calathea or maranta?
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 09:57:47 PM »
I was given this plant and told it was a prayer plant.  I've always thought prayer plants were marantas.  But I'd swear this is a calathea.  so what do you think?

I don't know the answer, but whichever it is, it is certainly healthy and happy. Beautiful plant!
Dear Lord, On this day, please wrap your arm around my shoulder and keep your hand over my mouth.  Amen

so i learned something today.  calatheas are also called prayer plants because their leaves will stand straight up "closing the plant" at night.  they don't fold like a maranta, but they do remind one of praying hands the way they stand up in the dark.   so, now i know.  and i have shared.

and, it further illustrates why we should know the proper names as well as the common names.  i would have never known if i hadn't worked late tonight!
