read the description obviously not edible, these don't grow in England although we do have our share of the odd smelly

It didn't last long. They are short lived evidently. It was keeled over and dead by the end of the day. It was the only one. I keep watching for others to pop up, but haven't seen any yet.

You'd think. Especially since they basically plowed it under the next day. I keep watching but nothing yet. We have had a bunch of every day toadstools come up since we've been getting so much rain. But no more of these.

I've never seen one.  Glad you got a picture.  Unusual to say the least.
