I figured I would just let the horse poo lay on top of the ground until it is quite dry and crusty and then run the tiller over it to mix it in.  At least that is all it would take in the garden unless I decide to move it.

Once I get the turning plow for the tractor then it won't be so hard on the tiller.

The problem with tilling to kill weeds is that most weed seeds are viable for many, many years...each time you turn the soil over, you are exposing more old seeds.

Mulch it is.

Well this beats all. You are always telling me, "Don't hand me no stuff" then you go begging the neighbor to give it to ya.
This is me ->?

We met the horse owners tonight and they will be bringing over the first load tomorrow.  We were talking about how horses put out about 50lbs a day so he figured he will be bringing about 2000lbs over tomorrow.  That's a lot of horse manure.  :applause:

It's actually been 14 days since they cleaned it up so that's 2100lbs of s***.

That's over a ton!  :o

I liked the way Sheri censored the s*** because if you type it out the board censors it to poo.  I might change it to s*** now.  All of this conversation about s***!

A lot of horse s*** (couldn't resist).

Seriously, we let our neighbor bring her horses over to graze every summer, they do a good job thinning about 4 acres out, lots of poo, usually stays where it falls.

I'm probably going to have to mow again this year, but my neighbor won't.  The back field where the horses are is really short now.  Her daughter mowed her front yard today but my whole place needs it, especially the back field.

I mentioned this when we met the horse owners today and he said "we can just cut a gate in the fence and the horses will mow it for you".  I said something about having to build a fence on 2 sides and the conversation moved to other topics.

When the HO (horses' owner) brought the poo over on Sunday, I had to redirect them after the first load. Our veggie garden is covered in piles of poo, so we asked them to dump the next loads on the corn patch... :grinnnn:

Sarah, I haven't found that article about tilling and tilling and tilling some more yet, but am still looking. I do want to ask you about sheet composting in that large of an area, though. Would that work? I was thinking that Jim could till in what we have then I could spread cardboard on it. After the corn field is covered, I could have them start putting the poo back in the veggie garden and continue to do that way until the gardens are at least a foot thick. Am I on the right track with my thinking? :ScratchHead:

That sounds like a good idea. I would also pile on any grass clippings and/or leaves you can find. Where is the debris from the corn? That would be a good addition...

Jim, you might ask if the horses are hot wire or tape trained...if they are either, the horse owners could potentially set up a quick fence thet the horses would respect.

If they are NOT, don't offer to let them learn at your house...you don't need to be chasing loose horses. However, properly trained horses will not cross a wire or tape, no matter if it's on or not.

All the debris from the corn is long gone, Sarah. Jim bush hogged the patch down and then started mowing over it. Jim mowed the front yard today, so maybe there might be some grass clippings to use. Our trees are very small so no help with leaves there... :(

All I think I have in the way of "brown" is cardboard. The poop is considered "green", right?

The horses do have a hot wire around Virginia's fence, but I don't think we will let them bring the horses over here. We wouldn't feel comfortable about them penned in with just a wire...::)

The poo is somewhere between a green and a brown, so it alone will be fine, but cardboard with it will be good too. Are you covering the whole garden spot, or do you have assigned beds that you are mounding?

I was thinking the whole garden could benefit from it, Sarah. We rotate the crops from year to year, so want to make sure whatever goes in what spot has good soil... :grinnnn:

Barb, thanks, but that is a little far to travel to work for leaves... hysteria

If it were me, I'd till in what is there, then lay out beds for next year and mound it 2 or 3 feet deep in those spots. Then when spring rolls around it should be pretty well broken down, and you should be able to just palnt in it and then mulch over it with straw to control weeds.

I plan on spreading it out by hand and then putting the tiller on the tractor and mixing it up some.  I haven't got my turning plow yet so will have to make do with the tiller.  We should have enough in the garden to cover it lightly now.

Don't fear the poo.

Seriously, take all that you can get. Don't worry about tilling it all in. The worms will have a party, and do a dandy job of mixing it for you. Let nature do the work...help it along in the spring IF needed. Horse poo is only about 2% nitrogen, so it's darn near impossible to overdo it.

It showered a bit today. I wonder if the seeds have sprouted in the piles? I think I will walk out there tomorrow and check it out. I hope I remember to take my camera with me. I wanna show you all how much poop that we have already gotten... :goofy:

Funny to be taking pics of poop. But it is exciting stuff for gardeners so go for it.
