That is very cool.  One of these days when we have space, I would love to raise hens for eggs.

A couple more, then I'll quit for now.

I just love your chickens, Sarah!! Do they lay in nesting boxes or do they just lay wherever? I have one hen who sometimes lays in the boxes and sometimes lays in the pine straw nest she made under the trees out back. I think we have at least 5 of ours laying now

That's great, Tonya!  :dancingbunny:

My girls gennerally share a nest somewhere on the property. I have found that as long as I leave one or two eggs in the nest each time I gather eggs, they will continue to use that nest.

For the most part, I let them choose where they want to nest. They tend to pick some pretty good spots! :grinnnn:

Now, the ducks on the other hand, are fussy...they abandon their nest if you are caught touching it, AND they cover their nest with feathers and dry leaves. :thpullhairout: It can be a challenge to find the new nest.

Boy, Sarah, your chickens are beautiful.   :Wow:  I am so jealous of both of you being able to have chickens and getting some fresh eggs.  :Whis:  Geesh, with the price of eggs being what they are today,  :yikes:  I feel like I need to raise start raising chickens.  My friend has chickens, so I get the brown eggs from her sometimes and they are so rich and  good.  :yesssss:  Quite often they will have double yolks and that's a bonus!  ;)

Sat outside today with the camera, and got some good pictures of the girls.

This is Miss Fit, the crossed beak:

And her good side:

Please excuse the water, the ducks were there first. :giggle:

This is Daphne:

Miss Fit is so special, Sarah! Does she have a problem with picking something off of the ground to eat?

Daphne looks like she is strutting her stuff down a modeling runway.... :grinnnn:

She has some trouble, but having tryed so hard her whole life to do what she sees the other chickens do, she can do it, just not as well as they do.

She does best with soft foods, like pasta, and left-over oatmeal. I also have extra deep bowls for her to eat out of, and that seems to do the trick for her.

Doesn't she just, Tonya?  :laughmao: That is Zettie, she is one of my older chickens, so she knows the "rules", but also seems to know that the crazy lady just yells, never actually causes harm. :naughty:

Your chickens are too cute. I wouldn't mind a few if they didn't have feathers. I don't like feathers.

Sarah, I was wondering if you had any Bantam chickens?   :dunno:   When I was at my friend's house the other day, I was in the barn holding some of her Bantys and they are adorable.    One of them took a liking to me and was following me around like a little duckling and it was so cute!!!  ;)

Patti, I do not. I like them, but I feel if I were to try to have smaller chickens here, like banties, the big girls would just push them around.

I love the pattern on this girl:

Wow, that really is a beautiful and unique pattern, Sarah!   :Wow:  What's her name?   :SmileyQmarks:

My friend not only has the Bantams, she has guineas, ducks, geese, her laying chickens and a couple of turkeys and they all seem to get along like one happy family.  ;)

Here's everyone on weed patrol:

They do a great job of eating the weeds I toss on the yard.

And, Happy Easter from the girls!

Hey, Sarah, I think you should try to convince the girls that they can get a lot fresher weeds if they would just pick them straight from the ground.    I love the colors they used to decorate the Easter eggs.  ;)

Oh, believe me, they know. There are very few weeds where they free range. I have to pull weeds in the front yard, the church next door, and have even resorted to pulling weeds in the park down the street for them to munch. :giggle:

That is cool... looks like at least 3 different birds laid eggs there, assuming that each one lays a different colored egg.   I see this and I want chickens soooo bad.  You need more of this type of nest!

I got 6 different eggs out of that nest today...I wasn't kidding about the line. :giggle:

It's not a nest box, really...they made it one. It was originally a cat box cover, then I put it outside with a bed in it for the back yard cat to sleep in when it's raining...then they made a nest out of it, so I figured why fight it.

Well, with 10 chickens and two ducks laying, I am getting 8 to 9 eggs a day, plus 2 duck eggs every day (if I can FIND the darn things!!! :thpullhairout:)

I'm getting really good at making angel food cake. :laughmao: Going to try chiffon cakes next...
